Duke's pursuit of Raleigh's John Wall, a presumed "one-and-done" basketball recruit, illustrates both a shift in Mike Krzyzewski's recruiting philosophy and just how desperate the situation is for Duke.
In the aftermath of the 2004 Final Four, losing Luol Deng after one season and Shaun Livingston before he got to campus, Coach K made a conscious decision to avoid one-year college players.
Maintaining some semblance of academic integrity was an ancillary benefit to the decision but not the primary motivating factor. The disruption of the recruiting cycle is what kept Coach K away.
Two years after Deng departed in '04, before what would be one of K's worst teams (worst being a relative term) since the early 1980s, the Duke coach was still stinging from the twin decisions of Deng and Livingston, both of whom he thought he would have for at least two seasons each.
Asked in Greensboro in the preseason how the program got the point that '06-'07 would be a rebuilding season and why Duke had lost in the Sweet 16 in two straight years, Coach K said:
"We had Luol one year and we never had Shaun," Krzyzewski said. "Those two guys would have made a huge difference."
Duke went two recruiting classes without a serious pursuit of a one-and-done prospect. (Josh McRoberts, the No. 1-rated prospect in the class of '05, stayed two seasons.)
The Blue Devils did sign mid-level forward prospects David McClure (in '04) and Jamal Boykin (in '05) based on the premise that both would stick around for four years, and perhaps develop into senior leaders in the mold of Shane Battier, albeit less talented.
Neither four-year project worked out according to plan. McClure, as a fifth-year senior, eventually became a functional role player. Boykin transferred to Cal after one-and-half seasons.
Only after the disappointment of 0-4 finish in March '07 did the reality of the changed recruiting landscape hit Duke.
The Devils pursued blue-chip forward Patrick Patterson, who chose Kentucky instead.
They struck out again in the spring of '08 with top forward prospect Greg Monroe, who chose Georgetown.
In the immediate aftermath of the successful yet unconventional '08-'09 season, which included the ACC title, Coach K promised to hit the recruiting trail in search of a conventional point guard and a capable post option.
On Sunday, the Devils landed Seth Curry, who'll transfer from Liberty after leading all freshman scorers this past season. Curry plays neither of K's intended target positions, but he will slide nicely into the combo guard role of Jon Scheyer in '10-'11.
But Curry can't help Duke in '09-'10, a potentially great Duke team if both Gerald Henderson and Kyle Singler return. Wall can, hence the mercenary's visit with Duke on Monday, a recruit K wouldn't have touched five years ago. A less desperate Coach K would have wished Wall good luck, not promised him Jason Williams' playbook.
The truth is, as Krzyzewski himself admitted it after UNC's win in Durham on Feb. 11, UNC's just better than Duke right now. And despite public protests to the opposite, by both sides when the subject is brought up, beyond winning, what matters most to both Duke and Carolina is keeping up with the other side.
Since Duke's most recent Final Four appearance ('04), UNC has been to the Final Four three times, with one title in the bag and another just 80 minutes away.
That's why Duke is back in the one-and-done business. Right or wrong, it's that simple.
####
Either by their own volition, or their own recruiting failures, Duke has avoided one-and-done recruits.
While Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has been criticized for this decision, Ohio State's Thad Matta has been burned by it.
Ohio State freshman B.J. Mullens declared for the NBA Draft earlier this week. Since '06-'07, OSU has had five players (Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr., DeQuan Cook Kosta Koufos and Mullens) leave after just one season.
No Duke players have left after one season over the same period.
How does Duke's record compare to Ohio State's?
| DUKE | OHIO STATE | |||||
| Overall | ACC | NCAA | Overall | Big Ten | NCAA | |
| 2008-09 | 30-7 | 11-5 | 2-1 | 22-11 | 10-8 | 0-1 |
| 2007-08 | 28-6 | 13-3 | 1-1 | 24-13 | 10-8 | 0-0 |
| 2006-07 | 22-11 | 8-8 | 0-1 | 35-4 | 15-1 | 5-1 |
| Totals | 80-24 | 32-16 | 3-3 | 81-28 | 35-17 | 5-2 |
They have virtually the same overall winning percentage and the same conference winning percentage.
