ACC Now

First look at the ACC in 2009-10

Underclassmen have until June 15 to make a decision about the NBA draft. We'll have our popular "Summer Hoops Preview" on ACC Now in July.

To satiate your hoops appetite (since only UNC and Duke are still alive) until then, a look at the possible lineups (and impossibly early predicted order of finish) for all 12 ACC teams in 2009-10.

Logic is applied to potential early entry candidates (Note: "logic" as in my best guess).

Going: Ty Lawson, UNC; Gerald Henderson, Duke; Greivis Vasquez, Maryland; Jeff Teague, Wake Forest; James Johnson, Wake Forest; Al-Farouq Aminu, Wake Forest.

Staying: Wayne Ellington, UNC; Ed Davis, UNC; Solomon Alabi, FSU; Trevor Booker, Clemson; Kyle Singler, Duke; Gani Lawal, Georgia Tech; Iman Shumpert, Georgia Tech.

In alphabetical projected order of finish (subject to change):

1. Duke

1. Jon Scheyer, 6-5, sr.
2. Elliot Williams, 6-4, so.
3. Kyle Singler, 6-8, so.
4. Lance Thomas, 6-8, sr.
5. Ryan Kelly, 6-10, fr.

Pre-summer thought:
The Devils would be the heavy ACC favorite and a Final Four team if Gerald Henderson decides to come back. They could still win the regular-season or repeat as champions without him because the core of players will have experience playing together (as opposed to all of UNC's new parts).

Mason Plumlee (6-11, fr.) and Brian Zoubek (7-0, sr.) give Duke frontcourt depth for the first time since Cherokee Parks was a sub.

Singler would really shine in his natural position. He would be my pick for ACC Player of the Year, especially in Henderson's spot in the offense.

2. UNC

1. Larry Drew II, 6-1, so.
2. Wayne Ellington, 6-4, sr.
3. Marcus Ginyard, 6-5, sr.
4. Deon Thompson, 6-8, sr.
5. Ed Davis, 6-10, so.

Pre-summer thought:
Sub Dexter Strickland (6-3, fr.) for Ellington if he goes pro. Sub John Henson (6-10, fr.) for Davis if he exits. That's a McDonald's All-American for a McDonald's All-American in both spots. How many programs can pull that off?

Ginyard slides nicely into the "David Noel '06" role. Whatever configuration it ends up being, the Heels should finish no worse than third and could easily win it.

3. Clemson

1. Demontez Stitt, 6-2, jr.
2. Terrence Oglesby, 6-2, jr.
3. Tanner Smith, 6-5, so.
4. Trevor Booker, 6-7, jr.
5. Jerai Grant, 6-8, jr.

Pre-summer thought:
The Tigers will be strong up front,  with Booker's brother, Devin (6-7, fr.) and McDonald's All-American Milton Jennings (6-9, fr.) joining the mix. With just a little improvement from Stitt, the Tigers should be safely in the mix for a third straight NCAA appearance.

4. Boston College

1. Reggie Jackson, 6-3, so.
2. Rakim Sanders, 6-5, jr.
3. Corey Raji, 6-6, jr.
4. Joe Trapani, 6-8, jr.
5. Josh Southern, 6-10, jr.

Pre-summer thought: Four starters back with Jackson plugging into Tyrese Rice's spot at the point. Obviously, the Eagles will miss Rice but there's no reason to think a return to the NCAA Tournament is out of the question.

Al Skinner, with a veteran lineup, gets the nod over a more talented GT team but less capable coach.

5. Georgia Tech

1. Moe Miller, 6-2, jr.
2. Iman Shumpert, 6-5, so.
3. D'Andre Bell, 6-6, sr.
4. Gani Lawal, 6-9, so.
5. Derrick Favors, 6-9, fr.

Pre-summer thought: It's do-or-die time for coach Paul Hewitt, who somehow managed to go 2-14 in '09.

