BCS strikes again (plus ACC update)

Believe it or not, one of the intentions of the BCS is to avoid controversy.

Yes, they're doing an excellent job.

The BCS was designed to pit No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the championship game. That's it.

The other four games are in place to sell tickets and television ad revenue, not give us (college football fans), the best possible matchups.

That means, while we (college football fans) would love to see Texas play the SEC runner-up in the Sugar Bowl, it's not going to happen.

But since we (AP voters) might put Texas No. 1 over the BCS championship game winner, that Sugar Bowl scenario must never happen.

See, the Harris and Coaches are contractually obligated to vote for the BCS winner No. 1. Nevermind if Oklahoma and Texas are the last two teams standing and Texas beat Oklahoma straight up on a neutral site.

So, we're heading for Texas-Utah in the Fiesta Bowl and the SEC runner-up against Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, or flip Utah with OSU.

The conferences are "anchors" and when an anchor team gets chosen for the BCS title game, the anchorless bowl gets first choice.

Without the Big 12 champ, Oklahoma assuming it beats Mizzou, the Fiesta Bowl takes Texas.

Without the SEC champ, the Sugar takes the runner-up.

See no controversy, at least not at No. 1.

Instead, it's Ohio State in another post-New Year's bowl against an SEC team it can't beat. Hurray for the BCS!

And at this point, it looks like Ohio State and not Boise State. ESPN is brokering a deal with the ACC and Mid-American Conference to get Ball State to the Humanitarian Bowl.

ESPN, which televises the Humanitarian Bowl and Motor City Bowl — where Ball State, the MAC champion, would normally play — is reporting that they are  going to set up the only bowl matchup of unbeaten teams — Boise State (12-0) and Ball State, which still has to beat Buffalo in the MAC title game to get to 13-0.

Part of that deal would guarantee the at-large spot in the Motor City (vacated by the Big Ten with Ohio State's inclusion in the BCS) to the ACC.

Either Wake Forest or Maryland would be displaced from Boise by the ESPN move. Both could be in the at-large pool — with guaranteed spots because of their 7-5 record — because the Emerald Bowl is expected to choose Miami, based on historical name-brand value for TV purposes, which potentially leaves the EagleBank Bowl in Washington in a lurch.

Maryland told the EagleBank it cannot play in the inaugural game because of a conflict with the university's exam schedule.

Navy, which is committed to the EagleBank, doesn't want a rematch with Wake Forest and claims it has a contract with the bowl that prevents such.

Since the NCAA won't let N.C. State play in Washington, either Wake Forest or Maryland might have to bite the bullet.

What we know in the ACC:

Orange: Va. Tech/BC winner
Chick-fil-A: Georgia Tech
Gator: Clemson
Orlando: Florida State
Charlotte: UNC
Nashville: Va. Tech/BC loser
San Francisco: Miami
Boise: Undecided
Washington: Undecided

That leaves Wake Forest (7-5), Maryland (7-5) and N.C. State (6-6) looking for spots in the Motor City, PapaJohns, Independence, Texas or potentially GMAC (Jan. 6 in Mobile, Ala.), which the Mid-American could open up as a part of the deal with ESPN for the Boise slot.

WHO CARES....

The BCS isled by a bunch of corrupt RETARDS..and they all should be taken to Guantanamo without parole....

Aside from the obvious travesty of no playoffs.......

They still screw up a wet dream by creating all these incestuous conference connected match ups.....thus a month of meaningless/UNWATCHABLE Toilet Bowl games.....

But the BCS games should be decided by a panel of national sports media.....

Instead of at least WATCHABLE games like:

1. SEC #1 vs Big 12 #1
2. SEC #2 vs BIG 12 #2
3. So Cal vs Penn ST
4. Ohio St vs Texas Tech
5. Utah vs an undeserving auto bid ACC or Big East
6. Boise vs an undeserving auto bid ACC or Big East
7. or hell, how 'bout Utah vs Boise......

1-2-3-4-7 ...i'd even watch......

But NOOOOOOOO..........The Country gets yet another BCS Brainfaxx...and more UNWATCHABLE CRAP.......as is outlined in this article....

The rest of the teams ...like a Maryland ...Navy...who cares?
No December Toilet Bowls on my HIDEF.....

Terps and Boise

Washington Post's Terrapins Insider blog reports that the MAC commissioner says Boise State-Ball State won't be happening, and suggests that this will send the Terps to Boise.

No Pack?

I must have missed something. Why won't the NCAA let NCSU play in DC?

That would solve the "problem" and, while I am not normally a fan of 6-6 teams playing in bowl games (where a loss gives them a sub-.500 record), in this case it would reward a strong ending to the season, as opposed to schools "backing in" to a low-rung bowl berth by losing 4 of 5 to end the season.

That would be the NCAA...

making a rule to solve a problem that doesn't exist. I believe that the federal tax code makes more sense than the NCAA rule book. Just take a look at some of the rules and regs posted on its web site. They are, mostly, unintelligible.

This is all ...

... way too confusing.

Controversy

I don't know if the BCS wants to avoid controversy, but I am sure the networks televising the games love it. The more controversy, the more press and the more fans talk about it. As crazy as all this Bowl stuff is now, look at all the interest it is generating in this blog.

This is a guilty pleasure for all of us. We say we don't like it, but we really do. You like it too, JP. Admit it. ;-)

Maryland

Come on JP. You honestly want MD to play Navy in that bowl when several dozen players have exams the day of the game? Yes, MD has exams on a Saturday. You know that won't fly.

A couple other points- Navy has a clause with the bowl that prohibits rematches, which is why Wake can't go there.

Also- the only way Boise State plays in the Humanitarian Bowl is if Ball State is the opponent. If Ball State doesn't go, Boise St. will go to San Diego to play TCU in the Poinsetta Bowl and MD/Wake would play Nevada most likely.

It has nothing to do with MD/Wake wanting no part of Boise St.

Do you have a link confirming that Ball State has agreed to go to the game in Boise?

no play and certainly doesnt want to lose

why doesnt someone (news paper man) say Maryland simply doesnt want to play/get beat by Navy. It is that simple. Like they (the school) cares whether these "student" athletes take exams. we all know their tudors take 90% of them anyways.

Tudor?

Not surprising that a person who doesn't know the difference between 'tudor' and 'tutor' would make such malicious and ignorant claims. Who took your exams for you? Henry VIII? (He was a Tudor king... get it?)

 People who can't write, shouldn't.

super!

maybe they should take away my high school and college degrees b/c I messed up the spelling of tutors.  i'll go talk to my employer as well!  loser.

dude, do not waste anyones (and especially yours) time with spelling and grammatical errors in here or you will be spending your late hours replying to them.

and for the record, yes, tuTors do take exams for student athletes.  you're a fool if you think they do not.  every year some tuTor makes the headlines b/c they did so.

I've tutored for State's

I've tutored for State's football team before. I've never taken a test, nor been asked or approached about taking a test, for any athlete.

 Carry on.

Tudors

Wow, I didn't know Caulton's family was that busy. Do the players get refunds if the Tudors fail their exams?

Apparently...

Caulton doesn't get paid enough by the N&O, so his family has to moonlight.

Maryland

I don't know their intentions and it's certainly convenient to hide behind the student-athlete cloak but they told DC months ago they weren't coming.

I don't think Navy's that good. I do know Maryland or Wake want no part of Boise in Boise. That's why you're seeing the Ball State move.

Where that leaves Md and Wake, I don't honestly know.