They each have a conference title — Duke in '09, OSU in '07.
They each have one Sweet 16 appearance — Duke '09, OSU in '07.
OSU went to the Final Four in '07 and Duke did not reach the Final Four in the three seasons. Duke did make the NCAA Tournament all three years, OSU did not (missed in '08).
Which program would you rather be?

Mon, 07/27/2009 - 09:58 — zyrobottYesterday, the Democrats.org blog featured an excerpt from a story we received from Kristine Reger, a life-long Wisconsinite and mother of three who attended President Obama’s Health Care Town Hall in Green Bay. Today, we asked Kristine to write a guest post to share her full story: Hi everyone. I submitted my health care story to Organizing for America online, and they’ve asked me to write a guest blog about my experience. Here's what I can tell you: Though I'm a lifelong Democrat, my husband and I raised our three kids in a mostly Republican suburb. For years and years, I kind of rolled over and skirted political conversations with my friends and neighbors. I didn’t want to engage in debate. Then last fall, after more than 20 years, I finally decided to have the courage of my convictions. Barack Obama inspired me to get involved. I wasn’t happy with the direction of our country and I thought to myself: enough is enough. I spent lots of time researching the issues and learning about then-Senator Obama’s positions. Eventually, I figured out that I could make a real difference in my own network of family and friends by reaching out to people through email and responding to all the emails going around that I knew weren’t true. You know what I learned? My friends are still my friends. People have started coming to me to understand what’s going on; they rely on me to tell them the truth. Since the election, President Obama has inspired me to stay involved. I think he’s so sensible and so right on so many of the issues I care about. I woke up at 5am yesterday to attend the Health Care Town Hall in Green Bay. It was fascinating – great questions, so much excitement and not an inch of space in the room. Unfortunately my health care story is not unique, it’s typical. My husband and his business partner run a small machine shop their fathers’ founded in the 1950s. They’ve always provided their employees with single and family coverage, but as premiums have become more expensive, they’ve been forced to modify the kind of coverage they provide. Between this year and last, costs have increased 8 percent. In order to continue to provide health insurance, they’ve had to switch to a high deducible plan. Last year, they paid $132,000 in health care costs for a plan with a $2,500 deductible. Those costs are cutting into their profits and eating into our family income. Truth be told, the policy isn’t all bad – there are actually some great things about it. For example, all our preventative care, including physicals, mammograms and colonoscopies, are covered regardless of whether or not we’ve reached our deductible. That focus on preventative care is great - its something a reform plan should build on. But when you add up all the costs of our plan, we have to spend an awful lot to receive any of the benefits. It’s true that we’re in the midst of a terrible recession. But I don't think maintaining the status quo when it comes to health care is an option. I keep thinking if small businesses like my husband’s are the life blood of our economy, how will it ever bounce back when small business owners can’t eek out a profit because health care costs are so high? Everyone I know cares about this issue – my Republican friends care just as much as my Democratic ones. We’re all living with the consequences of a broken system. Though we might not all agree on the exact solution, we all agree something has to be done. If people see a part of themselves in my story, and are inspired to get involved, then maybe we’ll be able to make the people in Washington pay attention to us and get something done. Kristine Reger is a life-long Wisconsinite and mother of three. She worked as a high school English teacher before staying at home to raise her children for 19 years. She is currently a self-employed travel agent. One and Dones who Duke Recruited
Mon, 04/06/2009 - 21:58 — DDB4208Please read this. I don't think you hate
Duke but these are the facts. I would be happy to hear you argue your
case after learning these facts.
Coach K has recruited possible One-n-Dones every year since '03
2003
Ndudi Ebi - K offered Ebi and Ebi decided to go Pro straight out of high school
Kris Humphries - committed to Duke then decided to go to Minn and then went to NBA after Freshman year
Luol Deng - K knew he would go to NBA to support family after freshman year
2004
Shaun Livingston - K knew that he was thinking about NBA and knew he would probably go after one year
J.R. Smith - K recruited him; Smith went straight to the NBA
2005
Josh McRoberts - Didn't go pro immediately but many thought he would be a one and done before he even went to Duke
Andre Bynum - Duke recruited him; Went to NBA
2006
Mike Conley - Duke briefly recruited him; he was a one and done
Thad Young - Duke recruited him; he was a one and done
Brandon Wright - Duke offered him; he was a one and done
2007
Eric Gordon - Duke offered him; he was a one and done
Donte Green - Duke lightly recruited; he was a one and done
Anthony Randolph - Duke recruited; he was a one and done
Kevin Love - Duke offered him; he was a one and done
2008
Greg Monroe - Duke offered him; He is a possible one and done
That is a total of 10 one and dones that Duke has recruited since 05.
