Unless you're Michigan, the easiest way to find wins — and build a program — in college football is to schedule Division I-AA teams. No one understands this better than the Big 12, specifically Kansas and Kansas State.
The Wizard of Odds highlights a 10-year study of nonconference football schedules done by The National Championship Issue. Among the stats provided, Kansas and Kansas State have played the most I-AA teams (nine). Tied for second-most on the list with eight is N.C. State.
ACC Now has a breakdown of the nonconference schedules of the ACC and all the BCS conferences for 2006 and 2007.

Sun, 07/06/2008 - 16:37 — Leroy Corso (not verified)What you unc homers (including you, JP) are overlooking is that NCSU doesn't get that sure win (conference win) on the schedule. I'm talking about Duke. So you can add 10 easy games to unc's schedule the last 10 years.

Sun, 07/06/2008 - 00:45 — Anonymous (not verified)I think the article is good. I went to NCSU and I don't know the exact stats but cutting through the thicket 8 games vs AA teams in 10 years is indicative of a program going through a span of tough seasons. As NCSU has been doing, the program has been getting stronger though over the years and with the new coach in place I think we'll see less games vs AA teams in years to come. However playing A or AA teams makes no difference to me as long as we win, and I think that is the eventual goal of any team through its season. Go Pack!
Scheduling
Wed, 07/02/2008 - 14:37 — Worz4UNC (not verified)NCSU across their athletic programs schedule weak sisters across the board in a very significant way. Pick any sport and check out their non-conference schedule. It will be loaded with weak teams in that sport outside the ACC. It's a "win against anyone" philosophy that AD Fowler must espouse to his coaches.
The scheduling speaks for itself

Scheduling
Wed, 07/02/2008 - 14:47 — Worz4UNCNCSU schedules weak teams across the board within their athletic programs. Check any team's non-conference schedule. It will typically be loaded with weak teams within that spport. I believe that is AD Fowler's philosophy in order to keep his job and appears to be working as NCSU typically ranks from the low 40s to the high 50s in the AD Cup, once known as the Sear's Cup.
Times have changed?
Wed, 07/02/2008 - 11:04 — Fred (not verified)Hi J.P.,
I really enjoy your writing and this is a good case-in-point. I remember reading an article a few years ago about Bobby Bowden and how he built up the Florida State program from nothing to a national champion by scheduling the toughest teams he could find. Now, the opposite seems to be true. What goes around, comes around, I guess. Keep up the great work.

Thanks, Fred
Wed, 07/02/2008 - 15:36 — jpg (author)You're right, we need more programs to adopt the old FSU mindset of "anywhere, any time." Even the Noles play two I-AA teams this season.

Wed, 07/02/2008 - 08:00 — What are you looking at? (not verified)JP-I'm also not sure what you are referring to, using the first big chart: AA Games: Idaho 12, Marshall 11, Boise State 11, Northern Illinois 10, Kansas 9, Kansas St. 9, Eastern Michigan 9, Kent State 9, Arkansas State 9, NC State 8, .......
So NC State has scheduled the 10th most AA games scheduled not the second most.
Idaho, Marshall, Boise
Wed, 07/02/2008 - 09:08 — jpg (author)Idaho, Marshall, Boise State and Northern Illinois are not BCS teams. The chart on the Wizard of Odds just lists BCS teams.

a 12, two 11's and a 10 and I'm not even a talented

Which chart?
Tue, 07/01/2008 - 22:15 — jpg (author)The third one, which I'm referring to, has Kansas and Kansas State at 9. And then N.C. State, Oregon State, Iowa State and Vanderbilt at 8.

Math is hard. This must have been written by a liberal arts major.
