Bob McAdoo's nephew commits to UNC

While celebrating the 2009 NCAA championship over the holiday weekend, North Carolina secured a commitment from a player who could keep the Tar Heels in contention for future titles.

James McAdoo, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound junior forward from Norfolk (Va.) Christian School with a strong basketball tradition and a tie to North Carolina in his family, has committed to the Tar Heels. Scout.com ranks McAdoo as the No. 2 player in his class.

McAdoo's uncle, Bob McAdoo, was a second-team Associated Press All-American at North Carolina in 1971-72, when he averaged 19.5 points and 10.1 rebounds and led the Tar Heels to the Final Four. James' parents, Ronnie and Janet McAdoo, played basketball at Old Dominion.

James' sister, Kelsey, is a junior who plays for the Charlotte 49ers. Ronnie McAdoo, who's originally from Mebane, said North Carolina, Duke and Virginia were the final schools James considered.

"James likes the up-and-down pace, the way Coach (Roy) Williams plays," Ronnie said.

McAdoo averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds last season. Ronnie McAdoo, who's an assistant coach at Norfolk Christian, said his son has improved his strength and ability to finish around the basket. Ronnie said ball handling and perimeter shooting are the elements of the game James needs to continue improving.

Although James would prefer to play small forward on the college level, Ronnie said his versatility could allow him to play multiple positions.

"Coach Williams told him, 'You will not play point guard, and you won't play center,' " Ronnie said, predicting that his son will play mostly small forward and power forward.

McAdoo is North Carolina's second commitment in the Class of 2011, joining 6-5 shooting guard P.J. Hairston of Dudley High in Greensboro.
