Duke, N.C. State waiting on Wildcats

Bookmark and Share

While North Carolina got a clearer picture of what its roster will look like in 2013, with the early exit of three underclassmen to the NBA on Thursday, Duke and N.C. State are still waiting.

The Blue Devils, on forward Mason Plumlee, and the Wolfpack, on forward C.J. Leslie, are both waiting for their respective pro prospects to make a decision about the NBA draft. The two Triangle teams are also waiting on Kentucky and the fate of a few key recruits. The Wildcats, the prohibitive favorite to win the 2012 NCAA title, are holding all the recruiting cards with the class of 2012.

Kentucky faces Louisville tonight in the Final Four in New Orleans and, with a win, would get either Ohio State or Kansas on Monday for the national championship. The way the NCAA's confusing deadlines work for the NBA draft, Kentucky's raft of potential pros — led by freshman forward Anthony Davis, the AP player of the year — would have only 24 hours to decided to submit their names for the draft.

The Wildcats could lose as many as five underclassmen, with likely a minimum of three — Davis, freshman wing Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and sophomore forward Terrence Jones.

UK coach John Calipari lost four underclassmen to the draft in 2010, including Raleigh prep star John Wall, but reloaded to make the Final Four in 2011 and 2012.

"The flood gates have yet to open at Kentucky," said ESPN analyst and former Duke great Jay Williams. "The way the revolving door has worked there the past four years, they've had the best recruiting class and they could do it again."

Williams worked the McDonald's All-American game on Wednesday and spent as much time talking about the players in the game who have already committed, including two top 20 players to Kentucky, as he did the undecided players. Three of ESPN's top 10 players in the class of 2012 remain uncommitted, and five of the top 21, including forward Amile Jefferson, who is being pursued by N.C. State, Duke and Kentucky.

Duke is also in the running for small forward Shabazz Muhammad, who was the MVP of the McDonald's game with 21 points in the West's win 106-102 win in Chicago on Wednesday. Muhammad, 6-10 forward Nerlens Noel, the No. 1-rated prospect in the class by ESPN, forward Anthony Bennett and Jefferson are all being wooed by Kentucky.

"No other program is in line to possibly lose any many players but replace them with elite talent," ESPN recruiting analyst Dave Telep said. "It's a safe bet that they will gain a pledge from one of the following three: Noel, Shabazz or Bennett. Two would be amazing, three would be illegal."

Telep, who lives in Wake Forest, believes Jefferson, the 6-7 power forward from Philadelphia and 18th-rated prospect in his top 100, will be in the ACC next season.

"From a Tobacco Road perspective, I think he leans to the area but he is having trouble saying no at this point," Telep said.

Both Duke and N.C. State have an available scholarship for Jefferson, even if both Plumlee and Leslie return. Plumlee, a junior, has submitted his name for the draft but has not hired an agent. Leslie, a sophomore, is still in the process of making a decision.

The timetable for the draft, which is June 28, is different this year, and more confusing. The NCAA, under a new rule implemented at the behest of the ACC coaches, has set Tuesday, April 10 as the withdrawal date, in order to give coaches a better idea of who'll be on the roster. The NBA has set its own deadline, Sunday, April 29. There is no penalty for a player to commit to stay on April 10 and then change his mind by the NBA deadline.

"The NCAA deadline is pointless," said Williams, who turned pro after his junior season at Duke in 2002. "You can just wait until April 29 and then decide to go."

N.C. State, which won 24 games and made the Sweet 16 in coach Mark Gottfried's first season, has already signed three McDonald's All-Americans in guard Tyler Lewis, guard Rodney Purvis and forward T.J. Warren. Jefferson, who had eight points and two steals in 14 minutes in Wednesday's McDonald's game, would give them front-court depth, if Leslie stays, or a starting option to go with returning forwards Richard Howell and DeShawn Painter, who'll both be seniors.

The Wolfpack is also recruiting Andrew Young, a 6-9 power forward from Monterey Peninsula College in California. Young is scheduled to make an official visit to Raleigh on April 14.

Williams thinks N.C. State would be considered the preseason favorite in the ACC, with North Carolina, if Leslie returns. He also expects Duke, which went 13-3 in ACC play before an opening-round loss to Lehigh in the NCAA tournament, to contend for the conference title, despite the personnel losses.

Williams compared guard Rasheed Sulaimon, Duke's only signee, to guard Nolan Smith, who led Duke to the 2010 NCAA title. Sulaimon had 18 points and four assists in the McDonald's game.

"Sulaimon will help them a lot," Williams said. "He can attack off the dribble, and create shots for other, and that's what they're going to need. Of course, the addition of Muhammad or Jefferson would change the complexion of the team in a heartbeat, but there's still some talent and experience in the program."

All Duke and N.C. State can do now is wait, on their own players, on the recruits and on Kentucky.

Desperation

I understand little ol ncsu wanting to lie, cheat and steal recruits that UK is going after bc they are desperate to keep pace with their big brothers, but when Dook starts playing along with UK recruits, I just laugh and shake my head. Ol K is desperate to get back to relevance.

lmao

The only thing desperate here is your attempt to belittle your neighborhood rival that is clearly on the rise.

Speaking of lying, cheating, and stealing...isn't that how Roy got Kansas put on probation?  And of course, it was documented that he did such to get the mormom boy this year.

Pot, meet kettle.

