During his Sunday conference call, North Carolina coach Butch Davis was asked about a newspaper report out of Tennessee that stated he us the leading candidate to replace fired football coach Phillip Fulmer. The story in the Knoxville News Sentinel credited multiple unnamed sources as stating the Volunteers want Davis.
But is there any circumstance under which he would listen to Tennessee or take the job?
"I addressed that last week," Davis said, "and there's no further discussion about that."
When asked about the opening last week, Davis said: “The long and short of it is that the administration and I are completely, firmly committed to building a championship football program at North Carolina. And my family and I are very happy in Chapel Hill."
Last season, Davis' first at UNC, his name also often came up in speculation about the Arkansas opening. Instead, he was given a raise and a contract extension in Chapel Hill.

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 13:38 — cbsconsultUNC fans do not have to worry. Part of the reason Butch Davis wanted to come to UNC was the school system for his son. Now that he had a bout with cancer, Davis will stay in Chapel Hill ~ close to the doctors to whom he often fondly speaks.
The Vols won't get Davis ~ nor will anyone else so long as Davis son is in school.

If I was going to pick a place to work, raise my kids and possibly see them go to school, it would be at UNC/Chapel Hill. Davis has the chance to build a legacy here, something Coach Brown wasn't able to. Times have changed and the future is now. Give Coach the benefit of the doubt. If Arkansas couldn't lure him away, how in the world could Tennessee?

Mon, 11/10/2008 - 11:28 — Anonymous (not verified)Butch's language definitely leaves the door open to hear offers from Tennessee and other places for that matter. UNC's facilities are limited. There is too little room there to build a nice practice facility or really do much of anything. It's not clear UNC could ever be a consistent top 10 team, although clearly they could be consistently a bowl team. Butch said no to Cleveland repeatedly until Carmen Policy dangled $3mil in front of him. Davis is young enough and probably hungry enough to want to go where he can compete nationally, and Tennessee would be a good fit for him. So it would be wise for UNC to start looking for someone to fill Davis' shoes - just in case.

UNC made the best choice when hiring. Now his success, which we all wanted, may cause us to lose him. Until we commit to and become a premier program, this will always be our plight. I have my fingers crossed he will stay!!!!!
