The Notre Dame players are coming. The gold helmets are coming. The ghosts of football lore are coming. Limping Charlie Weis is coming. Old Blood ‘n Guts Coach D — defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta — is coming.
But here’s the bummer, and it’s a big one. The Notre Dame marching band, the oldest in all the land, will not make the trip to North Carolina for Saturday’s game.
A Notre Dame game without the Notre Dame band just isn’t the way it’s supposed to go. But times are tight, and there are 380 members of the Irish band. That’s right — 380 folks.
“We’re probably only making one very long road trip this season, Southern Cal,” said Tina Durski, senior administrator of the band. “We’d love to go to Carolina, though. It’s just not going to happen, but it’d be a great trip.”
Here’s the part — the second stanza of the famous “Notre Dame Victory March” — that fans at the game will miss most:
“Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame
Wake up the echoes cheering her name
Send a volley cheer on high
Shake down the thunder from the sky!
What though the odds be great or small,
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching Onward to victory!”
That’s hard to beat if you really like college football and college bands. I’m a football band freak, and have been since the earliest years of my life.
Notre Dame has had a marching band since 1845, which was before I got into sports writing. That was before football in the most technical sense. Heck, it was before the Civil War, and the Model-T and before most of the world had even heard about Notre Dame.
In my opinion, the signature song and band almost go hand-in glove. The band can be great, but the song can be bad. But when you have the great band and the great song, you’re hitting for the cycle.
Here are my top-10 all-time in that regard:
1. Texas A&M, “Aggie War Hymn”
2. Notre Dame, “Notre Dame Victory March”
3. Michigan, “The Victors”
4. U.S. Military Academy, “Brave Ol’ Army Team”
5. Alabama, “Yea Alabama”
6. Georgia Tech, “Ramblin’ Wreck”
7. Ohio State, “Across the Field”
8. Southern California, “Fight on for Old SC”
9. Wisconsin, “On Wisconsin”
10. Tennessee, “Rocky Top”
Carolina’s band may be the best recognized from November through March, however.
But the classic basketball pep band standoff is on those rare Saturdays of the ACC Tournament, when you’re apt to hear “Tar Heel Born” from the Heels, or the “Red and White” from N.C. State, Duke’s “Devil in a Blue Dress”, Wake Forest’s “Sons of Wake Forest” but it’s really fun when that old “Tiger Rag” gets ripped out by the Clemson kids.
I know Choo Choo Justice would turn over in his grave and Bill Dooley might order me to drop and give him 50 push-ups on the spot, but I’d love to see the Carolina band come out Saturday in Kenan Stadium and reward Notre Dame with a big Southern “howdy” by playing that second stanza of the March.
What would it hurt? It would be a terrific gesture to the origins of the sport. And win or lose, what’s a Notre Dame game without a volley cheer on high?

Fri, 10/10/2008 - 11:38 — izzykareemyou ought to get negative points anytime you marching-band-ify a popular song. Didn't someone ever take composing lessons at these schools? I mean its cool if marching band plays the song but it doesn't vault it over old-skool composed songs for that particular school. Hands down the Notre Dame song is the best...the UNC-CH one is the most annoying.
At least the Aggies are #1 in something
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 09:47 — dukemomstatedad (not verified)I recently shipped my first born off to Texas A&M for his freshman year. An avid sports fan beyond measure, this poor child with an NCSU heritage never experienced the glory days of David Thompson & the Cardiac Pack. Now he's arrived at A&M at a time when its football program is being chewed up the rest of the Big 12. So I'm please to know that A&M can lay claim to #1 in something. Having witnessed the Fightin' Aggie Corps of Cadets' marching onto the field playing the "Aggie War Hymn", I have to agree with Carlton Tudor's ranking.

Fri, 10/10/2008 - 09:46 — Anonymous (not verified)I am from the South and (no offense) I am not crazy about Rocky Top. I would have thought that the Naval Academy's "Anchors Aweigh" would have made this list.
UNC Band
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 00:14 — bpguitarheelI'm sad that the ND band won't be joining us this Saturday. I was with the band two years ago when we went up to South Bend and it was an amazing trip. They're one heck of a marching band, and even played "Here Comes Carolina" during their pregame.
And about the ACC playing each others fight songs, they tried to implement that last year but it kinda fell through. We worked on the Miami fight song and now I can't remember if we played it when they came.
I would be more surprised if
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 23:43 — Anonymous (not verified)I would be more surprised if the Carolina band did NOT play the Victory March this weekend than if they did. When I was in the Marching Tar Heels from 1998-2002 we always played the visitor's fight song to their sideline during the pre-game show whether their band came or not. I also remember traveling to away games on band trips and having them play ours to us. I've got music for all of our home opponents' fight songs collecting dust in a closet somewhere. The only reason why they wouldn't would be due to ABC. Networks dictate the length/timing of events up until kick-off and the visiting fight song can be the first thing to get cut. Certainly you can't cut the National Anthem, our fight song, the alma mater, team running out, etc.
That's a very good point.
Fri, 10/10/2008 - 08:28 — UNCAlumnusIt seems that at some points I've seen the UNC marching band turn to the visitors and play their song. I believe last year vs. Miami this happened. I think it is a classy move.

Thu, 10/09/2008 - 21:23 — UNCAlumnusI hit the bathroom before the rush. Get my grub and drink. Go back to my seat. Then I take a big chug a lug. Next.....I top the soda back off with what's in the flask I brought in my back pocket (I bring one in each). I love the music, man. I even had a fight song as my ring tone for a little while.
I love college marching band music, too
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 12:31 — UNCAlumnusI just happen to be more a fan of the southern universities, esp. the SEC. Southern Cal's is top notch, also. Alas, as I am an absolute homer...UNC's melodies ring near my heart.
The Big East Football
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 12:29 — JoshC (not verified)The Big East Football Conference used to require the home band to play a stanza of the visitors' alma mater or fight song before each game if the visitors didn't bring a band. I found the rule to be inconsistently followed at best, but it was a neat idea, and wouldn't be a bad one for the ACC to adopt.
