ACC Now

Don't second-guess Paul Johnson

Bookmark and Share

"The guys who do the games, they're morons."

That was first-year Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson's take on the second-guessing by ESPN announcers of Johnson's decision to go for it on fourth down late in GT's 20-17 loss to Virginia Tech.

We are nothing if not fans of candor in the media so when Johnson calls anyone a moron, that's good copy. But how quickly do you think Johnson was scolded by Greensboro for his frankness?

At Navy, and without a conference affiliation and television partner (i.e. the major source of conference income), Johnson could shoot from the hip at will. Something tells me, such a practice is frowned upon by the ACC, not to mention it makes for an uncomfortable pre-game pow-wow with the next ESPN crew.

By the way, the morons in questions were N.C. State's Terry Gannon and David Norrie.

The real moron comment they

The real moron comment they made was about going for two, down 17-15. Why not? What good does 17-16 do you? You still have to make a field goal to win. And VT blocked an extrapoint in the first half!!

Announcers

Like Coach Johnson said - "morons" basketball announcers trying to tell a Football Coach his business!!

So What

Johnson may or may not have been right in his call. But there is no question that he was absolutely trying to win (vs trying not to lose). Neither of the announcers have any credentials to second guess the call -- unfortunately they feel they must yap all the time giving opinions instead of calling reporting the game. I certainly hope the ACC doesn't take a slap at Johnson -- he's bringing life back into what was a pretty stale program.

considering Terry Gannon

considering Terry Gannon needs to be doing just basketball, i'm good with what he said! just another example of how bad ACC footballl is perceived.

I can't believe he said that...

but I like it!