He's got a talented lineup — assuming Lawal and/or Shumpert return — to make some hay. Zach Peacock (6-8, sr.) and Kammeon Holsey (6-8, fr.) give the Jackets options up front and Mfon Udofia (6-1, fr.) could push Miller at the point.

Gary Williams would win the ACC title with a combination of Shumpert, Lawal and Favors.

6. Florida State

1. Derwin Kitchen, 6-4, jr.
2. Michael Snaer, 6-4, fr.
3. Chris Singleton, 6-9, so.
4. Xavier Gibson, 6-11, so.
5. Solomon Alabi, 7-1, so.

Pre-summer thought: Snaer, a McDonald's All-American, has some big shoes to fill, taking Toney Douglas' spot in the lineup, but Kitchen slides to the point and is ready for a breakout season.

With Alabi, the Noles would push for a top-four spot. If Alabi leaves, they're more likely to fall back to the 6-10, 7-9 or 8-8 range after winning 10 games in '09.

7. Maryland

1. Eric Hayes, 6-4, sr.
2. Adrian Bowie, 6-2, jr.
3. Landon Milbourne, 6-7, sr.
4. Dino Gregory, 6-7, jr.
5. Jordan Williams, 6-8, fr.

Pre-summer thought: This team will look dramatically different if Greivis Vasquez returns (he said he will go through the NBA evaluation process) and Gary Williams lands Brooklyn phenom Lance Stephenson (6-5, scoring wing).

Without those two, Gary keeps his work boots on and tries to pull another seven or eight ACC wins out of a hat. Williams' coaching ability puts them here over the other options.

8. Virginia Tech

1. Hank Thorns, 5-9, jr.
2. Malcolm Delaney, 6-3, jr.
3. J.T. Thompson, 6-6, jr.
4. Victor Davila, 6-8, so.
5. Jeff Allen, 6-7, jr.

Pre-summer thought: Deron Washington was missed more than expected this season. Anyone can see that A.D. Vassallo will be missed from next season's lineup. Delaney and Allen are good enough to win at least seven games, though.

If Seth Greenberg would learn how to coach in November, this team could contend for an NCAA spot.

9. N.C. State

1. Javi Gonzalez, 5-11, jr.
2. Lorenzo Brown, 6-4, fr.
3. C.J. Williams, 6-5, so.
4. Richard Howell, 6-7, fr.
5. Tracy Smith, 6-8, jr.

Pre-summer thought: Year 4 for Sidney Lowe and, for better or worse, it's his roster, no more holdovers. Brown and Howell better be his Johnny Dawkins and Mark Alarie (the recruiting class that saved Coach K) or the forecast doesn't look promising for a Year 5.

Julius Mays (6-2, so.) could start for Gonzo and Dennis Horner (6-8, sr.) could start for Williams.

Overall, a team that will be reliant on Smith's post scoring (like it was with J.J. Hickson in '08) and the shooters that develop around him.

10. Virginia

1. Calvin Baker, 6-2, sr.
2. Jeff Jones, 6-4, jr.
3. Sylven Landesberg, 6-6, so.
4. Mike Scott, 6-8, jr.
5. Assane Sene, 7-0, so.

Pre-summer thought: With the right coach (Jeff Capel, Rick Barnes or Tubby Smith) this group could overachieve. Heck, with a computer regulating the starting lineup, the Hoos could win eight games just by the fact that they would know their respective roles.

Landesberg and Scott are a good foundation. They need more help, though, and definitely more direction than offered by former coach Dave Leitao.

11. Wake Forest

1. Ish Smith, 6-0, sr.
2. L.D. Williams, 6-4, sr.
3. Ari Stewart, 6-7, fr.
4. Tony Woods, 6-11, so.
5. Chas McFarland, 7-0, sr.

Pre-summer thought: If all or any of the combination of Jeff Teague, James Johnson and Al-Farouq Aminu return, it's a different story but the Deacs are likely in for a big change in 2010.

