Bad news for ECU

Bookmark and Share

News of Urban Meyer's six-year contract, worth a tidy $24 million, should reverberate in Greenville.

Despite his protestations to the contrary, Meyer has been rumored to be leaving Florida for Notre Dame, his "dream job," since winning his first national title with the Gators in '06. This gargantuan contract should end any plausible notion that Meyer's going anywhere any time soon (right?).

Notre Dame, on the other hand, is still a mediocre season away from sending Charlie Weis back to the Belichick Conservatory for Overhyped Underlings.

Hmm, now where could Notre Dame possibly look for its next coach? Maybe someone who went there? Maybe someone who was on the same staff as Meyer? Maybe someone whose dad was the coach there?

I know, ECU fan, I know, Skip *hearts* Greenville and is never leaving (and no one should have the audacity to even bring up the subject) but Meyer's official unofficial rejection of the Golden Dome qualifies as a bad thing for the Pirates.

How many times do I have to repeat that it's okay to talk trash? I'm simply saying that their arguments for Butch not being a good coach and those that are guaranteeing victory don't make sense. I say that they're the little cousin because it's pathetic how they can only beat us when we're down. So please tell me what is wrong with that statement.

round and round part two

we're not even discussing the same stuff anymore (mostly).

Butch is a goood coach and the majority of any fan base would say so.  don't take what one person says and make that the gospel.

we've done discussed trash talk.

If ECU is the step child or little cousin or whatever to UNC, then whenever ECU beats UNC, they ought to be given the credit and should be allowed to spray it on your dorm wall if they so choose.

and it is not pathetic for fans to get excited over beating a team (UNC) that most (UNC fans) think don't even exsist.

You are an intelligent writer and can put things together very well.  but you are not doing such a good job on this particular topic.

i'm still waiting on an answer from my post before this one.  you can't have it both ways.

Like watching a fight on the back of the short bus...

Coaching ability

TOB>SH>=BD

Recruiting ability

BD>TOB>=SH

Where >= means "greater than or equal to" for all of you ECU grads.

Yes

This coming from the guy who predicts that UNC will go 6-6 and that NC State's decent D-line will make up for one of the worst secondaries in the nation.

Its a prediction...

Dont take it so personally.  I just see UNC taking a step back this year and a big step forward the next.  You guys are so whiny.  Like a bunch of little girls.  Lets hear your prediction for UNC.  And we do have a decent D-line and a good-to-great LB corps.  The D should not be on the field as much as last year and our schemes are much more forgiving on a weak secondary than the ones we ran under Amato.  I see a slight improvement on last years D overall.  Plus, JP is right, there are very few big play receivers or QB's in the league.

Prediction

I see the Heels winning 8 to 9 regular season games.  I see 6 games that could be possible losses, so I say we lose 50%.  That leaves 9 wins.  8 if injuries come into play and 7 if the worst should happen.  I believe FSU, VT and State are the 3 that will beat us, assuming each team is healthy (which obviously will probably not be the case).

Tar Heels' Chances

Not all Tar Heel fans are whiners...just as not all State fans are realists.  Wilson emerged as a star QB, but do not overlook Riley Skinner at Wake Forest.  He is a savvy, proven winner and the Wolfpack plays Wake in Winston-Salem on Oct. 4.  That will be a big game in that division.

I like TOB's style (reminds me of Dick Sheridan) and BD is a huge upgrade for UNC.  If UNC can beat Georgia Tech on the road early, that could set the stage for a strong season.  I am hopeful that the Heels will win 8 or 9 games in 2009.  Toughest match-ups, in order:  Va Tech (away in Nov); Ga Tech (away in late Sept); FSU (home in mid-Oct); NC State (season finale in Raleigh) and ECU (home in mid-Sept).

short bus?

when it comes to football, ECU and UNC have both had more bowl victories than ncsu in the last 15 years.

yes, short bus

That was a comment in regards to your moronic conversation with heels20.

Bowl wins in last 15...

NCSU - 5

UNC - 5

ECU - 3

Try again.

oh well

I was hoping that one would stick.  But I wasn't sure.  so be it.  I guess ncsu made the most of the Phillip Rivers era.

anyone else notice that

anyone else notice that gvillegatr consistently post comments with inaccurate statements, but then never responds when he's called out on it?

HA!

