Basketball notes: Is Duke ACC's best?

Bookmark and Share

NEW YORK - Following No. 3-ranked Duke’s humbling, 93-78 loss to St. John’s on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, reporters understandably were quick to pounce on the significance of the win for the ACC and the Big East.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was asked what it meant when a middle-tier Big East team defeated the best team in the ACC.

“We’re not necessarily the best team in the ACC,” Krzyzewski replied.

Is Duke the best team in the ACC? Here are some thoughts on a weekend that was big for North Carolina and Harrison Barnes, Clemson and St. John’s (at Duke’s expense):

1. Duke’s flaw exposed. The Blue Devils didn’t look like the best team in any conference Sunday, but they must be considered the ACC’s best until some other team proves otherwise.

Duke is 6-1 in the ACC, one game in the win column ahead of North Carolina in a conference with an unbalanced schedule. In Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler, Duke has a pair of senior leaders the equal of whom no other team in the conference possesses, and that counts for a lot.

But St. John’s did expose a weakness on Duke’s part. Although the Blue Devils’ big guys are improving, Duke’s backcourt without Kyrie Irving lacks an abundance of quick, confident, experienced players.

Point guard Smith is obviously one of the best in the nation, but sophomores Seth Curry and Andre Dawkins and freshman Tyler Thornton need to develop quickly for Duke to get where it wants to be in March.

2. Barnes, UNC emerging. Barnes, the sometimes-maligned freshman forward who came to North Carolina with huge expectations, is beginning to live up to the hype.

Last week Barnes made two key baskets to give North Carolina a win over Miami, and then dominated N.C. State with 25 points on 10-for-16 from the field in an 85-65 win at the Smith Center.

If Duke is not the best team in the ACC, the Tar Heels probably are at this point. Tyler Zeller and John Henson give North Carolina two strong scorers and rebounders in the low post.

“They’re very long,” an admiring N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe said last week, before the Tar Heels outrebounded the Wolfpack 53-39.

Zeller and Henson are difficult for opposing big men to shoot over in the low post. If Barnes can continue to play better than he did early in the season, the Tar Heels have a chance to win the ACC in the regular season.

The team still is inexperienced enough to pull a real clunker, as it did earlier this month in a 78-58 loss at Georgia Tech. But as Duke demonstrated Sunday, every team in this league is capable of a clunker.

3. N.C. State can forget about the NCAA tournament.

The Wolfpack (12-9, 2-5 ACC) has played 21 games and doesn’t have a single win that would impress the Division I men’s basketball committee on Selection Sunday.

N.C. State’s poor nonconference results and the relative weakness of the ACC meant that the Wolfpack would have to go 10-6 or at least 9-7 in conference play to have a serious shot at the NCAA tournament.

With games still remaining against Duke and North Carolina, that doesn’t appear likely even though N.C. State’s second-half ACC schedule is a bit easier than the schedule for the first half.

4. Brad Brownell was a good hire for Clemson.

After Oliver Purnell left for DePaul, athletic director Terry Don Phillips, who’s not the most popular guy in Clemson right now, hired Brownell from Wright State.

It wasn’t the sexiest hire. But soon after Brownell got the job, word started getting around from coaches who had faced him when he was at UNC Wilmington that Brownell was an excellent X’s and O’s coach.

Those coaches were right, it seems. Brownell last week knocked off N.C. State and Florida State with a roster that consisted of a couple solid seniors (Demontez Stitt and Jerai Grant), an underachieving McDonald’s All-American (Milton Jennings) and a bunch of spare parts when the new coach arrived.

Jennings has improved immensely under Brownell, and Stitt, Grant and guard Andre Young are playing to their strengths. And role players such as Bryan Narcisse are making huge contributions.

Now Clemson is 15-6 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. It remains to be seen whether Brownell can recruit at the ACC level, but he sure can handle the game management in this conference.

Dook

Agree, at this point Dook has the best team, esp. w/ K. Irving, but TOB called and said that UNC has the best "program".

Duke is by far the best team

Duke is by far the best team in the league, but other teams are improving and capable of beating the Devils.

Weslorocks ( aka: Bluecat69 ) is just spewing his 10 year old rant. Next thing you know he will be spouting off that he is a medical student at Duke.

