Brandon Costner, N.C. State's leading scorer this season, will not return to the basketball team for the 2009-10 season, N.C. State announced Monday. Reserve guard Trevor Ferguson will also forego his final season of eligibility.
Costner, a fourth-year junior, will graduate in May and go through the NBA Draft process. The forward averaged 13.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in 30 starts this past season.
"... I just feel like it is time to move on and pursue my dreams of playing professionally," Costner said in a statement released by the school.
State will also free up another scholarship with Ferguson's decision. Ferguson, a reserve guard, will earn his degree in the summer and move on with life, according to a statement provided by N.C. State on its web site.
Ferguson, a junior who started his career at Pittsburgh in 2005, appeared in 19 games, with eight starts, and averaged 5.5 points per game.

Glad About Both, Too
Mon, 03/23/2009 - 17:59 — bobmacAmen to Brandon and his shoulder chip! A close call against him would get inside his head and take him off his game every time! Good luck in Europe Brandon. Hope you find the refs favorable to your game and attitude.
Trevor always gave his all. He could have started at many schools with more minor programs than State. He would have been a force at State if not for the injury in high school that took him out of basketball for such a long, crucial period of time in his development as a basketball player. Good luck, Trevor! We will miss you. Only wish your attitude was contagious. Brandon needed a big dose!
Good luck
Mon, 03/23/2009 - 17:44 — LKNpackfanThanks to both for the hard work. Good luck with your future endeavors
Glad about both, but for different reasons.
Mon, 03/23/2009 - 16:50 — JPDOhioCostner- good riddance. As much as State needs bigs next year, I can't get past the feeling that Costner was poison on this team. His presence next year would have just inhibited others from taking a positive leadership position on the team. And it's not like he performed like a McD's All-American (with some very infrequent exceptions). Good luck in Europe, Brandon.
Ferguson- good decision. I like Trevor, who I believe gave it all he had. It was clear however that he was going to be glued to the bench next year. He got his degree and can either get on with whatever career he has chosen or do graduate work at a smaller school where he can get one more year in. In any event, best of luck in your future endeavors, Trevor. I appreciate the effort and positive attitude you brought to the table. It will serve you well.
Not a good sign that NCSU is
Mon, 03/23/2009 - 16:46 — csgilliaNot a good sign that NCSU is losing 2 additional players this year and CJ Leslie has reopened his recruitment. Sidney Lowe better find a way to win games with waning talent if he wants to continue to coach for the Pack.
