Coach K helps the local press

Duke's the No. 2 team in the country. You may have read that on ACC Now but not the print edition.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski would like everyone to note that the Blue Devils are No. 2 in the coaches and AP polls in the first full week of January.
"I don't even think it was mentioned in the newspapers here, that we were No. 2 in the polls," Coach K said after Duke's 79-67 win over Davidson on Wednesday. "Fact, I know it wasn't mentioned, so I guess nobody really cares.
"It's interesting, always interesting to me in 29 years here, the subtleties of the local press is funny in some respects."
True, rankings are less important in college basketball, than college football, because the NCAA Tournament decides the national champion, not a human vote or a computer poll.
But Coach K, in his own passive-aggressive way, has a point about the impressive numbers of his tenure at Duke. According to the coach, in more than 950 games under him, Duke has been ranked in the top 10 in 72 percent of the games, ranked in the top 5 for 50 percent and the No. 1 team in the country in 20 percent.
Impressive, regardless of the value of the rankings.
"That's pretty good," K said. "I know it's not that big here, but it's pretty damn good. So when this group makes No. 2, it's a new group, they should be celebrated for doing something good.
"I'm sorry that doesn't happen very much. It's sad."
As you can see on the video, K wasn't really sad, rather expressing his displeasure in the coverage of Duke, vis-a-vis a certain school that was not named.
So for the record, Duke is No. 2 — one spot ahead of that other unnamed school.

It's about being humble and understanding your place in society. You haven't learned that yet. It's all about you. Even at Duke, it's all about you. You give lip service to football when you really don't want the attention diverted to Duke's best remaining source of additional revenue for the Athletics Department. Just get a life. Better yet, go home and get a hug. She does hug you, doesn't she? Maybe not. Or maybe, you prefer a hug from the media.

I'm proud of my team, Duke, because we were picked as low as 11th in one pole I saw. And as we continue to get better, only good things can happen for us, including beating that other team for the ACC Championship and/or winning it all. Either means a great year. Go Duke! Go Coach K !

The guy says all the right things most of the time but his ego is so outsized I'm surprised his head doesn't explode. And let's face it, the UNC program has lapped his over the last 5 years and now the occasional higher ranking is all he has to hang his hat on.
I don't think anybody really believes Duke will be the NCAA tourney threat that UNC is this season. So this is it.

He had a valid point to make and he made it in a well stated way using a light touch and some humor so he didn't badly wound the local media, who are mostly UNC homers. What makes this the right thing for him to say is that he's right.
