ACC Now

Deep (football) thoughts

Bookmark and Share

Deep thoughts to ponder while you try to forget about the two winless teams in the ACC:

Georgia Tech @ Virginia, noon

Circled this game in July as a loss for Georgia Tech. The 3-4's a problem for the option and Virginia inexplicably has a Boise-like home-field advantage, minus the weird turf.

But Virginia running back Mikell Simpson is not healthy and without him, UVa won't score enough points to beat a hot, yet weary, GT team.

Pick: GT

Maryland @ Duke, 1:30

Duke should win this game, which gives you every reason to take Maryland, but the Terps have been awful against the pass and Duke has been exceptional throwing the ball.

Couple that mismatch with the extra week for Duke coach David Cutcliffe and the Devils should win a wild game, 42-38, in Durham.

Pick: Duke

Clemson @ Miami, 3:30

To say Clemson played their Super Bowl against Wake would be an understatement. The Tigers will need to bring the same type of effort against the Canes, who have been on a three-week hiatus from ACC play.

That's not going to happen.

Pick: This U

Boston College @ Notre Dame, 3:30

The Eagles have history (six straight) and the post-USC hangover working in their favor but they have been miserable away from home this season, getting outscored 53-0 in the first three quarters of lopsided losses to Clemson and Virginia Tech.

The number (7.5) is too high. ND wins but doesn't cover.

Pick: ND

MWC Bonus

TCU @ BYU, 7:30

Watching FSU in person, you really have to wonder what kind of "perfect storm" landed in Provo on Sept. 19 for the Noles to crush BYU, 54-28.

Logic, and Vegas, like the unbeaten Horned Frogs but I don't think the MWC will be as tidy as it was last year with just one unbeaten team (Utah).

Pick: BYU

Last week: 5-0 (for everyone who's convinced I never pick winners)

Deep Thought

I had a deep thought about the FSU game: 16 penalties and they won?!?!?!? Anyone have any idea the last time a team had that many penalties, compared to half that number by their opponents, and they still won? I think 13 may be the highest number called against one team that I can recall. Don't know who won, because I think it was 13-12 on the penalty count.
I just thought that was an interesting stat.......

Correction: You were 5-1 last week

JP-

Congratulations on being 5-1 with your predictions last week. Within the introduction of last week's "Deep Thoughts" article, you stated or implied that the article would pick the outcomes of six games. Therefore, you were not sufficiently deep with your thinking when picking only 5 games. Your resulting 5-1 record includes one forfeit due to your failure to provide the promised or implied sixth prediction.

Man, you're slow

Tudor and I picked six games last year. We called it "Pick Six."

I wrote last week, since you missed the "Pick Six" ...

Never promised six, just referring to last year's "contest."
