ACC Now

Duke's the new No. 1

Bookmark and Share

UNC had a turn, so did Wake Forest but they're both behind Duke, the new No. 1 in college basketball this week.

The Blue Devils, 18-1, took over the top spot from the Demon Deacons on Tuesday. Duke, which beat Maryland 85-44 on Saturday, climbs to the AP's No. 1 for the 111th week, second all-time to UCLA.

It's the first time since the final poll of the 2005-06 season the Devils have occupied the top spot.

"We’ve had a chance to drink from that cup of No. 1 a number of times," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said Tuesday on the ACC coaches’ teleconference. "It’s a tremendous honor, and we don’t take it lightly."

Wake, which lost to Virginia Tech last Wednesday, dropped to No. 6, one spot behind UNC. The Devils and Deacs meet in Winston-Salem on Wednesday.

Clemson, No. 12, is the only other ACC team ranked in the top 25. Duke's also ranked No. 1 by the coaches.

Duke will fade like last year...

Hope Coach K enjoys being #1 in January. Once his team plays Wake and UNC twice he'll be looking up at about four or five teams ahead of him in the rankings.

Hey Look Coach K

Maybe there will be an article about it!

Will the N&O

Give this banner treatment in the morning? An ACC Now post is not nearly enough to make this bit of news known. Maybe a billboard along 15-501 just to be sure.
