CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Scott Wood put his name in the ACC record book on Sunday and lifted N.C. State into a first-place tie in the ACC standings in the process.
After the Wolfpack's 78-73 win over Miami, a group of about two dozen State fans, mostly his family members, waited behind the team bench to congratulate him.
As the group cheered as he ran off the court, Wood tried to bury his chin in his shoulder to shrug off the attention and as if to say "Ah, that was nothing."
But Wood's game-high 21 points helped the visiting Wolfpack (15-5) improve to 4-1 in the conference, the same first-place record as Duke and Florida State.
And Wood made all seven of his free throws, giving him 58 straight, to eclipse the old record of 54, held by former Duke great J.J. Redick.
"Any time you pass J.J. Redick in the record book, it's awesome," Wood said.
It was Wood's dagger of a 3-pointer in transition, a shot Redick would appreciate, with 2:21 left that iced the win for the Wolfpack. Miami (10-7, 1-3 ACC), which had trailed by as many as 16, cut State's lead to five points before Wood's fourth and final 3 of the game.
"We needed that one," said State senior C.J. Williams, who played despite a sore shoulder. "That was a big one. We struggled for a stretch but we were able to get it back together thanks to Scott."
The way N.C. State took control of the game near the end of the first half, it didn't seem like Wood's heroics would be necessary. State forced more Miami turnovers (nine) in the first half than the Hurricanes had made field goals (seven).
Williams hit consecutive 3s to cap an 18-5 run and put the Pack up 38-22 at 1:22 in the first half. The Canes spent the rest of the game playing catch-up. With 20 points and 11 rebounds from forward Kenny Kadji and nine points and five assists from guard Shane Larkin — all in the second half — Miami almost got there.
"We got sloppy again," Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried said. "I thought we were a little tired and we were in some foul trouble, so defensively we got tentative. Then we were loose with the ball."
Forwards C.J. Leslie, 11 points in 25 minutes, and Richard Howell, seven points in 18 minutes, spent most of the game in foul trouble. DeShawn Painter picked them both up with 18 points off the bench, including 11 in the first half when State started the first 10 minutes of the game in a malaise.
Miami got back into the game in the second half with Larkin's defense (three steals) and Kadji's persistence. Kadji's three-point play, after a dunk off of an assist from Larkin, made it 65-60 with 4:26 left.
The teams traded baskets then Larkin's runner at 2:29 made it 69-64. Lorenzo Brown (six assists) broke Miami's press and quickly found Wood alone on the right wing.
"Zo just did a good job in kicking it to me," Wood said. "I was wide open."
It was a similar scenario which led to Wood's record-breaking free-throw attempts. He was fouled on a 3-point attempt by Durand Scott with 5:21 left in the game. After a video review, to confirm it was a 3-point attempt, he stepped to the line and made the first to tie Redick and then the second to pass him.
After the game, Wood was more interested in the Wolfpack's team success than his own. His first two State teams finished 5-11 in the ACC. He likes the view from 4-1, and first place, a lot better.
"We're starting to play well at the right time," Wood said. "Hopefully we can continue to get better."

Perimeter defense?
Mon, 01/23/2012 - 13:38 — SurferWatched most of this one. State's perimeter D seemed much better (extended) in the second half than the first.
Good win
Sun, 01/22/2012 - 20:09 — JPDOhioAny win on the road in the ACC is a good win. However, I don't like the fact that State got sloppy in the 2nd half and let Miami back into it. The Pack lost its focus for the second game in a row. Do that in the next two games and they lose.
The good:
1. CJ Williams was healthy enough to play and contribute. Hit 2 huge 3's in the first half.
2. Scott Wood really delivered in the second half when the Pack needed someone to step up. From behind the arc and at the free throw line, he was money. Congrats also to Scott for setting the new record for consecutive free throws. And he did it in a pressure packed situation, with the game on the line. Calm and cool.
3. DeShawn Painter played perhaps the best game of his collegiate career on a day that Richard Howell struggled. CJ Williams probably is the most improved player on the team, DeShawn is a close second. Excellent performance today.
