ECU sets challenge
ECU could go 0-4 against its nonconference schedule. With App State, UNC, West Virginia and Virginia Tech there is no guaranteed win on the Pirates' schedule.
Almost every college football team plays at least one gimme (most play two). Not ECU.
Due to the geographic disadvantage of Conference-USA, and relative lack of strength as compared to a BCS league, under AD Terry Holland and coach Skip Hotlz the Pirates have annually set up four nonconference challenges.
Does ECU play the toughest schedule in the country? No, and that's not the point of Sunday's college football column. As Holtz said: "There are a lot of people who play nobody and then beat their chest and go 'Look at us, we're 11-1,.' "
ECU doesn't do that and that's commendable, whether you're an ECU fan or not.

Oh well, my original point still stands. NCSU and ECU will be better this year while UNC will take a small step back with their loss of talent. Both were much better than UNC last year. I would almost put them 1a and 1b since State and ECU were close last year and do not play this year, but I am biased.

I know I'm a "homer", but I have to say that overall UNC athletic programs are at a higher profile than anyone else in North Carolina. I hope the best for all the schools in NC, but I hope the best + 1 for UNC. I will also say that kids root for schools growing up, and sometimes choose not to or can not attend that school. Then again, there's always turning someone, like I did with my NCSU grad wife. She's not a big sports fan, but if pushed will declare for UNC (perhaps because that sheep skin pays the bills) :)

State fan suffers from the Jimmy V curse of mediocrity for eternity and UNC fan suffers from baby blue blinders that are so thick they believe they can walk on water. Not saying ECU fan doesn't have its flaws but to make a blanket statement like that is ignorant at the least. People like you stereotype ECU when in reality last year's freshman class coming out of high school had a GPA of almost 3.3 and an average SAT score of close to 1100. As far as your "totem pole" goes, these baby blue blinders watched us win 2 out of the last 5 national titles in basketball and are currently seeing a football program improve to one of the best in the ACC. Our fans hope for an ACC title, which is realistic. ECU fans are known for having a false sense of hope overall in athletics. I remember watching some Pirates buy tickets for 80 bucks to the Super-regional this year only to see us blow you out in both games. Brag all you want about beating our 4-8 football team 2 years ago. We are now improved, experienced and stable. It should be a good game, and I expect the Heels to show up as the better team.

You probably became a fan as you jumped on the bandwagon years ago walking through Wal-Mart since it is Tar-Hole headquarters. Take the four mutual opponents ECU and UNC had last year. Both lost to Virginia, both lost to NC State although State beat down UNC 41-10 while Skip went for it on 2 fourth down attempts instead of kicking a field goal and ended up losing in OT. UNC lost to Va. Tech and WVU and ECU beat both of them. Butch has never beaten ECU and he won't this year, period.

And that is such an ECU fan to go with the classic "well we beat them and then they beat you so that means we're better!" You beat a VT team without Tyrod Taylor who didn't have an offensive line to protect a pocket QB. You beat WVU at the beginning of the season, as we beat them at the end. The fact of the matter is, you're coming in with a false sense of hope to a game that you should probably lose. UNC is the favorite and you're guaranteeing victory. The problem for you is, in the near future, ECU will never be better than they currently are. At the same time, Butch is rapidly building a program and isn't showing signs of stopping. Go ahead and roll the dice as you always have. Making statements like that is probably why you never even had a shot at sniffing UNC's campus.

Butch is rapidly climbing up the recruiting charts, same thing that Bunting did. We see where that ended up. We're not scared of UNC or Butch. And for the record when I was looking at colleges a decade ago I told my father "If I got a full scholarship at UNC, I wouldn't go." He said "Son, if you got a full scholarship at UNC I wouldn't let you go." I have no desire to sniff the stinch that is on that campus or on your shoulders. As an equal opportunity hater, shame on you for turning your back on NCSU and becoming a Tar-Hole, the mosted annoying of sports fan.

Wed, 07/08/2009 - 16:16 — Heels20First of all, I never said we beat WVU. Secondly, you're further advertising your ignorance by comparing Butch's recruiting ability to Bunting's. There was absolutely no comparison, Butch is a much better recruiter. And while you and your father were having this discussion while frying a catfish out in Eastern North Carolina, it is most likely the result of being dominated in every single sport, and yet still having no chance of ever attending the university.
Finally, as much respect as I have for Tom O'Brien and NC State football, life as a Tar Heel is much better than putting up with the Jimmy V curse. So anyone else who begins to see the light as I did, I invite you over.