Sorry

I don't know who bluecat 69 is. I did used to post under a different name: Tbaby1, and no, I'm not a Duke med student either. Is it that hard to believe that there are more than two carolina haters out there? I'm pretty sure that mamba and dexter morgan are the same person though. The best comment from that stream that I inspired was from the guy that said I just like to get tarhole fans worked up--yes, yes I do. I love to see the frenzy of crapel hole fans rushing to the defense of their sorry team. Like I said, see you guys on February 9th. Until then have fun indulging in your delusions of grandeur, and I'll have fun calling you out.

Sincerely,

The National Champions

I remember Tbaby1. I don't

I remember Tbaby1. I don't believe any of us Tar Heel fans have delusions of grandeur. And I don't remember seeing any posts to that effect within the past year. However I do know that Carolina is a lot better than they were last year and improving with each game. Duke will probably win in Cameron but its not a given......

Its your use of language ( or lack thereof ) that is similar to BC. I know that you have been posting on here long enough to know who BC is.

I found it interesting that BC sorta disappears when your posting and vice versa. But in general I could give a good flying F.....

Yes

Not even the casual observer would forget BC bc of his usage of the English language.

Ha

HaVe not heard much from him this year. I guess who ever was doubling as him got tired of it.

Ostracism always works. We

Ostracism always works. We have to stay committed.

hahaha!

Are you freaking serious?! Duke looses one game and all of a sudden crapolina is the best team in the league? That has to be the most ridiculous commentary yet this season. Before, I was looking forward to the Duke -stinkalina game because I love seeing those red headed step children beaten savagely on the court--now I have the added pleasure of seeing a crappy team (that has won games against even crappier opponents) face a good opponent for the first time all season and have their hopes and dreams shattered on national t.v.  After the beat-down on Feb 9th, maybe the tarhole fans will realize their place in the CBB world--behind Duke!

Same ol' spew

All weslo"sucks" can do is spew his "Hate"orade about Carolina.  Although I do agree with his comments that Duke is still clearly the best team in the conference (for now) and will probably beat UNC at Duke (homecourt means a lot in the ACC), you guys have to know his main objective is to get Heels fans upset - but, good news for him, he's really good at that! :)

Johnny Mac

".......and will probably beat UNC at Duke"

"YOU Can Not Be Serious".....

Tar holes have as much chance of beating DOOK on the road... as NCSU had...to win in the Whine & Cheese Dome.......ZERO & NONE !!!!!

Delusion, blind faith and denial will get you and them.....NO where!

"Had  Dook not scored a single point in the 2nd half...they STILL would have  beat Williams and his Mickey D's by 3 points"

Next 4 games , boys and girls....GET prepared to re-live 2010.....

Speaking of "spew"

No Mumbo, YOU cannot be serious. When in the world of sports has anything ever been a given or impossible?  Do YOU remember the NFL playoffs from, I think it was 1993?  The Houston Oilers were up around 35-3 on the Buffalo Bills - I remember the announcer saying the lights had been on all day, but you could cut them out on the Bills.  Remember the result?  Bills won and went to the SB.  Yes, that is a football example on a college BB page, but YOU get my point I hope?  Maybe YOU should look up the definition of "probably" in a dictionary.  YOU call me "delusion(al), blind faith, and (in) denial" - when I say that Duke will probably win?  Pathetic.  Kind of like YOUR "mass exodus" prediction from last year - which, btw, it's a good thing YOU weren't around in the Biblical days or the children of Israel would still be in Egypt - YOU have a chance of being wrong.  I still say Duke will probably win at home, but in the world of sports, not even YOU know everything!  Have a wonderful day "snake-boy", I know I will!

Nice

Great post. Top 10 worthy on the young year. I loved the children of Israel would still be in Egypt line.

As of tonights beatdown on

As of tonights beatdown on BC

UNC 1  MUMBO  0

Whine and cheese dome

What was it ? Assinine lame comment. I believe that was it. Bring it. Don't sing it, son.

If HC means so much in the ACC

Why did the DUIke administration change the basketball arena name to Handbrough Indoor Stadium at Danny Green Court !?

Haha

Well, I like to refer to it as "Hansbrough Indoor Stadium" and I loved the photoshop job I saw where someone had a picture of K-ville and posted a "For Sale By Owner - T. Hansbrough" sign on it.  That was classic - but, homecourt advantage means a lot, espeically for Duke.  They are almost unstoppable at "HIS", like it or not.

