Bowles email: UNC being cautious, thorough

UNC officials have decided to "err on the side of caution," according to an e-mail sent by UNC system president Erskine Bowles, when deciding which football players would not play Saturday night against LSU.

Twelve Tar Heel players are being withheld from the game, and three others did not make the trip to Atlanta pending further review. In an e-mail to UNC system Board of Governors members today, Bowles explained that a number of players will not play even though they may be subsequently cleared by the school's investigative group or the Honor Council.

Bowles wrote that UNC chancellor Holden Thorp, athletic director Dick Baddour and coach Butch Davis are working with the investigative team to get all the facts.

"I can assure you that Chancellor Thorp is doing everything humanly possible to get to the bottom of this matter," Bowles wrote. "All of us who love Chapel Hill and are proud of the enormous good it does are greatly saddened by what we have discovered."

Bowles wrote that university officials will continue investigating and taking appropriate action until they get to the bottom of the matter and do everything possible to make sure it never happens again.

Bowles was born with a

Bowles was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He has never, ever held a real job. A career bureaucrat!

"I can assure you..."

When Bowles says, "I can assure you...," I can assure you we are not hearing the whole truth.

The Real Precedent

The real precedent being set here is the historic level of academic malfeasance going on at UNC Chapel Hill.

/thread

i would only add that their is also a precdent being set for the new low in crisis and perception management that this has brought to light.

koodos

Even though it is tough, koodos to UNC for doing the right thing. Of course it is not enough for the ABC'ers, haters, etc... they are having their day today. I will not be "officially" disappointed until the facts are revealed, and then I will decide how bad it is. Until then, just expect an uphill battle.

Day?

I fully expect to be reminding you of this 20 years from now.

Right

Agree, but I actually think that sometime between now and then NCSU will give you something to cheer about? Of course it could be another 27 years as well. Oops, sorry, I forgot about the 41-10 hat hook, that keeps you going as well.

(note: if  my comments seem rude and out of place, please ignore. I am not the happiest of campers today for some reason)

You're allowed

We all have days like that. Some more than others.

having their day?

Try 6-7 weeks, with no end in sight.  And the fact that you guys can (understandably) rationalize all this and somehow make your pathetic athletic department look like a hero in all of this; you have no idea how much funnier it is.  Human beings can truly justify anything.

justify

for sure.  for some ungodly reason, ncsu fans continue to pump money into a fledgling athletic dept.  truly amazing and, yes, wonders never cease!

Funny

Oh, we know funny. As far as looking on the bright side, I am the most optimistic person I know. I am not rationalizing or justifying any wrong doing, I am just making the best of a bad situation. Enjoy.

the sky isn't falling

no matter how bad the Heels beat LSU are how bad they get whooped.

this game has no bearing on Charlotte in December and subsequently has no bearing on Miami in January.

UNC is certainly setting a precedent here by not allowing student athletes to play even though (it appears) some may get cleared.

UNC-CH (as a whole) = still doing the right thing even in the worse of situations.  it will be OK.  book it.

they are setting a precedent

they are setting a precedent alright. it is the first time we have seen such issues arise in NC D1 football programs. this will be a permanent scar on the university.