Duke has recruited possible one and dones every single year. If
doing this is an act of desperation then Duke has been desperate when
they signed Maggette in the class of 98. Duke even recruited Kobe and
Lebron out of High School! And Coach K knew that never of them would
stay more than one year if they did come.
While this article may not be anti-Duke I think it does sound
anti-John Wall. John is a great kid who would have gone straight to the
NBA if it was allowed. I don't know if you were aware of this but
John's mother is very sick and John wants to get her the best medical
care. She recently had another brain aneurysm. Coach K would never go
after some one who he thought was a bad person or who would represent
Duke poorly. In fact I heard Nate James say they were going to offer a
kid but when they saw the kid starting yelling at his coach on the AAU
Circuit they stopped recruiting him. Duke has not been as successful as
they have been in years past but this does not mean they are desperate.
If you still persist in your argument I would love to hear it.
Wall
Mon, 04/06/2009 - 13:42 — cmsmithMost of us Duke fans would prefer that K recruit only great people like Greg Paulus. Unfortunately, that would not keep Duke near the top of the college basketball pile any more than only recruiting Bobby Frasors would do that for UNC. So, as in football, you go for the best players who can qualify for admission, hope they'll benefit from the college experience for however many years they stay in school, and trust that they'll also make good representatives of the school both on and off the court/field while also displaying the athletic ability that interested the coach in recruiting them in the first place. What happens re their careers post college is out of everybody's hands as college sports, indeed life itself, is such a crap shoot. Bottom line: I hope Duke lands Wall, but won't be surprised if he winds up at Kentucky or Carolina. That's just the way it is in college sports for our time.
Desperate act by Duke
Sun, 04/05/2009 - 19:41 — tsbridgesDuke Desperate? maybe....why not go after Wall! who would not...Now i have read numerous comments about K being desperate... and being dogged out! Alot of hate from Tarheels out there....its good reading? just wondering? but if Carolina wins all is good with Heel- Nation! but if the Spartans come out on top monday night, well we all have seen them crocodile tears run down Old Roys face after a loss! (sorry about the Kansas game 08) not a Duke fan and definitely not a Heel fan, but Coach K will have a team back at the top or on top, whether we like him or not...he is definately not stupid nor desperate; he has just seen a better team over there in Chapel Hill in just recent years...K a bad recruiter i think not! just not as good or as fortunate as Roy lately....recruiting will not always go Roys way nor Ks way...thats just the way it is_Jayhawk fan
Haters miss the point
Sun, 04/05/2009 - 07:46 — pharaohfitzGee, if I were going to change my recruiting and needed to understand the one and done mind set, what would I do? I would probably coach the best professional basketball players in the world, build a team with prima donnas and win a gold medal in the process whilst establishing a very fine network for my future pro prospects to utilize when they decided to leave college.
The "article" is idiotic and, as usual, blinded by the beat up Duke while they are down mentality. No body gave a crap until they started winning. K's decision to coach in the Olympics was, as usualy, genius. Think about it, you are some high school phenom with a bunch of handler agent wannabes telling you a bunch a self serving crap - Who is really going to be able to get you up to speed for the pro game with all the netoworking contacts you need to make a good decision? How about the guy who just molded the best of the best into a real "team" and won a "world" championship!
Desparate in recruiting Wall? I don't think so. Who wouldn't recruit him? K always puts his kids first when it comes to their future. The guy is in the Hall of Fame, has 3 NCAA championships and an Olypmic championship. I don't think he needs to impress recruits or hack "writers" or media idiots.
If you want to suck up to Duke haters, write for the Tar Heels' college paper. One day they might win 5-6 straight ACC tournaments and back to back championships....