Here's hoping that the Pack handles this success better, starting with scaling back the showboating. Most of their turnovers were created by poor decisions and goofy moves. Unnecessary guys. Plus, I can't help but wonder how spectacular Calvin would be if he stayed focused an entire game, kept his mouth shut and just played.
Despite how all this sounds, I'm really happy with the Pack and where they stand at this point in the season. How can you not be? Big one coming up on Thursday. Another test and another challenge to play solid D.
I agree
Mon, 01/23/2012 - 13:02 — shharrisAny road win is a good win. What I liked was that the Pack was never flustered. They looked poised and confident (when have we EVER said that in the past 35 years?) even though they seemd to hit only 2 of thier first ten or twelve shots and even though Miami made a strong run at the end. I really agree about the sloppy turnovers. It seems like Lo gets a couple every game, and I think he is the most improved player, but that is a really hard choice based on how much better everyone is playing.
A concern I have is Richard Howell's tendency to get a couple of silly fouls, out near or even beyond the arc, early in every damn game. He really needs to break that habit. On the other hand, Painter seemed back to his early season form.
I have given Calvin a lot of grief. His technical was not a "RH I said the magic word" technical. He continued to argue a call after the ref warned him. Despite the lack of maturity, he played hard almost all game.
Congratulations to Wood. I questioned his defensive abilities before the season, but he has greatly improved under the new coaching staff. But to say it again, everyone has.
After being afraid to be happy or optimistic for too long to remember, I say, let's enjoy this while we can. Big test Thursday. Go Pack! steve'73
Most improved player?
Mon, 01/23/2012 - 13:56 — JPDOhioProbably a question with no right or wrong answer. There has been so much improvement across the board that it is scary.
My biggest worry is that the Pack will get too comfortable with their success. I see little bits of it evey now and then with careless passes, silly fouls and lax defense. Fortunately, this is happening a lot less this year than at any time during the Sid years.
What gives me comfort is that Gottfried seems to address problems immediately. Yesterday, I saw him get right in Howell's face during a timeout that followed an incident in which Richard looked like he was about to lose his composure and go after one of the Hurricanes. If the Pack can keep their heads and continue to play smart and hard, especially on the defensive end, there is no reason they can't finish in the top four in the conference.
Top
Mon, 01/23/2012 - 14:19 — SurferTop four maybe, but def. see them in the top 6. In a way they are a verteran team to much of the ACC. The key is whether they can beat UNC, Dook, UVA, or FSU.
4-1
Sun, 01/22/2012 - 15:29 — mad_maxThis is just unreal. Who would have thought that in late January, State would be tied for first in the league and getting ready for a showdown in Chapel Hill. I've been very impressed with what this coaching staff has been getting out of these players. We certainly aren't the best team out there right now, but if we keep on working and improving, this team could not only make it to the tourney, but actually win a couple games too. Very excited about what this Wolfpack team can do. Can't wait until Thursday.
Oh, and it was great to see CJ Williams play, and play well. Was worried about him after last game. GO PACK!!!
I agree
Mon, 01/23/2012 - 13:17 — gvillegatrWith the state of the ACC, ncsu very well could win a couple of ACC Tourney games.
Lol
Mon, 01/23/2012 - 18:00 — mad_maxI see what you did there...
Nice win and yes, It is encouraging
Sun, 01/22/2012 - 18:07 — Shoreman67Max, to be right at the top in the conference standings at this point but I will be more encouraged about this season if we can play well against the Heels and beat Va. at home; I believe that we need a "marquee"win to help our tourney chances; beating Va. or Carolina would give us that.
I hope that we can maintain our defensive intensity and avoid injuries; I know that we can score, but it's the peremiter defense over the last few games that has gotten us to 4-1. I'm hoping that VaTech will beat Va. today and give us a little breathing room in the conference.
hokies prevail
Mon, 01/23/2012 - 13:06 — shharrisyour wish came true. The real test is Thursday. But it will always be whatever the next game is. Ok it IS the heels, so what more can we say. "Dadgum" Roy and Ferret Face have set the bar high for the rest of the ACC. steve'73
