Bullock, Barnes best Wolfpack trio in summer league

Bookmark and Share

DURHAM — If you did not kick North Carolina's basketball team while it was down last year, forget about another chance this year.

That's how good Harrison Barnes and Reggie Bullock are, or make that Reggie Bullock and Harrison Barnes, at least on Tuesday night at the SJG Greater NC Pro-Am at N.C. Central.

The UNC freshmen duo was spectacular, combining for 55 points in an 82-72 win over a team featuring N.C. State's ballyhooed freshmen in an electric atmosphere at McLendon-McDougald Gym.

It was March in July for one summer night. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of fans were turned away from the old gym, all hoping for a glimpse of the future.

If you were one of the 3,000-plus to get into the building, you saw Team Stackhouse, featuring Barnes, Bullock and UNC forward John Henson, against Team McGladrey, which started N.C. State's Ryan Harrow, Lorenzo Brown, C.J. Williams, C.J. Leslie and Tracy Smith.

None of the freshmen, on either side, disappointed but Bullock, who pumped in 30 points, stole the show.

The book on Bullock, a 6-6 wing from Kinston, is that he can shoot, sort of a newer version of Wayne Ellington, the shooting guard on UNC's 2009 national title team.

Based on Tuesday's performance, Bullock's got more game than that, more like a senior-year Danny Green than just a spot-up shooter like Ellington. He can handle the ball and create his own shot off the dribble.

Both Bullock and Barnes, who's supposed to be the top recruit in the country (his light was stolen by classmates Bullock and Duke's Kyrie Irving, whose team played before the main event), showed an aggressiveness in taking the ball to the basket which is exactly what UNC was missing in a disastrous 5-11 NIT season.

Now, one summer league game with little defense and zero offensive structure does not a Final Four make, but the raw talent of both Bullock and Barnes, who added 25 points, is conspicuous.

Considering the stage, a packed, molten-hot gym, with fans of both sides — and plenty of trash talk by players and patrons alike — and it's easy to get a player's best effort.

The pitfalls for UNC, which will also get significant numbers from Henson and returning forward Tyler Zeller, will be when Barnes and Bullock have an off shooting night.

State's trio of five-star recruits, led by Leslie's 21 points, looked the part of their press clippings. They definitely won the layup line.

Harrow, with his middle-school frame, wowed everyone in the building with his NBA hops. As the dunking exhibition in warmups showed, the reports of the maybe 6-foot guard's vertical leap (near 40 inches) have not been exaggerated.

Brown, who finished with 15 points, was locked in a playground battle with Bullock. He showed a polish and versatility to his game that should elevate N.C. State, also 5-11 in 2010, in the ACC standings.

Both sides knew the sweaty gym was filled to see them and they obliged by taking turns going one-on-one and trading jumpers. That wasn't conducive to Smith's low-post game, the Pack's leading scorer last year, and he was often relegated to background music.

The season won't go that way for the Pack, obviously, because coach Sidney Lowe will still go inside-out, even with an upgrade at all three perimeter positions.

And if there was any doubt about Leslie's position, he's a "3." The difference in size, and really skill set, between Barnes and Leslie is negligible, although Leslie has more bounce to his game.

It's dangerous to make too much out of one game, let alone one in July, but you can't help but conclude that this basketball season has potential to be special for all sides of the Triangle.

Be careful

Roy has to be biting his fingernails down to the quick.  C'mon, these guys are not even IN school yet and already they are being hailed as the second coming of Michael.  One of the things Dean did so well was keep egos in check.  This was part of the problem last year, The Egos That Ate Chapel Hill; well, The Dean Dome anyway.  These guys are high school kids, being idolized way beyond their time.  How Roy deals with bringing these kids back down to earth is going to be interesting.  But don't get caught up in the idolatry that permeates these summer leagues.  The ACC is full of big and quick guys that these kids have not seen yet.  Their talent and maturity will be tested, not in the pre-season in November and December, but in the first conference game.

Be afraid; be very afraid.  Much too much is being made of these recruits and we better not drink the Kool-Aid too quickly.

