Drescher: Save your boos for the pros

Bookmark and Share

The topic of booing college football players has taken on a life of its own on the Internet since Daniel Evans' performance against William & Mary on Sept. 6.

Luke DeCock's column about Evans started the dialogue and Executive Editor John Drescher continued the conversation with his Sunday column from the Q section.

Drescher's stance:

"DeCock stood up for Evans. I'll stand up for all college players. I don't think we should boo them, except possibly for poor sportsmanship or a clear lack of effort.

There's a difference between athletes who play in high school, college and the pros. That difference isn't just about talent. It's also about their age, their compensation and our expectations."

Anyone see Rutgers' Fans Booing?

I was seeing Rutgers' fans, and more importantly, their students, booing and "gesturing" during the UNX loss. The cameraman made sure to keep the shot for as long as possible, too. This was on a Thursday night, in front of a national audience. Still, I hear nothing mentioned about this in the media. But, to have this whole "boo-ha-ha" about the NCSU v William and Mary game is unreal to me. There was barely WRAL coverage of this game, yet it is a regional story that won't die? State fans weren't even booing the players. They were booing NCSU for an emotionless effort against a lower-tier opponent.

it's not the players getting

it's not the players getting booed you morons! why does this topic keep being brought up? and more importantly, why is this such a big story happening at a state game? you think there's no booing at other stadiums? hah, give me a break. once again the local media exposes how out of touch with the fans they really are.

It was definately the coach

It was definately the coach being boo'd for keeping Evans in the game so long when it was clear he was having a miserable game. Can you really blame State fans? Had Daniel Evans stayed in we would have ended up with a loss to W&M.

I read this on Sunday while at work.

I was somewhat surprised to see this topic in the Editors writings for the Sunday edition. It seems a subject more suited to the sports section. Unless, ofcourse, we should apply his reasoning to life in general. I agree that booing college players is in poor taste. Perhaps in the future fans should qualify who they are booing. Such as, booo ref booo!, and boo O'Brien boo!!
Boo jpg booo for giving UNC no votes in your top 25 (haha, just kiddin')

More important things to worry about

There are much more important things that Drescher should be writing about, like why there is way too much Charlotte stuff in our sports section and throughout the newspaper. Booing poor efforts of college players is quite acceptable considering how much tickets are for college games. If you don't want fans to boo, put it on the ticket.

booing

The coach -- it was the coach being booed. Why can't you figure that out?