I can't play on the internet all day.  I do have to go out and work from time to time!

so forgive me, for leaving the house today!

furthermore, show me a post where i was wrong and I did not respond to it.

Re: round and round part two

I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to argue.  I've said numerous times that there is nothing wrong with ECU fans trash talking.  Do you want me to congratulate ECU on it's win 2 years ago?  Sure, congratulations, you beat a 4-win Carolina team.  What I'm saying is that I don't understand how a win like that has any emphasis on a game this year against a very very much improved Tar Heel team.

Can ECU fans get excited?  Absolutely.  This should be one of your best years in school history.  But don't go around promising a victory over UNC when it will be a much more level playing field this time around.

So you might have to specify what I'm supposed to argue at this point.  I'm not really sure what kind of answer you're looking for.

beyond frustration

just forget it.

i've made my point clear 2 or 3 times already.  I bet anybody else on this board could tell you exactly what i want from you.

a little hint: IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TRASH TALKING.

you are CHOOSING not to comprehend this correctly.

I'm pretty sure I made it

I'm pretty sure I made it clear that ECU is the little cousin that can talk trash when they win.  If that's not what you were asking me, then someone else please translate for him.

Butch turned down his alma

Butch turned down his alma mater, Arkansas, after his first year with UNC and he turned down Tennessee last year. He wouldn't take the job at ND where the fans are tougher on you and the team is less talented. The only way I see him leaving is if Pete Carroll decides to try the NFL thing again and USC comes calling. Forget all this though, I'm going to play some MMORPG game while waiting for the next game.

BUYOUT CLAUSE

I just read over at theWizofodds.com that Urban's buyout clause IS ONLY $500,000. peanuts to just about any Div 1-A school.

YAY! Boston!

Do you think there is any way they would be interested in another Catholic coach in NC that used to coach in Boston? Or is his record too low since he left there?

Catholic coach?

Notre Dame would take an atheist if he could lead them back to a semblance of where they think they should be.

Actually

ESPN just did a mock draft of the top 40 FBS football programs, historically speaking.  BC was on the list, but no team from NC was included.

did they do one for most

did they do one for most historic stadiums? and if so, was kenan on the list? lol jk heels

It will be what it will be

No point in worrying about it. ECU would love for him to stay - but most realistic fans know he will be gone one day. Maybe at the end of this year - maybe in another 2, 3, 4, whatever. We will survive. That is what we do.

yes You r a ACC homer !!!

JP why u not face the truth? you took over for your other ACC homers , one who has been banished to sports outhouse, the ice hockey coverage.(Chip Alexander) At least ECU has a coach that someone wants, not old Tom Terrific who is making his final coaching stop or Butch who really isnt that good. But hey JP keep up the good words

Yes

Because TOB, the winningest coach in BC history, is clearly inferior to Skip Holtz, as well as Butch Davis who led a team to an 11-1 record and a Sugar Bowl victory...

Football coach

Interesting that a ACC homer would spend time worrying about the ECU football coach. I don't think that you have talked to many real ECU fans if you think that most believe that Skip Holtz wouldn't leave for a job at one of the real football powers. I'm sure he would/will but the up side is that it also means that there is only one or two jobs in the ACC that he would even consider so we're safe there. And it should be noted that if one of those powers came calling, the likes of Tom O'Brien or Butchie Davis would be gone in a New York minute. ECU isn't the only one who has a coach that would like to coach at a football power.

Do your research

Butch turned down his alma mater, Arkansas, after his first year with UNC and he turned down Tennessee last year.  He wouldn't take the job at ND where the fans are tougher on you and the team is less talented.  The only way I see him leaving is if Pete Carroll decides to try the NFL thing again and USC comes calling.

TOB won't go back to Navy.  He won't leave State any time in the near future, and the only way he would do that would be if he felt pressure from fans upset with 8 and 9-win seasons, but nothing more.  That would still even require a big opportunity.  I think he'll stay put as well.

State would have to have

State would have to have some 8 and 9 win seasons first!

i fully agree

i fully agree

Arkansas and Navy

Perhaps you need to read my post again. Arkansas and Navy are hardly national football powers. Even ND is not right now and hasn't been for a while.  There are only about 10 teams that qualify year in and year out.  Butchie will stay at UNC@CH until one comes calling because they expect so little from their football coaches and pay them so much.  BTW, what is Butchie's head coaching record against ECU?

