Does USA want K for 2012?

Bookmark and Share

Yahoo! Sports writer Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday, citing unnamed sources, that USA Basketball senior men's national team director Jerry Colangelo is planning to approach Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski about reprising his role coaching the U.S. for the 3-year run-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

Krzyzewski coached the U.S. during the last quadrennial, which ended in August with the U.S. beating Spain in the gold-medal game at the Beijing Olympics. At that time, Krzyzewski said he would not continue but praised the move to keep Colangelo on to continue the progress USA Basketball made in the three years preceding the Beijing experience.

UPDATE: After Duke beat Michigan for the 2K Sports Classic, Krzyzewski was asked about it and said it was too early for players and coaches to commit to 2012.

“I’m open to anything that will help USA Basketball but that doesn’t mean I’ll commit to being the coach again,” he said. “It’s a big commitment. I love Jerry and what they’re doing. It’s just not the time yet. What I’m doing with these kids, that’s my job. After the season is over, I’ll [consider it]. But I can’t do that right now, give it full attention. That’s not right.”

Here's the audio of Krzyzewski answering the question. It picks up with him explaining how USA Basketball will approach the four years leading into 2012.

(I apologize in advance for the knocking noise at the end of the clip. That was the box score I was holding hitting the microphone as I scribbled his answer.)

hhhmmm

Gawd I Hope So!!  but he will "politely" decline the second go around.  DUike basketball has become 2nd or 3rd tier since he took the reighns of USA basketball.