Sorry Guys

the naming rights to the Durham Duncan Dome were locked up back in '97.

pathetic

you make some assinine lame comment ....and you can't even SPELL the name right...pathetic!

Ha

I'm guilty for hitting the D instead of the S which is side by side. No one knows what your excuse is. Ratzo. Chapel Hole. I guess you are the only one who can come up with crafty words around here. I'm sure tour mommy has put you to bed. You got a geography test tomorrow I am sure. Let's hope it is on Orange County since you apparently know where that is. Don't leave your lunch money on the kitchen counter ...

Edit

Edit

Spelling Nazi

"your" or "tour" ... Another casuality of "side by side." Take me to court.

At the beginning of the season, UNC wasn't going no where according to you and now with every win you continue with the same tired rhetoric.

But on the bright side, you actually responded to a post which means you must have passed the 1st grade ... able to have a conversation. Congrats on your advancement !!

LOL, Is Mamba showing signs

LOL, Is Mamba showing signs of becoming socialized????

Turning the corner

I think so, but it was only one word !

Someone like him knows if he doesn't respond to someone commenting negatively on his post, he can't technically be any proven any worse for the wear. Kindergarten material.

I guess Texas wasn't a good

I guess Texas wasn't a good team...or Illinois or Kentucky...

St. John's was a bottom tier Big East team and they killed dook...the author of this column really complimented St. John's by calling them middle tier..

Same goes for FSU... not really a tourney team but they beat dook as well. If the ACC is so bad, then why does dook lose at all? Can't wait to hear this...

Dook

hasn't  beaten jackxxxx on the road yet........held serve at home...the rest is a TBD......Ratzo needs to figure out and  light this team up because there is no other March Madness contender coming out of the AWAFUL ACC......

UNC has beaten more top 25

UNC has beaten more top 25 teams than Dook at this point in the season. Beating MSU and KState really aren't that much to brag about since they couldn't beat anyone anymore...sounds like you should go do some research before coming back up here and spouting off like you did.

Dook's weakness are ALWAYS exposed as soon as they leave Hansbrough Indoor Stadium. The bigs cannot do anything except illegal screens, foul and occasionally get a garbage dunk. Clamp down on the guards and Dook is a average team.. As the rest of the league gets better, all those minutes Sunglare and Smith play are starting to show...this team will wear down.. Such a letdown is only fitting for all you idiot fans that thought this team was invincible early this year.

IRRELEVANT

A 2nd irrelevant season in Chapel Hole with Williams and his Mickey D's ..merely a hoops  afterthought outside of Orange Co....Lucky for them,  the ACC is woeful and unless Dook gets it's xxxx together outside of Ratzo Arena....the entire conference will join Roy  in his 2 season fall from the Penthouse....

We're all waiting for the next 4 games........pretender or contender for ACC runner up?

@BC

Fla St

@Dook

@Clemson

Has anybody else noticed

Has anybody else noticed that Mumbo and Dexta Mo have suspiciously similar posts?

I'm curious Mr. Brian Clifton, think back a few weeks ago; what record did you, Mumbo, and Dexta Mo predict for the Tar Heels after six league games? Was it 5 and 1? Yeah, didn't think so.

NO early predicts

ACC is too AWFUL to predict unless it involves Wake Forest- the worst of the worst......

even Roy and the Mickey D's  have beaten all but 1 of  the teams that  7 Mickey D's SHOULD BEAT  easy....BUT....they were mostly ugly struggles to the end,  except vs the WOEFUL Roadkill Wolfpack.

...but now  it is  2 weeks of reality check time.....Can't wait for the next 4 games.....

Pretenders with a bunch of Fools Gold wins or Contenders for ACC runner up.....?????

Would have to agree with one point

d00k is still the odds on favorite in the ACC this year, but Minnesota, Texas, Kentucky, Illinois, and the rest of the college basketball world would probably take exception with your "good opponent" comment. Perhaps you know better than everyone else though...

Definition refresher

I don't know what circles you run in, but the term "red headed step-child" does not fit UNC basketball in any respect.

notes

Ignore the RatFace ratspeak.

permission requested

I want to edit mine to say what you said.

notes

1. Ignore the Coach K coachspeak. Duke is still the best team in the ACC.

2. See me in two weeks and then we can talk.

3. You're kidding!

4. The early returns are good and I don't think it is a mirage. Hopefully, State's athletic department is watching and getting the message.