ECU

beat Butch in a year where Miami went to the Micronpc.com bowl, and a 4-8 year for Carolina when they were re-building.  That would be like Toledo saying their coach is better than Rich Rodriguez because they beat a 3-win Michigan football team.  It's actually really pitiful that you back up your argument by bringing up a game from 11 years ago (when Skip wasn't even at ECU) and a game where Carolina had nothing.  But hey, you're an ECU fan.  I can't expect anything more.

Check again

It's not 0 and 2 but rather 0 and 3.

It has as much to do anything as his 11-1 record you mentioned  earlier. And Butchie is such a classy coach for classy fans. He is a perfect match for UNC@CH. BTW, the 11-1 team you mentioned, was that the team where: "Davis had brought the team together in a New Orleans
hotel and assured the players that he was staying. "If I leave now,
that makes me a deadbeat dad, because this is my family," he told them.
"I want to finish my career right here at Miami."  And then a few days later said "We're going to work our asses off in the off-season, harder than we've
worked before. This is going to be an incredible season. We're going to
win the national championship."  And then after that:  "In the funereal silence of the locker room on that Monday morning Davis began to speak at 11:20. The early start was no surprise to his players: In Davis's disciplined world everything began 10 minutes early. Dressed in a business suit, his eyes red from lack of sleep, Davis
began by telling the players how much he loved them, how they could win
a national championship. He seemed nervous. "I couldn't tell where he
was going with this talk," says McKinnie. He and other players remember only snippets of what Davis said next: "Opportunity at the next level.... Cleveland Browns.... Best thing for my family...." Then the coach started to cry.

"Hardest thing I've done," Davis
would tell SI three days later. "A college coach spends so much time
with his players. I looked around that room, and for every kid I could
see his family. I could see a home that I sat in. I get choked up
talking about it." When he finished addressing his players, Davis
asked if any of them wanted to speak. None did. None rose to embrace
the coach or shake his hand. "Jaws dropping, eyes bugging out," is the
way McKinnie recalls the scene. "Total shock." Davis walked toward the door, where Shockey, who had arrived late, was standing. "He looked at me and gave me a little nod, and I nodded back," says Shockey. "Then he just bowed his head, and he was gone." In his absence the players met alone, many of them rising in anger at Davis. "People were real mad," said McKinnie. "Especially the young guys who have three, four years left. He told us he would be here."

All of that is from an SI article entitled

Butch League

Butch Davis left Miami scrambling when he betrayed his players and bolted for a big-money deal with the Browns

I'm not sure what point

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make...I'm not arguing that he wouldn't leave if he saw an offer he couldn't refuse (a ton of money from a top program or an NFL team).  I simply brought up that he turned down jobs at Tennessee and Arkansas (again, his alma mater).  I even said I could see him going to a top program like USC if Pete Carroll were to go back to the NFL.

As far as Butch vs Holtz goes, you can take pride in beating a 4-win Tar Heel team all you want.  It's actually pretty sad, but ECU does kind of take everyone's scraps.  You take the left-over recruits, the left-over students, the left-over rivals (no one at State even considers you their rival).  I'm not going to run my mouth and guarantee victory this year, I think it will be a good game.  I suggest you do the same.  Then again, what would an ECU fan be if not someone who talked their team up many steps above what it is?

We take pride in beating

We take pride in beating anyone, no matter what the record is, because a Win is a Win.  And as far as taking scraps and everyone’s left over recruits, Skip takes those the left overs and gets more out of them than any other coach in the state would, and has consistently had better seasons and beaten better teams with those left overs.

Beaten better teams?

By what I recall, UNC won 8 games last year while playing in the ACC and ECU won 7 while playing in C-USA.  I don't know what your logic is when you say they've had better seasons and beaten better teams.

tsk, tsk, tsk

ECU won 9 games, not 7.

they also beat VT and WVa which (you knew that before you posted what you did), unfortunatley, UNC lost to both.  I wish UNC had not lsot to them but they did.

Good call

I lost my mind for a second and thought they had only 12 regular season games with 5 C-USA wins.  My fault on that one.

Heels 20

yes, the poster was way off base up above and it read before he cut and paste kinda the article like the "go duke!!!!!!!" guy.

