GREENVILLE – East Carolina named junior college transfer Reggie Bullock as its starting running back for its season-opener.
The Pirates face No. 12 South Carolina at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Saturday.
ECU coach Ruffin McNeill, who begins his second season, has said the running back position will operate on a rotating basis rather than one single back, with backups Michael Dobson and Torrence Hunt receieving reps as well.
Still, it comes as little surprise that Bullock has won the starting job. He was brought in to make an immediate impact and has impressed the coaching staff, following his spectacular sophomore season at Arizona Western Community College where he rushed for 1,830 yards and 20 TDs.
He was the leading rusher in the National Junior College Athletics Association.
"Justin Jones is looking good and should be back soon," McNeill said.
Not soon enough for the Pirates, who will need every healthy body against the Gamecocks. Jones is expected to contribute a great deal to the offense at inside receiver this season.
Also, sophomore Rio Johnson has beat out junior Brad Wornick and redshirt freshman Shane Carden for the backup quarterback job.
"Rio has done a great job, as has Brad Wornick," McNeill said. "[Offensive coordinator] Lincoln [Riley] is basing the decision on fall training camp and Rio has done a great job. He is maturing quickly."
Johnson served as the third-string quarterback last season and did not play.
