Dungy to retire, Caldwell next for Colts

Bookmark and Share

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy is retiring and the Colts are holding a press conference at 5 p.m. to make the announcement.

Dungy's exit after seven seasons and one Super Bowl title in Indy, means Peyton Manning former Wake Forest coach Jim Caldwell will be the Colts head coach in 2009.

Caldwell, who went 12-52 in eight seasons at Wake from 1993 to 2000, worked with Dungy in Tampa Bay and Indy, adding assistant head coach to his title in 2005 and had been working as Dungy's replacement-in-waiting.

Caldwell preceeded Jim Grobe at Wake and posted one winning season, 7-5 in 1999, before getting fired after the 2000 season. Caldwell's first four teams won three ACC games.

I will miss Dungy!

Tony Dungy is done what all black football coaches in America wants to do. Win a Super Bowl as a black coach. My hats and appreciation goes toward Mr. Dungy. I idolize his acclomplishment and standard he sat forth in the NFL. He reminds me of Tom Landry with his profile and I thought of him as a black version of Tom Landry. I had to put that down on record not wanting to start any controversy about how proud I am of Mr. Dungy. Just being humorous.