Poor article
Sat, 04/04/2009 - 17:01 — cwpacer12This really is one of the weakest stories I've read about Duke's ability to recruit. You have this premise that Coach K made a "conscious decision" to avoid recruiting "one and done" college players after the 2004 season, and you call him desperate for actively recruiting John Wall, a self-proclaimed one and done. Yet, in between those two times, you reference the "one and done" type players Josh McRoberts, Brandan Wright, Patrick Patterson, and Greg Monroe that Duke actively recruited (landing 1 of those 4). So which is it? Does Coach K recruit these type of players or doesn't he?
There was no major philosophy change after 2004 that caused Coach K to shy away from recruiting the top talent in the nation. It was common knowledge that Josh McRoberts was a projected lottery pick had he declared coming directly out of high school, and yet Coach K STILL recruited him. You could say the same things about Brandan Wright, Greg Monroe, Patrick Patterson, and even Kyle Singler when he was a high school senior.
The common fact with all of these recruitments is that Coach K has always recruited the best players in the country, regardless of when their NBA potential would be explored. Coach K hasrecruited players like Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, Ousmane Cisse, Luol Deng, Shaun Livingston, Shelden Williams, Josh McRoberts, Brandan Wright, Greg Monroe, Kyle Singler, John Wall, and Harrison Barnes knowing full well these guys are talented enough to leave Duke early for the NBA. Luol Deng was the best player not named Lebron James in the class of 2003. Yet Coach K recruited him. Carlos Boozer stated during his recruitment he had no intentions of playing college basketball more than 2 years, yet he still landed at Duke. We could discuss about countless other recruitments that show how weak your argument is. Heck, Duke even recruited Kobe Bryant.
So, to call Duke desperate for recruiting John Wall from the get go and citing Coach K's conscious efforts to shy away from "one and dones" as validation for this so-called desperation is quite weak. Duke has been looking at point guards all over the 2009 and 2010 classes, and John Wall is the best of them. That Duke is interested is hardly desperate.
Duke has been interested in Wall for longer than you assert too. In fact, I wonder how desperate you consider it for UNC to open it's recruitment of John Wall on the eve of Final Four weekend when Roy gave Wall a telephone call (on the first day of the recruiting dead period, no less). How is that less desperate?
Now, it's that simple.
Simply put
Fri, 04/17/2009 - 22:53 — ronaldetarheelYou're an idiot! K is desperate....he's behind Roy! He was behind during the Coach Smith era and now he sees the same coming again. The fact is he's behind....way behind. Panic is starting to set in.
Let's just hope for you dookies sake that he does not come up with another hip/nerve problem and leaves the team again. Who would he turn it over to..Collins or Wojo? What a joke of a program!
JPG
Fri, 04/03/2009 - 13:07 — wog07What is your article going to be titled about Roy's involvement with John Wall? Considering what a tool you are, I'd imagine it would be something along the lines of "Savvy act of genius by UNC"
Pathetic
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 20:35 — doublecureThis whole column is weak, but your final point is truly ludicrous. You have cherry-picked 2 out of three years that are Duke's worst in a quarter century and Ohio State's best. You could run the same analysis and "prove" that Florida's program is better than UNC's.
This decade Duke won 7 out of 10 ACC titles, a national title, more games than anyone else, and more NCAA tourney games than anyone else. We're doing just fine, thank you.
Way to miss the point, genius
Thu, 04/02/2009 - 14:58 — jpg (author)The comparison between Duke and Ohio State is to show the difference between one program who has signed every one-and-doner possible and a program that has not.
As I point out, there's very little difference.

Egg on face
Fri, 04/03/2009 - 13:01 — whitlow71JPG:
What happened here buddy, I understand your buddy and saint, 'Ol Roy gave wall a call last night. I think many readers WOULD love to hear your take on this, can we expect an unbiased article and a little self-humiliation from you, or are you just going to blow it all off and start over?
Desperate?
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 17:42 — jaydubbHardly. The facts are that Duke needs both a true point guard and a true post presence if they want to contend. Now Duke already has Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee coming in, both over 6'10" forwards - granted Kelly likes to play on the wing, but at least its some depth and size to help. So they have a scholarship left to offer, and obviously its going to be PG that they would go after.
