CHAPEL HILL — Senior wing Marcus Ginyard will miss the rest of the season with an injured left foot, UNC announced after its 108-91 win over Maryland on Tuesday night.
The school also announced sophomore forward Will Graves has been suspended for the remainder of the season for an unspecified reason.
Ginyard, who has missed 19 games this season, will seek a medical redshirt to return for the 2009-2010 season. The team's defensive stopper and vocal leader, Ginyard played in only three games after undergoing surgery on his left foot for a stress fracture.
"It was a decision that was very tough for me," Ginyard said. "It's just not healing as quickly as we would like it to."
Ginyard had surgery on Oct. 8 and was expected to miss eight to 10 weeks. He returned later than expected, on Dec. 28, for a home game with Rutgers. He played in the following two games — at Nevada and at home against Boston College on Jan. 4.
UNC coach Roy Williams had wanted to see if Ginyard could return to help the team this season — he started every game as a junior for the Heels' Final Four team in 2007-08 — but if Ginyard did, he would lose the ability to redshirt.
"You get to a certain point where it's not what is best for the young man," Williams said. "I wanted him to come back and play but it wasn't 100 percent.
"This is the biggest factor — he still has pain."
Ginyard said he didn't even think about using a redshirt until
Christmas when he had a conversation with his father. The pursuit of a national championship with his classmates — Tyler Hansbrough, Danny Green and Bobby Frasor — was the driving factor in trying to return this season, even if only to help in the postseason in March. But Ginyard said he just hasn't healed from the surgery.
"I wouldn't be at 100 percent," Ginyard said. "To be out there and not be 100 percent, I feel like I would be cheating my teammates."
Graves did not play against N.C. State on Saturday and watched again — in uniform on Tuesday — as Williams emptied his bench.
"Unfortunately, Will did not maintain the standards we expect of a Carolina basketball player," Williams said in a statement, without giving a specific reason for the suspension.
Williams said he expects Graves back for the 2009-2010 season.
