It's the end of the decade, so the Internet is kneedeep in listville. Max Preps takes a whack at the All-Decade high school team.
The list itself — with the usual suspects Tim Tebow, Reggie Bush and Adrian Peterson — is not all that titillating (there's way too much emphasis on college and professional success for supposed high school list) but the comment thread is.
Readers have taken up the cause for erstwhile Albermarle legend T.A. McLendon. Noted for his inability to take care of the ball at N.C. State, there's no denying McLendon's high school prowess (178 touchdowns).
Come on, Max Preps, give "Touchdown Anytime" his due.
Another interesting nominee is former Wake slinger Ben Benjamin Mauk, who tore up the Ohio record book. This list would have been a thousand times better had they thrown in a few high-school heroes, who either didn't get it done in college or never got to the NFL.

Protect the ball
Wed, 08/05/2009 - 14:43 — heelsno1The T.A. fumble in Kenan Stadium (his junior season) was a mammoth heartbreaker for NC State fans. It was a huge gift to the Heels. I was there and had a clear view of that decisive play. If T.A. had properly protected the ball and maintained possession, then State would have won the game in dramatic fashion.
Albemarle
Wed, 08/05/2009 - 08:45 — brewerjaHave to correct the spelling. It might sound like Albermarle, but there's only one 'r' in the word.
TA will never be forgotten.
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 23:18 — mad_maxTA will never be forgotten. sure he fumbled a few too many times and at the wrong time, but there's no denying that he was a monster coming out of the backfield. i've never seen a back at nc state run with such power and determination. however, the main reason he will never be forgotten...the contraversial ending against unc that heels20 already pointed out.
I just wonder...
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 23:56 — JPDOhioIf TA's considerable success his freshman year went to his head and contributed to his downfall as much as his injuries did. As good as we was in high school, I doubt anyone really expected him to emerge as a force so early. Such fame is not easy for a young man to handle.
I remember an N&O article not to long ago reporting that TA was home waiting for someone to call him offering an opportunity to resume his football career. That told me all I needed to know.
I completely agree. I
Wed, 08/05/2009 - 00:15 — Heels20I completely agree. I remember a conversation I had with my brother when TA was a freshman. He mentioned how TA could break tackles better than just about any college RB in the country, but the way he ran the ball was going to lead to durability issues. He tried relied too much on collisions and tried too hard to be a power back.
As easy as it is to bring up the negatives, such as fumbles and injuries, he did have his bright moments. That shootout between NC State and UVA when TA broke those tackles on the way to a long TD run was about the loudest I've ever heard Carter Finley (next to Daniel Evans' TD pass against BC and the end of the victory over FSU in 1998). TA had a lot of talent that went to waste. His decisions on and off the field didn't make him look as though he was coachable, and unfortunately, he's learning the hard way.
The one I remember most.
Wed, 08/05/2009 - 09:12 — JPDOhioI think it was against Texas Tech at the end of the game when he broke several tackles while tiptoing along the sideline to score a late touchdown. It was amazing and I am pretty sure won that game for State. I just hate to see that much talent go to waste. Reminds me of Maurice Clarett, which is another shame.
i remember a game against
Wed, 08/05/2009 - 16:10 — mad_maxi remember a game against miami...i think he had 96 rushing yards at the end of the first quarter.
@TT
Wed, 08/05/2009 - 14:07 — willncsuI think he scored 5 TD's. It was amazing. Still, he always fumbled at the worst possible time and angered more than impressed.
I think you are right
Wed, 08/05/2009 - 18:03 — JPDOhioOn both points.
TA fumbles
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 15:37 — sbas2weren't many of TA's fumbles his freshman year a result of playing with a broken hand? Didn't TA break his hand his freshman year and play with a cast? i am pretty sure he had a fumble or two at Virginia and Maryland which may have resulted from his inability to hold onto the ball due to some type of cast being on his hand or arm. however, i do remember one fumble at Florida State in which Florida State's star linebacker just plain manhandled him.
The ones that stand out include...
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 16:27 — Heels201. Maryland his sophomore year without a broken wrist. State had a 24-23 lead with hardly any time left and all they had to do was get a first down and protect the ball. TA fumbled and it ruined Philip Rivers' senior night.
2. UNC his junior year. Following a contraversial call in the previous play, TA tried to leap over the pile, only to have the ball pop out from behind him. UNC recovered to win 30-24 and upset the Pack.
3. The straw that broke the camels back. The final game of the 2004 season, and TA's last in a Wolfpack uniform. A fumble against ECU left TA benched for a long period of time. The move to bench him illustrated the coaches' frustration with the junior's fumbling problem. TA's decision to leave a week later illustrated his frustration of the decision and his pure ignorance.
Harrison Beck
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 13:26 — izzykareemHe tore it up in high school, then tore out wolfpack hearts.
Forget T.A.?
Tue, 08/04/2009 - 13:46 — SurferNo worries, we'll never forget T.A. McFumble. Hate to see such a downturn, but probably should have stayed at State for his senior year. On another note, J.P. you should take a closer look at the comments you refer to when saying, "Readers have taken up the cause". Four people made a total of seven comments and one commenter (Joe - coincidence perhaps) made a point that T.A. should be included in the list. I would hardly say that that qualifies for, "Readers have taken up the cause"
