Following up on UNC's exits

Bookmark and Share

Two lists on the 26 exits from the UNC program since the end of the 2006 season.

First, a Triangle comparison:

   Medical Transfer/left Graduate NFL
Total
Duke 8 12 8 0 28
UNC 8 11 6 1 26
State 1 17 1 1 20

Notes: Medical hardship means a player was injured and no longer can physically play. They are still on scholarship but do not count towards the NCAA limit (85); Transfer/left includes players who were dismissed from the team or left the program on their own volition. Graduate is players that graduated after four years and could have played a fifth season but chose not to. NFL is players who left for the NFL after three years.

And second, the break down of UNC's list:

Medical hardship
1. LB Logan Buchanan
2. S Bryan Dixon
3. FB Nick Starcevic
4. LB Garrett White
5. T Zack Handerson
6. G Mike Dykes
7. G Morgan Randall
8. DT Darrius Massenburg

Dismissed
9. S Jermaine Strong
10. LB Wesley Flagg
11. G Charleston Gray
12. T Andre Barbour
13. RB Barrington Edwards
14. WR Anthony Parker-Boyd
15. CB Tavorris Jolly
16. DE Darius Powell
17. LB Kenneth Harris

Graduation (four years)
18. QB Cam Sexton (transferred to Catawba)
19. RB Richie Rich (North Alabama)
20. WR Kenton Thornton (North Alabama)
21. TE B.J. Phillips (The Citadel)
22. G Aaron Stahl
23. LB Joey Bozich

Transferred
24. K Jay Wooten (South Carolina)

NFL
25. WR Hakeem Nicks

Left the team
26. G Kevin Bryant

Notes: None of the eight players on medical hardship are still playing college football.

Secondly, Butch Davis graciously took 30 minutes earlier this summer for a one-on-one interview to talk about the nature of the departures. As he said in the print edition: "There was nothing that was clandestine or deceitful."

The same can be said of the story. UNC had an unusual offseason, this was an attempt to explain those departures. That's it. Any accusatory comments to the contrary are misguided and will not see the light of day.

What smells here for me is

What smells here for me is that (1) Carolina, not State, was the subject of the article, despite the similarity of statistics, and (2) there was an obvious attempt to find somebody at Carolina, not State, who would state a discouraging word.

ultimately

this blog looks bad for ncsu.

you cant help the medical hardships and graduation is what the guys are supposed to be here for in the first place even though I am a football fan first.

it just goes to show where most of the lunatic fringe come from ... ncsu fans.

UNC fans certainly didnt make enough stink to get all these blogs written about ncsu trasfers/left the team and they have A 1/3 MORE than UNC does overe the same time frame.

no excuses as UNC fans can cite the same ones. facts are facts.

notice there aren't many posts on this particular blog b/c the writing is clearly "on the wall."

This follow-up

Is there any reason this detail was not included in the intial (print?) article?

Obviously, it paints a rather different picture.

We look forward to quotes from the 17 former NCSU players that transferred or had their scholarship yanked.

So I guess O'Brien tells them to hit the road when they get hurt

First, a Triangle comparison:

Medical Transfer/left Graduate NFL Total

Duke 8 12 8 0 28

UNC 8 11 6 1 26

State 1 17 1 1 20

Let's see. If we add Medical to Dismissed, transferred, and left, we get:

Duke: 20

UNC: 19

State:18

That's assuming there's no penalty for graduating, which is really the goal of a college athlete. I realize JPGiglio holds the graduation rate in low esteem as they don't do a lot of that at the schools that he votes for in the polls, but I think most people would assume a kid who graduates is free to move on and start his life.

What did Texas's numbers look like after Mack Brown took over, Giglio? Are they similar?

JPG

Those numbers look pretty even to me. Do you ever say anything good about UNC, or is there some kind of grudge?

How does

asking questions constitute a grudge?

As the story shows, Davis isn't running people out of town. That would qualify as a "good" thing, I think.

And I write "good" things about UNC when they do "good" things, and vice versa.

Finally, just because someone is not pro-UNC, doesn't make them anti-UNC.

from a wolfpack site posted by a wolfpack fan:

"JP is a Wolfpack fan through and through. Without giving too much info away, I worked with JP a little at The Technician in the mid '90's and the guy BLEEDS State red. In fact, there was a particular instance where we were coving a State game and we were in the old press box at Carter-Finley. This was one of the many games during the O'Cain years where we came close but didn't win (how familiar does that sound!). Anyway, JP had to leave and go to the sideline because he could not maintain his 'impartiality' that reporters are supposed to have in press box (plus the reporters from the opposing team were right next to us). You may not like JP...or you may not like what he has to say, but the guy is definitely a Wolfpacker. "

False

I don't know who posted this at Pack Pride but it's simply not true.

When I worked at Technician, and covered Duke earlier this decade, I watched most of the games I covered from the sidelines because you get a better feel for the game. Plus, at Technician, our deadline was Sunday night (not right after the game).

The rest is pure fiction.

i stand corrected

you guys do erase posts even though there was no cussing or racial slurs ... cause my post is gone.

Re: How does

I don't see how you can question it in a positive way.  It would be like me questioning why so many assistants left Amato's staff.

Other reasons why I sense some anti-UNC:

You stated recently that Tyler Hansbrough was not a leader.

You ranked NC State ahead of UNC (could be understandable) because of one game (not understandable).

Dook could lose all five starters and you would still predict the #1 in ACC basketball, simply because of "motivation."

But that's beside the point.  Let's watch the Heels speak for themselves and enjoy the season.  Best of luck to the Pack (except on November 28).

17

I think what we need to look at is the 17 players who have left r transferred from ncsu. Heck, UNC only had 11, one less than DUIke.

This was the biggest rip against UNC from all who read this blog and they (UNC) has less than both DUIke and ncsu.

anybody care to spin this??

My spin.

Club Chuck was closed and at least some of those guys didn't like the new sheriff that came to town and brought some order to the frontier.

The seventeen probably includes both Justin Burke and Harrison Beck, who left when they got beat out by Wilson. Mike Greco could also be in that group, although I am not sure when he left. If so, that would be two QB's who left so they could play elsewhere and Beck who got tired of specializing in one play series.

Why all the fuss about UNC?

All in all it looks pretty equitable to me.