Oh and just so happens the best recruit in the nation is still undecided and a true PG. And as scout.com says, Duke and Wall have had mutual interest for months. That's right MONTHS.
Now, if you found yourself in need of a PG - it's only smart to go after the best one you can get. It's not desperation, it's just good coaching. If Wall doesn't come, they'll go after the next top PG available in Eric Bledsoe.
Maybe it is a change in Duke recruiting ideology. Or maybe a return to Coach K actually going after the top recruits instead of the guys who are more likely to stay. I'd argue that it was only once the NBA age limit was instituted that we've seen a decline in the Duke recruiting classes. Sacrificing the best talent for guys McClure and Thomas who will never be nothing more than roleplayers.
I, for one, would welcome Wall to Duke even if its one and done. There used to be a saying that Duke reloaded, not rebuilt. A saying that hasn't really applied lately ever since the departure of JJ Redick and Shelden Williams. I think as long as Duke can keep recruiting the top recruits, the one and done's won't matter since they'll just reload the next year. In 2010, Duke is already recruiting top prospects PG Brandon Knight and SF Harrison Barnes while they've already landed the 5th ranked PF in 2010 and a five star SG.
I do wish I saw more interior players in Duke's future, as I don't see them winning a championship without a true inside presence like Carlos Boozer was in 2001. I'd like to see some more active recruiting of 2010's C Josh Smith.
Defensive
Thu, 04/02/2009 - 09:11 — heelsno1Wow, the Cameron Crazies have really become thin-skinned in recent years. It will be interesting to see if Plumlee or Kelly develop as players any better than Parks, Randolph or McRoberts did under Coach K.
This past season, Duke lacked quickness at the point and interior presence. I do not foresee Duke returning to its former self any time soon.
unqualified blogger
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 17:26 — collins64Who gave this clown a blog under the banner of this paper? It is obvious that you, along with many other bloggers, hate Duke and Coach K and so you take whatever opportunity you have to blast them, whether or not there are legitimate arguments to do so. "Desperate?" Let's see. Duke just set a record for most victories in a decade, won a championship in this decade, appeared in 2 Final Fours this decade, and I believe won 8 out of the last 10 ACC titles. That sure is a program lacking in recent success. If Henderson returns next year, Duke will be in the Final 4, with or without Wall. You then make the incredible statement of stating that Coach K never recruited a one and done player after Deng and Livingston, but admit that he immediately got the No. 1 national recruit thereafter, McRobers, who was going pro as soon as someone would take him. The only reason he stayed 2 years is that he was a bust and couldn't have gotten drafted by the Army after his freshman year. Instead of wasting space, why don't you just post "I hate Duke" once a week? At least that would be sincere. I'm sorry your SAT wasn't within 500 points of allowing you admission to Duke, but that is no excuse to publish this type of garbage. Go back to community college and shave the "soul patch," bozo.
I don't think you have to be
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 14:23 — twhittentonI don't think you have to be a member of Wall's posse to conclude that he has some off-court issues that make him, shall we say, an unusual fit for Duke. Why?
-He's widely regarded as the top PG prospect in the nation.
-He's right in Duke and UNC's backyard.
-Both Duke and UNC are likely to be unsettled at PG next year and have known this for some time.
-Despite all these facts, neither Duke nor UNC has recruited Wall until Duke briefly contacted him a few months back and then offered him last week.
If Wall were the type of kid Duke and Carolina normally recruit, why have both ignored him for so long?
Lawson
Fri, 04/17/2009 - 23:05 — ronaldetarheelBecasue you have to wait and see what Lawson is going to do. If Lawson stays then Roy really does not have to pursue a "one and done best point guard". He already has the best in the nation in Lawsom. If Lawson goes, Wall would be a village idiot not to go to Carolina. Better coaching for the next level, more exposure and playing for the most exposed team on television in the US.

K's Demise
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 13:01 — heelsno1Coach K talks as if Duke is the only major program to lose players to the NBA. Cry me a river! It is a sad reality that top programs will always be at risk to lose top players to the NBA.
