GREENSBORO - Georgia Tech rallied in the second half to defeat Wake Forest 52-45 in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum.
The fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets advanced to the semifinals on Saturday where they await the winner of top-seeded Duke and ninth-seeded Maryland.
The fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets (23-8) opened Friday's game against Wake Forest without a field until the eight-minute mark of the first half, falling behind 16-6 until Alex Montgomery hit a 3-pointer to end the drought. From there, the Yellow Jackets inched back into the game over the final 28 minutes, securing victory after trailing for much of the game.
Georgia Tech's Brigitte Ardossi, the game's leading scorer with 23 points, score inside to put her team ahead 45-43 with a minute remaining. The Yellow Jackets held on for the rest of the way, knocking down five free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Trailing 48-45 with 16.5 seconds to play, Wake ran a perimeter play for Camille Collier, who was blocked by Montgomery. With her team getting the ball back, Wake junior Brittany Waters stepped out of bounds and turned the ball over the Yellow Jackets.
Secily Ray scored a team-high 11 points, while Brooke Thomas added 10.
The Yellow Jackets made the Deacs uncomfortable with a full-court press the entire second half, forcing them to make dangerous passes and take hurried shots.
"We just kind of lost our poise," Waters said.
