ACC Now

Duke 65, Georgia Tech 61

Bookmark and Share

GREENSBORO - Duke senior guard Jon Scheyer shook off a poor shooting game to come off a baseline screen and fire in the biggest basket of the ACC tournament Sunday afternoon as the top-seeded Blue Devils held on to defeat Georgia Tech 65-61 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

After No. 7 seed Georgia Tech scored nine straight points to cut the deficit to one, Scheyer took a pass from Nolan Smith on the right wing to sink a 3-pointer over Glen Rice with 18 seconds remaining.

Scheyer had missed nine of his previous 12 field goal attempts before that shot. He finished with 16 points, as did backcourt partner Nolan Smith. Kyle Singler scored 20 points to lead the Blue Devils (29-5) as they won their second straight ACC championship and their ninth in 12 years.

Playing its fourth game in four days, No. 7 seed Georgia Tech (22-12) got off to a horrible start, turning it over on its first five possessions. Duke led 17-5 after Smith scored nine points in the first eight minutes.

Freshman Andre Dawkins picked up where Smith left off when Smith was called for his second foul on a charge with 7 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the half. Dawkins scored seven points in a span of 3:06, including a driving, one-handed jam.

Duke led 29-22 at halftime after Singler sank a pull-up 15-footer from the baseline with eight seconds remaining in the half.

Freshman forward Derrick Favors did his best to try to bring Georgia Tech back, scoring 15 of his 22 points in the second half. But the Blue Devils shot 21-for-23 from the foul line in the second half.

Georgia Tech trailed just 42-38 after an Iman Shumpert 3-pointer with 9:31 remaining, but Jon Scheyer made three free throws and Singler hit both ends of a one-and-one to extend the lead back to nine.

The Yellow Jackets’ defense frustrated Duke at times in the second half, but also took costly fouls and failed to secure two defensive rebounds on plays that gave the Blue Devils a huge lift.

Freshman center Mason Plumlee grabbed them both. He fired one back out to Scheyer for his first 3-pointer of the game, and caught the other with two hands and dunked all in one motion.

But despite trailing 60-50 with 3:25 remaining, the Yellow Jackets scored nine in a row – including four by Favors – to close within one point on a Favors jam with 47.9 seconds remaining.

That’s when Smith got the ball to Scheyer, and the 2009 tournament MVP delivered.

I suspect the lack of cogent

I suspect the lack of cogent posts by Duke contributors has something to do with the fact that they are embarrassed to be sharing the same comment board as Blue Cat,
OK GO HEELS.

The ACC Tournament vs the SEC Tournament?

It was a boring ACC Tournament Finals man!! Who wants to watch I can foul you and get away with it DEVILS..but you can't touch me? Well the SEC Tournament Rocks!!! It was like way above the rim!! In your face dunk action..OT...It was Action Pack!!!Couldn't find a strap ticket under $300 after halftime...Whew..the Wall all dat!!!ACC can't afford him...(LOL!)

Great game and one hell of a

Great game and one hell of a ice-water shot by Scheyer! Those of you who posted congrats koodos on the sportsmanship....those of you who didn't (gville)...well I guess since you spelled Duke correctly, that should be all that we can expect.

you dont expect me to be 100% congradulTORY DO YOU?

I just call em like I see them for any team and my key to the game played out like I thought.

Duke simply was not called for as many fouls as they should have been.  It's nothing new.  Tim Brant even pointed it out.

But, the better team on paper won.

G-ALLIGATOR!

SHOW SOME CLASS , U CANT WHINE ALL OF YOUR LIFE ABOUT REFS, HANSFLOPPER GOT ALL OF THE CALLS LAST YEAR, U GO TO YOUR ROOM AND SAY 10 TIMES --- I LOVE DUKE!!!

Dang...that's twice you

Dang...that's twice you spelled Duke correctly. I may need to copy clip those two comments so I can use them to blackmail you later. lol

ho-hum!!

the blue devils rule the acc again! all duke students are smart and unbiased, ok, go duke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats and perspective

Congrats on another ACC title. However, a little perspective (and levity)...in the kingdom (ACC) of the blind, Dook is the one eyed king

hell of a shot by Scheyer.

But i'm afraid my key to the game played out quite well ... a one sided game called by the refs.

It sickens me that Duke continues to get no fouls called on them courtesy of their "hussle" plays while GT continued to get called for fouls on their "hussle" plays.

I can't wait to hear what Coach Hewiit has to say about the refs as Tim Brant (thats the play-by-play guy for Raycom) continued to bring it up throughout the game.

Another great performance by color guy Mike Gminski. IMO, he's the best in the game and, yes, I know where he play college bball at. He's smart and unbiased.

One Sided?

20 fouls called against Tech vs. 17 fouls called against Duke is hardly lopsided but I suppose somebody who thinks "hussle" is  word might not grasp the meaning of "one sided."

as usual

heres, yet, another dook fan who cannot comprehend what he/she reads.

it has nothing to do with the total number of fouls that dook got, but how many that were not called on them.  thats the problem.

ultimatley, they are allowed to play more physical (more so in the full court or in and around the perimeter) than the other team.

kudos to Scheyer nailing the 3 ball that ultimately won them the game.  the guy is big time in the clutch and has been all season long.

Great game on Duke's part

Great game on Duke's part against a tough opponent. I think tech is officially off of the ncaa bubble after that performance. Hopefully, Duke can carry this momentum into the ncaa tourney. Congrats to Duke!

Horrible game management on

Horrible game management on Hewitts part. I am surprised they didn't get blown out.
Congratulations Duke

4 turnovers in 4 possessions