Your article states that John Wall at the point may get Duke back into the Final Four next year. It ignores another glaring weakness in Duke's recent teams. No true interior presence. Coach K failed to do a stellar job with either Randolph or McRoberts, so a true post player may be reluctant to commit to Duke. I imagine that Randolph regrets his decision to become a Blue Devil and wishes now he had chosen NC State instead.
No doubt, Duke has lost the mystique and momentum from the early to mid-90's. Now, don't get me wrong, it is still fun beating them on a fairly routine basis. Four straight in Cameron and counting!

Missing the Larger Point
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 22:35 — MW005386I think everyone is missing the larger point that D1 college football and men's basketball has become so revenue driven that it shouldn't seriously be called college ball. The coaches make millions (see Ol'Roy, K, Calipari, and, etc...), the colleges are trying to generate every dime possible from TV, sponsors, and donors, and have totally sold their souls in the process. Fans just want to win, and seem to care less what shortcuts their school may take. Everyone is quick to point out the failings of other schools and don't take a serious look at how this whole thing has gotten out of hand. Half the kids playing D1 just want to get paid as soon as possible, and that includes both the athletes at Duke and UNC. To think otherwise is not in touch with reality. And who can blame them? Heck, over half the starters on UNC's team would not even be here this year if they would have gotten just a little more positive spin from the NBA GM's. The genie is out of the bottle and the college game as it once was will never be the same again. I think K and Roy are fine men doing the best they can to stay competitive in a very lousy environment. COLLEGE SHOULD BE FOR THOSE WHO SERIOUSLY WANT TO GET AN EDUCATION! The professional minor leagues are the appropriate place for those who wish to pursue a professional career without the worries of going to class. Let's stop the charades that are going on now and get serious about reforming this mess. Colleges are educational institutions, and should not be football & basketball factories.
Get Real
Fri, 04/17/2009 - 23:10 — ronaldetarheelGet REAL Pawpaw! Game changes along with the enviorment we're in. Either adjust to the changes or play checkers.
Bad premise
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 22:16 — bwmciverSo the assumption is that one-and-done players are required now to compete at the level at which the dookies are accustomed? If that is so, why do the heels start 2 seniors and 3 juniors. When will someone admit that they guy just can't get real talent interested in floor slapping and post game back massages.
UNC's Best Player is Ty Lawson
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 01:04 — devonmooreTy Lawson would have turned pro last year, except that he got injured just as the draft evaluations were happening. UNC would still be an excellent team without him, but not significantly better than Duke. Neither Frasor nor Drew is better than Scheyer. On the other hand, Ty Lawson is the best player in the ACC and probably the best point guard in the country. Duke sees that and realizes they would have an excellent team without Wall, but might be the favorite to win the national championship with him.
Dukes Decline
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 22:06 — devil67I have been a Duke fan for over 20 years. After watching Duke get picked apart this year by UNC 2x, Clemson and recently Nova I had to ask myself... Where is the talent? Sure they win their their fair share of games and maybe even some they shouldn't but people aren't afraid of them. Not one person on that roster with the exception of Elliot Williams has the potential to be a great defender and they simply don't value the basketball at all. Their help defense is the worst I've EVER seen. No true point guard and ZERO in the post. Just a bunch of wing players playing out of position waiting for favorable mismatches. What's in our future? Two more wing players coming this season. Great! I'm not sure if K is desperate or not but something needs to change. Landing John Wall could at least give them a year to really try and copy Nova.
Dukes Decline
Fri, 04/17/2009 - 23:15 — ronaldetarheelNow these comments are the truly the closest I've heard from any dookie understnding the problems over in Durham.
two more wing players coming
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 21:09 — mattgrahamtwo more wing players coming next season? are you a total moron? mason plumlee is a long, athletic 6'11 and is listed as the #2 center by ESPN. ryan kelly is 6'10 and a consensus five star power forward. you know nothing
Kelly & Plumlee
Fri, 04/17/2009 - 23:21 — ronaldetarheelI've seen both of these kids play. Yes both seem to be more skilled that Dooks current big man roster players. However, the competition they played against is so weak even Oboma could score 20+. When the likes of Booker from Clemson, Davis, Zellar, Henson whomever from UNC goes against these kids it's going to be as ugly as the Nova vs Dookie in the NCAA tournament.
whats in your future??
