Bilas: Debate issues, not school affiliation

Jay Bilas will do color commentary for ESPN tonight on a Duke game for the second time in five days when the No. 3-ranked Blue Devils visit Georgia Tech at 7 p.m.

Bilas, a former Duke player, lives in Charlotte and has coached for the Blue Devils under Mike Krzyzewski. He has occasionally been the target of ire on Duke-oriented Internet message boards for criticizing the Blue Devils (or praising rival North Carolina) on the air.

He said he is aware that he has been a target and doesn’t mind it as long as his critics have a point.

“What I want to hear is if I say something, and somebody says they disagree with it and here’s why, make an argument as to why,” Bilas said.

Bilas doesn’t have much patience for fans who discount whatever he says just because he went to Duke.

“Tell me what I said you disagree with and why, and then we’ll discuss that,” he said. “But if we’re just going to have, ‘You went to school here therefore you’re disqualified from having an opinion on this,’ you can’t to get anywhere with that argument.”

biased announcers

add stuart scott to the mix of good acc grads. I have to disagree on one who was mentioned, however, and that is Len Elmore. He doesn't exude bias.......just incompetence. How he graduated law school amazes me. Perhaps he should be practicing law, instead of showing his ignorance!!

Bilas is one of the best

I always look forward to the games where Jay Bilas is in the booth. He is very even-handed in his criticisms and praise and I've never heard him put his school allegiance above his professional integrity. All this coming from a Tar Heel.

A Losing Battle, Jay

You're fighting a losing battle Jay. Complaining about the reality of today's sports fans is akin to the stand-up comic complaining that most of his audience is drunk and more interested in heckling than hearing his routines ..... DUH! In the new age of the anonymous Internet fan the bottom-feeding halfwit rules. .......

Jay does an outstanding job as does Hubert Davis (UNC) as does Terry Gannon (NCSU) and Len Elmore (MD) and Dan Bonner (UVa). Heck, I even kinda liked Billy Packer (WFU). .......

Sports fandom is now driven by conspiracy nuts who see partisan bias within every syllable. Alas, Coach K's rant last week didn't help quell the epidemic of insanity.