Sure

A lot of what I said was to get you or some one else riled up, but you'd be lying if you said you have never stepped back and asked yourself why all of a sudden are these kind of guys wanting to come to state.

like UNC football, nc state is selling themselves out and cheating to do it. Whether it is ever proven, who knows.

CALL ME A LIAR

No, I have never sat back and asked myself why players of this caliber would want to go to State.

I haven't seen or heard anything from any source indicating a pervasive pattern of cheating, although I admit to not following twitter or the partison blog posts where accusations flow like s**t through a goose. On second thought, Gottfried must be a cheater, because he once worked for and continues to be friends with Jim Harrick. People never change and guilt by association is valid, except where Butch Davis is concerned.

I have no doubt that violations occur at State, just like they occur at every meaningful program. An Athletic Director I know once told me that you can be on some guys 24/7 about their behavior and responsibilities and they end up doing something wrong anyway. State is obviously not immune, as CJ Leslie's 3 game suspension earlier this season proves. But it is a huge leap from that to institutional cheating and lack of control.

It is way to early to definitively say that State is back. The early returns are positive, but there has to be several years of sustained success before we can be sure. I think we can say that the reasons to be optimistic about State hoops are more grounded in facts than unbridled hope, at least until Calvin or Lo Brown tweets from some sports agent's party in Miami or some real evidence materializes.

Jpd might be many things :)

... But I trust being a liar is not one of them.

My question was more of something to ponder on than just a straight accusation. It was certainly questions pack fans had back when Butch was hired and recruiting took off like a wild fire. Where did it come from ? How were you able to get those kind of recruits so fast ? Your recent past history certainly doesn't lead one to think you could all of a sudden start recruiting so well. Questions and comments like that. I was merely wanting to put it out there (as well) bc they are worth asking and thinking about bc Mark Gotfried has no past that links him remotely to a recruiting class like he has coming in next season. How did he do that ...

Occam's razor

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best. In this case, the simple answer is that Gottfried is a freakin' miracle worker!

This guy (and his excellent staff) took a team with a losing record, added a transfer from Cal State-Bakersfield and turned them into a Sweet Sixteen participant. Not only that, he got CJ Leslie to actually hustle!

Compared to that, selling State to potential recruits is a walk in the park. No further perks required.

Happy Easter everyone!

maturity

Yes, and not taking anything from MG, but the difference, as well is the maturity in this team. Yo could kind of see it as the season went along.

AT THIS MOMENT...

JPD is just a tired accountant looking forward to seeing his daughter on Easter. As much as I hated to see the college hoops season come to a close, it's a good thing because State's run in the tourney was too much of a distraction (welcome though it was). Still disappointed that 4th shot at the Heels didn't happen.

Wow

You heard it here first folks...

NC State's Mark Gottfried is already cheating in year one, per gvillegatr.

Geez, I know you're clinging to that "everybody does it" argument that you've been using for the past year and a half, but this is a little too soon, even for you gatr.  Glad you have finally come to terms with the UNC scandal though.  I guess this is your way of signaling you've reached the acceptance stage?

Hold on a sec

I never said UNc didn't do anything wrong. I said no one has proven Butch to have cheated; just the Black Santa and a handful of players.

Gottfried, out of coaching for a coup,e of years, has come in and hit a home run as far as recruiting goes. The Black Santa did the same thing at UNC ....

No Proof

Don't be a moron.

Ok, fine

But you ignored my last paragraph.

What are you talking about?

We have averaged out to be about top 15 in recruiting since Sendek's first big class.  Its not like this is some big step up in talent (like at UNC in FB).  We have just had truly horendous coaching until this year.

From Scout

2005 - 11th

2006 - Outside top 25

2007 - 17th

2008 - Outside top 25

2009 - 14th

2010 - 5th

2011 - Outside top 25

2012 - 4th

Couldnt find anything before 2005 or outside the top 25, but there you go.  I know the hodge class was ranked in the top 10.  Same with several other Sendek classes.  This is not even remotely the same as UNC football.  Even two years ago we had a class like this under Sidney Lowe.   Gottfried was really a pretty good recruiter at Bama too.  It was just much harder to recruit there because its Alabama BBall.  Try and use facts in the future and not jusy opinions.  It makes you look stupid.

Let's get this straight

I'm stupid for making my post, but you can't find any info on state being outside the top 25 three separate yrs, but you ignore that fact in your overall avg of how states bball recruiting is in the top 15 over the span of the yrs you post ? C'mon, man.

Correct.

I have seen it posted elsewhere but didnt feel like spending more than 10 minutes looking it up to prove a moron wrong.

Well

You can't avg three 25's into your argument bc that isn't correct. The moron here is you. Starting to see more and more of it from ya.

MAD-SAX!!!

u are CORRECT , ol roy is a bonofied certified cheater, he said he didnt know giving players money and clothes was against the rules, he should have been fired for stupidity, go DUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rival?

Clearly on the rise? Gosh, I kinda hate to admit this, but Dook has had a pretty good program for sometime now.

Haha

Knew that one was coming before I even clicked "Post comment".

I have a feeling that very soon, this not-our-rival nonsense will go away.

Timetable

The way I read it, it doesn't sound like they will only have 24 hours to decide after the April 2 National Championship game.  Sounds like players don't have to decide until April 29 if they want to declare for the pros.  But Plumlee has until a week from Tuesday (April 10) to decide to return to college.

24 hours

Agreed - don't they have a week and 24 hours if they play in the finals on Monday April 2?