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 08:15 — gvillegatrThe Rat recruiting folks like John Wall to desperatley keep up with the heels and the like.
never should have taken the three yr commitment to run USA baskets. destroyed DUIke basketball. when I say "destroy" I mean you guys dont scare anybody anymore. just another team unless you are playing in the ACC with the refs.
touchy touchy
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 21:26 — fredwombleThis is better than watching American Idol. Dookies getting their panties in a wad claiming Coach K's recruitment of John Wall is not some sort of anomaly. This kid may be the greatest guard prospect in the history of the universe and that level of players IS typically on a program like Dook's radar. But people, as this blog notes, the kid went to three high schools in five years, was kicked off at least one team and it's no secret he has "handlers". Hey, his life, whatever makes it work. But if this same talented guy were on the scene in say the early 2000's when K had just hung his third banner and UNC was tripping over itself with the Gut-Doh years, NO WAY IN HELL would Mike Krzyzewski sniffed John Wall. To pretend otherwise is laughable. Heck, his handlers have stated in the press they don't want Wall to play for Coach K. Now he grovels to a 19-year-old anyway? Wow. Desperate is the best way to put it. So then the question becomes, is K going after Wall only a "keep up with UNC" move? If not, he's risking chemistry issues with his current backcourt players or is willing to throw a Nolan Smith, perhaps, overboard next year. He has said, correctly, Dook is just not as good as UNC right now. These two programs measure themselves against each other. Roy Williams is recruiting circles around him. Look at the past few years and compare the talent, it's laughable how overrated Dook's alleged talent is (unless, Dook fans, you think it's poor coaching). Long post, but this is pretty simple. The only reason Coach K is trying to land a rent-a-player is because he knows his program is years behind UNC. So the answer to the question: clearly, yes. K is desperate to "keep up" with UNC and is taking a huge gamble by offering John Wall. Open and shut.
Meanwhile, John Wall is exchanging cell #s with Ashley Judd.
Thanks

What is worse
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 22:16 — wog07John Wall going to 3 different High schools or
Ty Lawson drinking and driving and stealing a cellphone?
Glass houses shatter quickly. Keep acting like UNC is high and mighty.
drinking and drivng
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 08:12 — gvillegatris what your boy, JJ Reddick, did. Hes the one who blew over the .08.
Lawson barely blew anything and made the news only b/c he was under 21. and dont act like you have never put the keys in the ignition after you had had a few beers before, if not alot of beers. you are lieing otherwise.
never heard about a stolen cell phone. there was loud music one time ...
Yes Duke has always
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 18:56 — chrismg1Yes Duke has always recruited top 10 talent, but its one thing to recruit a top 10 guy who might or might not go pro in one year depending on his performance on the court (i.e. Deng, Wright, ect.) and quite another to go after a guy whose "handlers" (whatever that means) have publicly stated before Wall has even signed with a school that he only making a one year pit stop at whatever university he chooses. K knows UNC is quickly passing him by (and has been ever since the 2006 win in Cameron) and is taking a gamble on a player to try and make up some ground. If Wall does go to Duke (though I think he'll likely follow Calipari to UK) it will be interesting to see if K's roll of the dice pays off.
...and you have information
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 21:05 — whitlow71...and you have information that he's going to follow Cali, or just a hunch, or a hope...
Seizing an opportunity...
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 18:51 — jpichevaCalipari is headed to Kentucky - maybe John Wall will follow -- or maybe not. Maybe Coach K saw an opportunity coming and decided to take it? I'd call that savvy -- not desperate.
Do you, in fact know how
Tue, 03/31/2009 - 18:26 — whitlow71Do you, in fact know how long Duke has been recruiting Wall. Been a little more than a week.
Why is it desperate to go after the number one point guard, when you need a point guard. Livingston was the number one, was K desperate then?
Are you saying John Wall is a bad Kid? If so, grow a pair and say it!
Maybe a better slant on this would be that he is taking a gamble, but John Wall might be a great kid that happens to be great at basketball, but since you don't have any slant to you, I'm sure you already thought of that JP..... You just didn't include it....
Seems like you see it only one way, and you might be wrong... but... oh never mind