You might want to come to one of the games

These guys aren't running their mouths to the media (with an exception of Bullock's comments in the early spring).  There is no indication that they've got big egos.  All they've done so far is perform on the court.  And I'm not sure what you mean by how they're about to face talent they haven't seen yet.  3 current Heels outscored P.J. Tucker, who averaged 16.1 ppg and 9.5 rpg his final year at Texas.

I understand and agree with you when you say that no fans in Carolina blue should get too excited.  At the same time, no one is expecting a national title this year.  No one is even expecting an ACC title.  And while these games are indeed very different from what a normal ACC game will be like, there are many things you can take away from these summer league games as far as getting an idea of what each player has to offer.  By what we've seen so far, Barnes, Bullock, Irving, Leslie and Brown all have a lot to offer.

Just the fact that they can

Just the fact that they can shoot the ball gives the Heels a big boost going into the season. I tend to agree that not a lot should be made out of these games but what I am happy to see is some hustle and intensity. Something that was sorely lacking in last years team. These guys want to play right away and its going to push the competition level at practices to a place this team hasn't experienced yet. I am really looking forward to it.

Carolina Family

Agree, but you've got to love the fact that Barnes and Bullock avoided media interviews, citing UNC and Coach Williams' mandate that freshmen will not conduct interviews until after the first game.

Regarding last year, I am not so sure about the ego reference. I attribute the majority of difficulty to injuries and perhaps a slight drop in talent.

Hoping against all odds

That we get to see Barnes and Leslie go at it for at least three years in the ACC.

Barnes

Is definitely a one year player.  Hard to tell with Leslie.

Business degree

Barnes said one of the reasons he chose Carolina was because he could graduate from the business program in just 3 years.  It's unlikely he'll be a one-and-done.

In addition

Agree, but even more than that, Barnes seems like the kind of guy (he may have even said as much) that wants to accomplish something on the court at UNC, besides just playing well enough after one year to go to the NBA. Time will tell I guess.

Labor trouble

This all assumes that there will not be a lockout or strike that affects the start of the season in 2011. Depending on the status of negotiations next spring and summer, some college players may choose to stay an extra year until things get settled.

Summer league

Looks like the Heels are well-positioned to win the World Championship of Pickup Basketball.  Congratulations!

Hilarious, and well-put.

Hilarious, and well-put.  Good observation!

yup

ncsu can't even win that!

newcomers

Watched some highlights of the Pack players in last night's game. Although you can't compare a summer league to the rigors and pressure of an ACC game, you do get a look at the skills these guys bring to the table. They are considerable.

I am trying to stay grounded about State's prospects this season, because these guys are young and you never know. Plus we have all been disappointed before. Often. But it is hard not to get excited when you see them in action. Should be a very competitive year.

Lorenzo Brown

is going to be really really good this year.  He may not have scored the team high, but he had no trouble hitting that 3 ball.

Lo Brown

He has a very nice, smooth, soft shot. Although Harrow and Leslie have been getting most of the press lately, this kid make his mark early and often. If he can hit those long range shots during the season, one can only imagine what that will open up for guys like Smith, Howell and Wood.

not getting giddy yet

we still have a football season to be played ... But thx for the blog.  Basketball season will be here soon enough.

I'm with you gville, what is

I'm with you gville, what is it like 3 or 4 weeks before fall drills start?  Lets here about how the Tar Holes could possibly beat the Bayou Bengals in the Georgia Dome. Or who will be the Packs starting running back(s) and how TOB plans on improving that young secondary.  When is the ACC Football Media Days?

Football?  What's football?

Football?  What's football?

fOOTBALL?

That's what TJ Yates tosses to guys wearing a different color jersey when he isn't playing with a frisbee.

I get visions of Abe Vigoda every time I think about him.

Re: TJ and the other QBs

You are correct, during practice and drills (jersey color), but let's hope during the real games they will be able to hit the guys on their own team. I have heard that TJ loves a snickers bar, though.

*FOOTBALL* season!!??

*FOOTBALL* season!!??  Child, you're not from around here, are you?  ;-)
