Wolfpack turns to versatile juco transfer at center

Quinton Schooley played tackle in junior college and was a middle linebacker in high school. On Saturday, the 6-4, 285-pound sophomore will start at center for N.C. State.

Schooley has made a quick transition in positions and from Butler Community College in Kansas to N.C. State. Joe Thuney, the starter at center in the spring before Schooley enrolled, struggled with the consistency of the shotgun snaps in State's up-tempo offense. Schooley's development allows Thuney to move over to right guard for Saturday's opener against Louisiana Tech.

N.C. State's depth chart for Louisiana Tech

As promised, N.C. State coach Dave Doeren did not reveal the starting quarterback for the season-opener against Louisiana Tech on Monday.

There is an "or" listed between Pete Thomas and Brandon Mitchell on the depth chart for Saturday's opener released by Doeren on Monday. Doeren has said he will not publicly disclose the starter before Saturday's kickoff. Doeren said Monday he would probably make the decision on Wednesday and give Thomas and Mitchell the news then.

There were plenty of new names but few surprises on the depth chart released on Monday.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier: I’m a Dukie and games against UNC are special

After their 41-0 victory against North Carolina in 1989, Duke coach Steve Spurrier and the Blue Devils posed for a picture in front of the scoreboard at Kenan Stadium. DUKE SPORTS INFORMATION

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier on Sunday gave his pre-North Carolina game press conference. And, as you’d expect, Spurrier was asked what games against the Tar Heels mean to him. After all, you’d figure they’d mean something extra given he spent three seasons coaching at Duke.

And they do. Here’s a fun read from Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer about how Spurrier still enjoys games against UNC.

And the highlights, from Spurrier:

Shirreffs switches to fullback

Freshman Bryant Shirreffs has had a busy training camp. He came in as a quarterback, briefly moved to linebacker and is now filling in at fullback.

With starter Logan Winkles out for the season with a knee injury, State coach Dave Doeren said the move makes sense for Shirreffs, one of the strongest players in the freshmen class.

Pack defensive tackle transfers to ECU

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle K'Hadree Hooker has transferred from N.C. State to East Carolina. Hooker, who's from Kinston, wanted a chance to play, Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said Friday.

"He was just buried in the depth chart and he felt like he was going to struggle getting on the field," Doeren said. "He's a great kid and we love him but he just came in and said he really wants to play."

Thornton receives deferred prosecution in assault case

N.C. State running back Shadrach Thornton received a deferred prosecution in Wake County court on Thursday for the assault on a female charge which led to his arrest in June.

If Thornton, the Wolfpack's leading rusher a year ago, meets the conditions of the court's agreement by next August, the charges will be dismissed and he will not have a criminal record.

Wolfpack freshman guard suffers minor setback

N.C. State freshman guard Cat Barber suffered a minor foot injury on Wednesday in a pickup game at the team's practice facility.

Barber, who was a McDonald's All-American at Hampton (Va.) High School last season, had his left foot evaluated and x-rayed on Wednesday. The x-rays were clean but Barber is wearing a walking boot as a precaution.

Barber posted a picture of himself wearing the walking boot on Twitter on Wednesday.

A top 25 vote for the Canes, Heels

The AP top 25 was released today.

This is my ninth season as a voter. Here's my top 10 from earlier in the week.

I have two ACC teams in the bottom 15 — Miami (20) and UNC (23). Neither ACC team made the proper AP poll. The only two ACC teams in the AP top 25 are Clemson (8) and Florida State (11).

Smith, Payton held out of second scrimmage

Veteran receivers Rashard Smith and Quintin Payton were held out of Friday's scrimmage at Carter-Finley Stadium as a precaution.

"Rashard is just beat up and we kind of know what he is and I don't need to put him out there and get him hurt," Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said.

Smith, a senior, caught five touchdowns last season and was the Pack's best receiver in spring practice. He is expected to have an expanded role in Doeren's version of the spread offense.

Crimson Tide, SEC rule preseason poll

My ninth year as an AP voter is here and I've finally succumbed to popular opinion. Alabama, with three titles in four years, is No. 1 until proven otherwise.

The full top 25, both mine and the proper AP board, comes out on Saturday. Six of the top 14 spots go to teams from the SEC, including the top 3. There are four ACC teams in my top 25, including one from this state.

You'll have to wait until Saturday for the full list. Here's my top 10:
