Duke's Elizabeth Williams collects blocks at record pace

Bookmark and Share

Duke freshman Elizabeth Williams has proved a quick study in her first season of women's college basketball.

On Wednesday, the 6-foot-3 forward posted her fourth double-double this season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a 79-62 victory over Georgia Tech. It was her third straight game scoring in double figures.

Williams, who in two previous games had gone out early in foul trouble, adjusted defensively and finished with just one foul. With more playing time, she displayed the skills that have observing raving about her potential.

She collected five blocks and moved into seventh place on the ACC's single-season freshman block list with 66 total blocks. She's 18 blocks away from tying the 84 block mark set by North Carolina's Dawn Royster during the 1983-84 season.

Williams, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., needs just two blocks to tie Duke's freshman record set by Sarah Sullivan during the 1982-83 season.

No. 5 Duke (15-2, 6-0 ACC) hosts No. 8 Maryland (17-1, 4-1) on Sunday.
