First Look

DURHAM — Kyle Singler had all the tough assignments late in the game — hitting free throws and stopping hot-shooting Jimmy Baron — but Singler and the Devils worked it out, coming back from a scary 12-point deficit to squeeze out an 82-79 victory over Rhode Island at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday.

Rhode Island was outplaying eighth-ranked Duke while leading 34-33 at halftime but Jon Scheyer's buzzer-beater seemed to lift the Devils for the second half. Scheyer also hit the final two free throws of the game to give Duke that key three-point margin. Barron's last shot from halfcourt glanced off the side of the rim.

Duke couldn't generate much out of its set offense and couldn't push the pace with Rhode Island shooting fairly well (13-for-26) from the field. Duke had made just four field goals in the first 17 minutes and trailed by 12 before Gerald Henderson made a big dunk of a baseline move, Nolan Smith scored on a driving layup and Kyle Singler sank a 3-pointer to give the Devils some juice.

Rhode Island forward Delroy James was making Singler chase him all over the court while hitting a couple of 3s and scoring 11 first-half points.

its early..

It's early in the season. I doubt any team is at top form right now. RIU shot lights out, 10-14 from 3pt is pretty good id say. It was a good game (though i was rooting for RIU of course). But if this game was played in January, i think Duke would blow RIU out. RIU had to play thier best, while Duke had to play poorly, and that's what happend. This game never should have been that close, goes to show how much work still needs to be done. But like i said, its still early. Every good team has thier bumps earlier in the season and gets a scare of two.

it was another bail out from

it was another bail out from the refs (and the white guy who thought he could make every thing for RI). neither of Singlers drive to the bucket should have been fouls. it seems like every year, when it is close, the refs salivate at the chance to call a foul for DUIke.

Wow...You know nothing

Those two fouls you're complaining about were without a doubt fouls. While I know you were on the edge of your seat pulling for URI, and despite their crazy-lucky shooting performance from all over the court, they still lost. Infact there were a few baskets that could have been And1's in favor of Duke, but they didn't get called. And on top of that, Singler had to fight through fouls at the top of the key just to reach the basket almost everytime he drove to the basket.

I know more than you!

go back and look at the video.  it does not lie.  on Singlers first drive, he went away from the bucket as he picked up his dribble and was never touched.  ref ASSumed he was.  on Singlers second drive, he drove straight at the hoop and the RIU defender got all ball.

i call spades a spade.  i fairly critiqued (msp?) UNC's first game where they played no defense.  But, yes, I was rooting fro RIU all the way!

Maybe it was RI uniforms....

Seriously, I think the team from Durham is getting it's legs. They'll be better. It'll be January before we know it.

UNC on Saturday

Carolina played without TWO starters and won easily against Penn. Duke had all five starters play and should have lost to Rhode Island. Maybe "K" should have recruited more then hang out with Lebron and Kobe the last 3 years.

I didnt hear any comments from Roy yesterday in regards to the few empty seats yesterday at the Smith Center. Did you? LOL

When does Duke play a road game? Remember, games at MSG or the Meadowlands dont count as road games.

at the under 12 timeout,

at the under 12 timeout, DUIke is down 5 and is simply perplexed by the "devilish" defense thats getting put on them.