The above lineup would be an improvement defensively but there's not enough offense — or structure on offense — to repeat a second-place finish or get back to the NCAA Tournament.

12. Miami

1. Malcolm Grant, 6-1, so.
2. James Dews, 6-4, sr.
3. DeQuan Jones, 6-6, so.
4. Cyrus McGowan, 6-9, sr.
5. Dwayne Collins, 6-8, sr.

Pre-summer thought: Of all the lineups, this is the biggest toss-up. You never know with coach Frank Haith. Jones was supposed to be a stud but never got into the rotation in '09.

Grant, a transfer from Villanova, and freshman Antoine Allen are the only options at point, although maybe Haith will try Dews and Durand Scott (6-4, fr.) together. Who knows?

One thing is for sure, FSU is better equipped to handle Douglas' departure than Miami is Jack McClinton's.

stay and play or don't come...

As a fan I say give the scholarships to four year players. If you don't want the education (ha, ha) go straight to the NBA (if you can). The MCDonald ALL Americans usually play a couple of years and then bolt. How can a coach or school say it is all about their education with a straight face? Sure, the "experience" of playing in college is beneficial, from a financial standpoint mostly. And the ACC has some high profile programs.....wow, look at me dunk on Carolina! An NBA development league should not be on a college campus.

Just curious

Does anybody really see Ellington or Davis staying around for another year if UNC wins it all?

You must forget...

Javi Gonzales had flashes of greatness late in the season as he learned to drive and dish. Tracy Smith is a force inside. Horner can drain the 3's. Our problem is not the players ability--we were up big (15-20 pts) on every top team in the league. We easily should have won 4 more games in league play, but we still had guys (don't take this personally, McCauley and Costner) that had the old Sendek mindset of slow, methodical offensive sets based on backdoor cuts and long threes. With Mays, Williams, Brown, and Smith we have a team much more willing to go at teams the whole game.

On your comment

Your problem is the same problem you always have, yall suck.  Doesnt matter what you have in the paint, btw, are you pulling for Dook like all of the other state fans are and do in Basketball season?

Not this State fan.

Yall

Not Worried a Bit

about who's coming or who's going the NBA Marketing is helter-skelter and bootleg camping many should be well paid NBAers in their D-League. The guaranteed players are maybe the 1st round players. I'm still puzzled about what they done with Reyshawn Terry in being drafted by Orlando and trade to Dallas just to be outcasted by organization because of guaranteed contracts. What's use to leaving early? Something is wrong in with NBA. They need to re-open ABA league with broadcast games on the Eastern parts of the United States in sub Metro Cities.

Carolina will remain strong with players they have to add in the upcoming class. I like the guard they have coming in from NJ name Dexter. I look at him and tell he's a baller.
Your teams will work best if you have a point-shooter like they have know to help relieve the post players. It's a good chance that Carolina can make to finals this year and maybe next year. We have play to win the next game.

NC State 9th???

As a State fan, I'm not sure how you can put them that high when, according to you, they're starting 2 freshmen neither of which are McDonalds' All-Americans. Wake is starting 3 seniors and have at least 3 guys 6-10 or bigger on the roster and their 11th? I can't see State any higher than 11th and I'm trying hard to find a team worse than State. Maybe Miami will be worse but I'm not so sure.

There will not be a year 5 for Sidney Lowe unless John Wall suits up for him.

the bottom's a mess

Not that big of a difference between 7 through 12. Without looking at the schedules, that's what I've got.

But if Wake loses all those guys, who scores?

State will get points from Smith inside and every report I've heard is that Brown is going to be good. Just because he's not a Big Mac, doesn't mean he can't play.

Singler

Singler may be going to the next level this year. That's the word bouncing around the street a bit and that came directly from a Dookie I know. I would say he is 80-90% returning but Coach K has had some surprise early departures lately that were not ready or worthy of the NBA, so this wouldn't shock me at all if it comes to fruition. Singler is better than all those other early departs.

