The Triangle schools were well represented on the media’s all-ACC teams released Monday. Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State combined for 13 representatives on the first, second, third and freshman teams as selected by the 77 voters of Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Duke’s Mason Plumlee was led all players with 226 points and 73 out of a possible 77 first-place votes. Plumlee finished the regular season ranked second in the league in scoring (17.3 points per game), rebounding (10.3 boards per game) and field goal percentage (58.9 percent). He led the ACC with 17 double-doubles. Duke has had a first-team All-ACC selection in six straight seasons.

N.C. State’s Richard Howell was also a first-team selection with 192 points and 46 1st-place votes. Howell and Plumlee were the only two players to average a double-double in league play, and the N.C. State senior led the league in rebounding with an average of 10.6 rebounds per game.

“He’s one of the most unique players in the country, Howell,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said after the Wolfpack’s Jan. 12 win over Duke. “He’s a kid that every team would want and start and would be so easy to play with. He doesn’t need the ball long, he plays with amazing maturity, and he rebounds the heck out of the ball.”

Joining Plumlee and Howell on the first team were Virginia Tech’s Erick Green, the nation’s leading scorer (225 points, 72 1st-place votes), Miami’s Shane Larkin (224 points, 72 1st-place votes) and Virginia’s Joe Harris (219 points, 67 1st-place votes).

Duke’s Seth Curry received the most votes of those players on the second team, with 178 points. He was joined by N.C. State’s Lorenzo Brown (122 points) North Carolina’s Reggie Bullock (119 points) and James Michael McAdoo (97 points).

N.C. State’s C.J. Leslie (80 points) and Duke’s Quinn Cook (43 points) were selected to the third team. Duke’s Ryan Kelly, whose right foot injury limited him to five ACC games, was an honorable mention selection along with UNC’s P.J. Hairston.

All three Triangle teams had a rookie selected to the all-ACC Freshman team, with Duke’s Rasheed Sulaimon (63 votes), N.C. State’s T.J. Warren (63 votes) and UNC’s Marcus Paige (44 votes).

Wake Forest’s C.J. Harris and Travis McKie were honorable mention selections, and Devin Thomas made the all-Rookie team.

ACC selections

An early November edition of the N&O proclaimed that NCSU would dominate the ACC regular season, the ACC regular season MVP, the coach of the year, the all ACC teams and C.J.Leslie being the player of the year. Excuse me? What happened to State, did the players suddenly lose all that ability to play, were they really not that good to start with. Maybe it was the coach, remember this is a coach that was dismissed at Alabama, not exactly a top of the line basketball school in the SEC. Also, why didn't any other school pick up on him for all that time he was out of coaching until State decided on him. Could it be that the N&O sports staff was just playing up to it's NCSU followers because they haven't had anything to be played up to in a long, long time. Very interesting, I guess the Pack will be glad when Tudor is gone and his unreal predictions for the Pack faithful. A boost from the N&O staff is like a kiss of death.

State

I don't understand how a team can get some much run when they only play six guys? That's why they couldn't uphold their end of all the accolades that were bestowed upon them to start the year. You simply cannot survive a season using the minimum when foul trouble and injury's loom around every corner.

It is not like there were not other capable guys on the bench. No, the bench did not extend to the twelfth man, but Lewis certainly could have gotten more PT and so could have Vanderburg (less, though). It's a shame (state, not me) Gott ignored the European fellow who quit early in the season bc of lack of playing time.

Where Roy plays too many damn people Gott does not play enough.

The reason Gott was unexpectedly fired and ignored for a few years was bc of infidelity. It's basically ignored unless someone like me brings it up. Rest assure it would have been mentioned had he coached at UNC, though, or at least speculated. It is what it is. We all make mistakes ... Some larger than others.

But make no mistake, the talk of state running through the Tourney in GSO is revving up at a fever pitch if you are listening or reading anything this week. Whereas UNC is being treated like the flower pot you forgot to get at your last home as you moved into another.

We'll see ....

agree

Lewis should have gotten more playing time. Vandenburg? I am not so sure about, but maybe with more he wouldn't have looked so lost, so we'll never know.
Speaking of hype, my favorite is Lewis' statement, "We had some stretches where we looked like the best team in the country." Perhaps so, but I must have blinked.
P.S. welcome back from your hiatus.

Lewis' statement

Way back in late July (I kid) when baskets started they did come out on fire and looked as if they were going to do some damage. Then Okie St happened and foul trouble happened and CJL happened and Lo Brown got hurt happened.

It is difficult for ANY TEAM to run the gambit six deep. UK last season was an anomaly although, I believe, they were seven or eight deep. Can't remember, but, none the less, it was an anomaly.

Of course, this IS a new season and while I may not agree I certainly see why pundits say they have a realistic shot to play and win on Sunday bc all one team needs to do is catch lightning in a bottle and state has that ability ... I just don't think it will happen.

Good to be back. I was slow catching on to the site being free again bc I was not logged in anymore. Finally got the notion to lurk and saw all you guys posting and said there was no way all y'all were paying to still "play" :-)

Anywho, looking like I have scored a pair of tickets from a UVa alum friend for tomorrow nights game in their section 12 rows behind one of the goals. Still trying to work out the logistics for me and my son ...

great questions

Easy answers.
According to gsotom, there is an officiating conspiracy against State. Yes, the officials "let" the pack win a few games, so as not to be too obvious. But the losses that they did incur were obviously caused by the officials (they even talked about it on TV, so it must be true)
Regarding the hiring of MG, he and Fur Yow are tight, so that one is easy.
As far as the N&O reporting; any school can have a bad decade or three, so when a team finally dances to the sweet sixteen (won 2 games) and returns practically everyone, while bringing in a good recruit or two, expectations are gonna be especially high. And even moreso where the hype train usually already has a full head of steam prior to the beginning of FB season. Of course with both UNC and dook having a "down" year, it was even more likely that the Pack would just coast through the ACC, thus a great story for the N&O to report on. (Too bad that CJ adhered to that coasting through the ACC concept.)

.....Oops---

special congratulations to the other three players on the first team as well---did not intend to slight anyone. They are all deserving.

Yes,

I too am extremely pleased that Howell's hard work and steady play was recognized and he was able to make the first team---he is definitely States MVP. I was also happy that a player who wears a different uniform made the first team---Joe Harris.

Congratulations to both of these talented and dedicated players; they certainly deserve this distinction.

Good for Howell

Good for Richard Howell. He worked on his game a lot in the off-season, and that work has payed off during the season. Howell works hard and sweats more than any Pack player I've seen in a few years. Congrats to Howell. He deserves it.
