Gminski: Henderson a big loss for Duke

Raycom Sports TV analyst Mike Gminski weighed in Wednesday on what losing wing Gerald Henderson to the NBA means to Duke.

The school announced Tuesday that Henderson will forgo his senior season after signing with agent Arn Tellem.

"It's a big hit for them because I thought (Henderson) was such a catalyst and a confidence instiller on offense," Gminski said. "Obviously he could get to the rim and his jumper was much better last year. I just think they looked to him for a lot of their confidence. . . .I think it's going to put a lot of onus on (Jon) Scheyer to step up from a leadership standpoint, and I think he's capable of that."

With Greg Paulus gone, too, Duke is left with just three players - Scheyer, Nolan Smith and Elliot Williams - in the backcourt. That might require Kyle Singler to play some small forward after playing power forward and even center in his first two seasons.

"I think Kyle is capable of doing that," Gminski said. "It might be a matchup problem for another (small forward), and I think he's got the ability to defend out on the perimeter. So that would give them some flexibility. . . .They lose two really good perimeter shooters (Henderson and Greg Paulus) and certainly that's not Nolan Smith's forte and we haven't seen that from Elliot Williams. So that's going to be a little bit different."

How will Duke ever get to

How will Duke ever get to the NCAA second round without Henderson? Need guards? Look at the kentucky Wildcats, they have plenty...even getting them out of north Carolina these days. I wouldn't count on Duke getting Brandon Knight next year either. He will probably also go to Kentucky.

Poor Duke

"Big hit for them"

B.G.O. (blinding glimpse of the obvious!)

G-man, tell me it is not so!  Losing Henderson is a "big hit" for the Dukies.  Now, there is some astute analysis.  That Duke scholarship has paid off.

Thanks a lot Henderson.

Thanks a lot Henderson. Duke should not have recruited you if you were going to leave early.
The ones metioned in the other posts will not provide any help to the 2009-2010 team. They need a post player and a point guard.

Bwelp!

And, by your logic, UNC shouldn't have recruited James Worthy, Michael Jordan, Brandan Wright, Wayne Ellington, Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Ty Lawson and others.

Thinking more than a handful of truly outstanding college players are going to stay, or should stay, for four years is patently absurd.

Need for Guards

With Henderson gone, the coaches need to think back to when they asked Reggie Love to come back as a post grad, except this time it would be Marty Pocius. He has a decent handle, can hit the three, can pass and has learned to defend. If only Marty would consider coming back.

Well, OK . . .

but IMO Martynas Pocius is not an ACC caliber basketball player. Although it is, perhaps, possible for Pocius to get a redshirt season for 2007/08 when he only played in four games I seriously doubt Pocius is going to be able to contribute much to Duke next year. Love is a different thing entirely, taller, stronger, more athletic and - yes - even a better basketball player than Pocius. That being said I'm sure Krzyzewski will make the right call - if Pocius even wants to come back for another season. I certainly don't know whether he's ready to move on or not.
