Evans to start; more injuries for Pack

Bookmark and Share

Senior Daniel Evans will start at quarterback for N.C. State against William & Mary, coach Tom O'Brien said Monday.

But Evans won't have tight end Anthony Hill to throw to Saturday. Hill, a senior, will miss the home-opener with a chest injury adding another important part to the Wolfpack's injured list.

Running back Jamelle Eugene missed the season-opener with a ankle injury and is not listed on the depth chart for this week's game against the Tribe. Receiver Donald Bowens is out for the season with a spine injury.

Russell Wilson, the redshirt freshman who won the starting job during the preseason, suffered a Grade 3 concussion in the second quarter of the Aug. 28 opener against South Carolina. He is back on campus and attending class, but O'Brien said the staff doesn't know what Wilson's status is and is proceeding with Evans as the starter and Beck as the backup.

Evans replaced Wilson late in the second quarter and was 4-for-12 passing for 37 yards with two interceptions as the Wolfpack lost 34-0. Evans will make his 18th career start and will be backed up by junior Harrison Beck.

Though Evans and Beck struggled against the Gamecocks, O'Brien still plans to redshirt highly regarded freshman Mike Glennon.

O'Brien said he did not know how long Hill would be out. He hoped Eugene would return to practice this week and perhaps get into Saturday's game.

There was one piece of good injury news for State. Sophomore corner DeAndre Morgan was only suffering from cramps in the second half of Thursday's 34-0 loss to South Carolina. Morgan will start against the Tribe.

With analytical skills like

With analytical skills like yours, I can see why State turned you down.

Coaches and players do win games. It took O'Brien a couple of years at BC to get the program on the right track. State didn't hire a rookie coach.

it's unreal what has

it's unreal what has happened to the wolfpack over recent years as far as injuries are concerned. at this point though, there's no sense in worrying about it. just gotta keep going forward with whatever we got.

How sad is it that our "good

How sad is it that our "good news" is our players aren't as injured as we once feared?

Glad to hear that DeAndre is

Glad to hear that DeAndre is alright, I was wondering what had happened to him.

here we go again....

If Evans is the best option we have to replace Wilson...buckle up folks, it's gonna be a loooong year. Did you see the offense pack it in when Evans took the field? There's no moxy, no leadership...and hell my three-year has a stronger arm. Jeez. I'd rather see Beck throw a bevy of INT's than see Evans get his brains beat out.

wilson??

ken, can't you get an interview with Russell?

Does It Matter?

It doesn't matter who starts at quarterback for NCSU.  The problems are not with the football players or the coaches.  The problem is the institution.  NC State is a third rate institution, undeserving of Division I status.  The NCSU administration is third rate.  The faculty is third rate.  Most of all, NCSU fans are klutzes, who don't know anything about sports.  When a new coach arrives, their excuse is "these players are the last coach's recruits".  This last for about three years as the team wins three to six games each year.  Then they begin their rumblings for the coach to be fired.  This lasts for three-five years, growing in intensity each year.  When the coach is finally fired, the cycle begins to repeat itself once again.  This is how a NCSU fan lives her life, in constant denial of the root problems.  The New and Observer knows about the cycle, but perpetuates it.  And if by chance, NCSU finally gets a good coach, the N&O will circumvent any success by turning the politicos and the Chapel Hill administration against the coach.  Therefore, NCSU will never have a strong athletics program that competes with UNC Chapel Hill.  The cards are stacked against it, and the fans are so dumb that they will never figure it out.
