NEW YORK -- Last weekend, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski made a point of calling Arizona State's Herb Sendek "one of the best coaches in the country."
But Wednesday night, yet again, the Blue Devils had the better team.
Krzyzewski, 21-3 against Sendek when Sendek coached at N.C. State, put one more victory in the head-to-head win column by beating the Sun Devils 64-53 in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden.
As a result, seventh-ranked Duke (5-0) will play No. 13 Connecticut, which blew out LSU in the early game, in Friday's 5 p.m. championship game.
The Sun Devils' (4-1) style was reminiscent of the Wolfpack's during Sendek's 10 years in Raleigh: grinding and defense-focused.
As a result, score was knotted 41-41 with 13:48 left when the Blue Devils hunkered down and started getting the ball to Kyle Singler, the preseason ACC Player of the Year who had only four points on 1-for-6 shooting by halftime. After making a jumper and a hook shot, his 3-pointer gave the Blue Devils a 50-43 cushion, the beginnings of a 19-6 run that was enough to pull away, for good.
Singler finished with 13 points, teammate Jon Scheyer added 16 and Nolan Smith chipped in 14.
Eric Boateng, who played his freshman year at Duke before transferring to Arizona State after the 2005-06 season, had four points and four walks on the first half, had four points and eight turnovers.
Although ASU lost All-American James Harden and first-team All-Pac-10 forward Jeff Pendergraph from last year's NCAA squad, it also returned three starters - and it looked like it from the outset.
Duke trailed by as much as 15-7 early, as the Sun Devils specialized in turning loose balls into buckets. The Blue Devils chipped back with an 11-3 run, tying it 18-18 when freshman guard Andre Dawkins buried a 3-pointer.
Meanwhile, Scheyer, the starting point guard who had 21 assists and zero turnovers through Duke's first four games, turned it over for the first time this season during that run when he stepped on the sideline in front of ASU's bench with 11:58 left.
He made up for it, though.
Duke took the lead with about 5:40 left, when Scheyer (nine first-half points) buried a long jumper from the corner to make it 24-23. ASU kept responding, as Rihards Kuksiks's 3-pointer knotted it at 28-28 with 2:59 left.
But the Blue Devils took a 34-30 lead into halftime when Brian Zoubek buried a free throw, and Scheyer buried a 3-pointer.
Not that it lasted. With 13:43 left, the score was knotted, again, 41-41, when Derek Glasser followed his own 3-pointer with a shot in the lane.

Herb's a good coach ...
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 12:45 — avg_joeBut he's certainly not irreplaceable. Herb made it to the NCAA tournament 5 times in a 10 year tenure with the team, and managed to make it to the sweet 16 on one of those years.
While his record certainly makes him a competent ACC coach, it's not even enough to put him amongst the best NCSU coaches, let alone the best NCAA coaches of all time. It's easy to forget this when you listen to Dick Vitale and others talk about Sendek these days, years after he left NC State.
People also forgot that fans and management of NC State gave Herb 5 years to build the program before he made it into the NCAA tournement. This certainly does not fit with the stupid characterizations people make of NC State as a fan base and athletic program that unfairly runs people out of town.
All the BS I hear about Sendek is usually from a bunch of NC State haters whose opinion doesn't really affect me one way or another. However, I'm surprised at how many NC State "fans" share this self-hatred over a departure that really was not *that* big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.
To those of you NC State fans who are mired in self-hatred over Herb Sendek's departure: Get over it. It's really not that big of a deal.
you simply weren't paying attention ...
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 15:40 — gvillegatrif you think ncsu haters were the ones who talked crap about Sendek. that is TOTALLY false. it has and still is the ncsu fans who have and continue to talk junk about their former coach.
excuse me while I go out and find me a size 38 pant in the waist. the 36's simply don't fit anymore. dam* turkey dinner!

YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT OPINIONS
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 00:43 — foreverdukeITS JUST SOME PEOPLES OPINION THAT DUKE IS TERRIBLE. THEY DIDN'T HAVE THERE BEST GAME BUT THEY DID COME THROUGH. AS FAR AS SAYING HOW FAR THEY WILL MAKE IT, YOU DON'T KNOW. I HAVE FAITH IN THEM AND THINK THEY WILL DO FINE. I THINK THE ACC WILL HAVE SOME GOOD TEAMS THIS SEASON AND DUKE WILL BE ONE OF THEM. GO DUKE!
thats why
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 10:17 — gvillegatrJason Willams agreed with the goober and drunk Doug Gotlieb when Doug said DUIke had zero athleticism at most of their positions.
ASU wasn't even ranked and gave them trouble. fast, athletic teams will consistently beat DUIke all season. DUike fans (like you) who continue to disagree that point, year after year, simply do not want to accept the truth.
They gave them trouble
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 12:12 — willncsubecause Sendeks teams always made other teams look sloppy. Painful to watch.
ACC POY...
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 00:53 — Heels20...It's gotta be between Ryan Kelly and Brian Zoubek.
Patented Herb scoring drought
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 00:27 — JamesinWillowSpringsWhen the game was in the balance in the second half, Herb's Sun Devils went on one of his patented scoring droughts. Saw it countless times at State and it doomed the Sun Devils tonight.
Just one of the many aspects of Herb's tenure that gets overlooked when State gets taken to task for "letting him go" or "running him off."
JIWS
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 00:42 — gvillegatrwhile I do not disagree with your assessment of Herb this evening, I do object with you watching the game. You are prolly the president of "keep Sendek out of my line of sight and please don't talk about him." so why did you watch this evening???
First of all, "prolly" is
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 01:11 — JamesinWillowSpringsFirst of all, "prolly" is not a word. It only costs you two extra keystrokes to type "probably." Make the effort.
Second, LOLOLOLOL @ the notion that because the national lovefest with Herb rolls along, strong as ever, I should somehow AVOID watching the game. What else am I going to watch? F**king Glee? No thanks.
"prolly"
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 10:12 — gvillegatris an internet word. I do not use it in the real world. but, thanks for the advice anyway.
and, yes, you should be watching something else (anything else) but Herb Sendek. All you do is is go "crazy woman" everytime he is mentioned here at ACCNow. so why would you want to watch him?? the only reason I could thiink of is you secretly pull for DUIke in basketall like most state college fans do.
Thanks, James.
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 00:31 — JPDOhioAs I watched the second half, I had this overwhelming feeling of having seen this before. But I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Thanks to your post, now I remember.
Sendek locker room talk...
Thu, 11/26/2009 - 12:15 — willncsuOk team, the plan is to keep it close by making the game really sloppy until there are about 10 mins left. Then we will lull them to sleep by going cold for 5 mins. They will never know what to expect when we shoot 25 3's in the last 5 mins.
the ACC
Wed, 11/25/2009 - 23:21 — gvillegatris going to be a down conference this season. be prepared to hide your head (entire conference) all seaosn long.
DUIke is terrible. it is beyond me why Scheyer is still bringing the ball down the court when he is clearly their best 3 pt threat. makes no sense. this team won't make it past the first weekend, again, this season. no athleticism.