The word I'm getting..

from my Dookie friends is that the Devils will be losing some guys that maybe aren't expected to leave. He/she/they are not excited about next year. I hope all Triangle teams are good. That would make for exciting basketball!

He's good enough to go

Singler could go (wouldn't stun me) and he's a first-rounder in '09 but he's a lottery pick in '10 if he waits.

— JPG

Singler,....Really?

Lottery pick in 10?  You must be high, is that flavor savor getting to you JPG?  Maybe yall should do a piece on drug testing the N&O Reporters.

You know

You know I hate Dookie but he should stay. Being a Lotto pick is worth the wait. Plus, whether us Heels fans like it or not, we need Duke up top. It keeps the rivlalry exciting. It's also good for the ACC to have that dynamic.

UNC's potentially...

going from 2 seniors and 3 juniors to 3 seniors and 2 sophmores. If Davis stays it's only for 1 more year. Williams has recruited a nice big man class. The position of interest is probably point guard. It's great Drew has gotten to play, but it will still be a learning curve. If UNC wins it all this year, this team may resemble the '06 team with results. I hope they do better, though.

Drew will be very good

Defensively UNC should be much better next year with Davis, Drew and Ginyard on the floor. Even wayne Ellington has improved on the defensive end this year (lately anyway) Drew will be fine. Think about QT last year and frasor this year. It's hard to come off the bench and play 2-3 minute spurts for 7-10 minutes per game and show your true ability.  This team becomes Drew's this summer and he will excell at PG for UNC. He has shown some flashes of brilliance this year and will be an incredible passer. He reminds me of a cross between Derrick Phelps and Ed Cota. Big and strong like Phlelps with good defensive fundamentals and flashy  passer like Cota. His shooting will be better than both of those guys. Drew 2 will be a complete PG with incredible potential.

I have

to look at Drew a little bit more because I notice the last couple games he's improving on the court in playing style. I want see him shoot when he's open to help open up the inside. I know they have pass the ball to the inside but don't force you pass into a turnover.

Drew-freshman, quick, good passer, needs improvement with defense, handling the ball and shooting open shots, turnovers. Quality role player.

Derrick Phelps-Won a national title without being a point-shooter. Good assist man and great defense. Should have been in the NBA could have had NBA title and re-write NBA history books with assists.

Cota-just made everything looks mediocre by the yearly lost with 10 or more. (I have to eat my words after looking the archives of UNC Basketball History and rephrase to say Cota was a record setter in assists and 3 of 4 years in the Final Four) My fault dog you better than the crew that followed after your graduation.

I know if Ty Lawson leaves Coach Williams got winning ways and don't see him losing 10 or more games on yearly schedule.

I think next year surprise player will be Justin Watts because one stage in the tournament in the first game his defense help Carolina through a stretch to win the first game. I think he be an improve Tar Heel player all around with his shooting abilities. He improve his balling handling and passing skills he might be on the rise for the 6th man role.

I like Drew

I get a Cota vibe from him. He just wants to pass and set up his teammates. That's what the point guard is supposed to do. And he'll have a ton of guys to throw to next year, with or without Davis and Ellington.

— JPG

I too think Drew can be good.

I just think he will have to learn to be the "boss" on the fly. Summer ball just doesn't prepare you for the rigors of a college basketball season. I've noticed his passing ability in his limited action. He does have a keen eye to get players the ball in scoring position, especially on the interior. He also can get the ball to the basket. I agree Ellington and Davis will be two excellent options. As I said, I'm hoping for a better team than '06 (which was outstanding considering it's experience).

Drew has

show peers he can shoot it from downtown and be a good assist player every game. Play some hard defense(steal the ball) and don't be too soft on the court(weight room). He have some games left this year and all summer until the season starts to improve on his agility about the game.

his shot

Drew has not shown one time he can shoot from downtown.

he has show to get the ball down to the big fellas ... most notably Davis.

a little fierce battle with the boys in dark blue over the summer ought to get him more suited for the "General" role.
