Boston College AD Gene DeFilippo appears ready to fire football coach Jeff Jagodzinski and promote Frank Spaziani, according to the Boston Globe.
DeFilippo told the Globe on Monday afternoon that it's not that Jagodzinski wanted to talk to the New York Jets about their opening at head coach, it's that he lied to DeFilippo about the scheduled meeting between the second-year BC coach and the Jets on Monday.
Jagodzinski replaced Tom O'Brien, who left BC for N.C. State after the 2006 season. When DeFilippo hired Jags, he said he thought he hired a coach for the long haul. Jags has led the Eagles to the Atlantic Division title in his only two seasons at Chestnut Hill. He took over for O'Brien after working in the NFL, most recently with the Green Bay Packers.
Jags' background with the Packers, and connection to current Jets quarterback Brett Favre, seems to be at least a part of the attraction with the Jets, who fired Eric Mangini after the Jets' collapsed in the second half of the NFL season and missed the playoffs.
Spaziani, the Eagles' defensive coordinator for 12 years, was a finalist for the BC job when Jagodzinski was hired. The coach affectionately known as "Spaz," gave the Eagles continuity in the transition from O'Brien, who parted on sour terms with DeFilippo, to Jagodzinski.