But ECU doesn't need to be talked up.  ECU is a fine football team who will give everyone hell this season except for one or two games they always play down to.  who that is remains to be seen.  last year it was ncsu and UVa.

gville

That's why I gave credit where it was due.  I said it would be a good game and made no guarantees.  But you've got to recognize a pattern here.  Last year, they beat a VT team that hadn't found its identity and a WVU team where their best player was the zebra (they most likely would have won any way) and started talking about BCS.  A week later, they blew multiple opportunities and lost to NC State.  Not long after, they were blown out by Houston.

This summer at the super regional in Chapel Hill, ECU fans were out there buying tickets from scalpers for over $80 bucks.  They went out of there way to talk trash in the stands before the game even started.  What happened?  They got blown out both days.

I have a lot of respect for Skip Holtz and even more respect for the fact that he's stuck around.  But while ECU has a very good football team, I don't understand why they act like they're national champions just because they beat a 4-win Carolina team.

2 points

is ECU the first fan base ever to talk a little smack??  it wouldn't be much fun if a fan base didn't talk a little smack.

and regardless of your thoughts about ECU beating VT and WVa (which were in hindsight, BTW), to talk about a potential BCS birth was extremely realistic.  Heck, the college football world was saying the same thing.

You're right

ECU fans never have inflated hopes, and it was very realistic to think they would win 10 straight to make a BCS birth.

I'm not even saying that ECU is a bad team.  Not even saying you can't talk trash.  I'm just saying they talk way more trash than they can back up.

I thought you were a Carolina fan.  It'd be nice to see you step up and defend the Heels a little instead of taking everything I say out of context.

I am a UNC fan

always have been.  but I went to ECU.  not everyone in this great world we live in is as book smart as you.  thats about that.

But you look at ECU as your step daddy's son he brought into your mothers family so to speak.  you'll never give em the respect no matter what hill they climb or oceans they swim.  your previous posts reveal that crystal clear.

thus everything is magnified.  for example ECU fans coming to Steinbrenner Field and paying $80 for a ticket and talking a little smack.  it is a best of three playoff for a birth to Omaha.  of course the other fan is going to come in and make some noise.

Its not like UNC fans or any other fan of a college team doesn't do the same thing.  In 2005, there was quite a bit of sh*t talking by us UNC fans when we rolled into C-F and beat the pups.  We'll do it again this year as well but it will be louder this time!!

You're not getting my point

There's nothing wrong with talking trash.  There is something wrong with the ECU fans I've seen in previous blogs guaranteeing victory.  There is something wrong with the ECU fan earlier who said Butch is "not even that good of a coach."  What has ECU proven in football?  That they can beat a 4-win UNC team?  That they can beat a 3-9 NC State team?

The fact of the matter is, ECU is the little cousin.  This year, they happen to have a great football team.  However, that's not how things have gone in the past.  Although they should be the favorites for the C-USA title again this year and they will play a good game against Carolina, they still have yet to show the consistency necessary in football OR basketball to brag about a "superior" program.

If ECU wins at Kenan this year, they have the right to run their mouths about how they have the better program.  They'll even have the right to throw a few shots at Butch.  But until they show they can consistently beat Carolina in any sport when Carolina isn't simply at rock bottom or re-building, their arguments aren't worth anything.

round and round

you're not getting my point although you state it by realizing you admit ECU is the little cousin (close enough to what I said) to UNC.  so your bias on anything ECU is shining like a beacon on a dark night.

if ECU is the little cousin, then it should not matter when or how they beat UNC.  the way you talk, the "battle field" is level when UNC is at their worse.  so an ECU victory at that time should deem a little smack talk and is admissible.

you can't have it both ways, Heels20 (last paragraph).  in your next post let me know how you want to play this and that will be that.

if ECU is the little cousin, they should be allowed to talk whenever they beat UNC b/c it will always be an upset (little cousin) according to you.  or ECU is considered an equal and a victory against a UNC team that is rebuilding is not allowed to be talked smacked upon.

just let me know ...

Gotten too narrow

See the top

A first!

I've never been called an ACC homer before. There's a "search" option on the home page if you need help figuring out how wrong you are on that front, Hatchski.

Skip

I had the opportunity to meet Jerry Faust earlier this summer and asked him about Skip and ND. He felt the time wasn't right, and although Skip played and coached at ND, he would not be considered.

we just don't need ...

a second Holtz (Skip) looking up at the Golden Dome, when his time is done in South Bend, and crying and saying hes glad he left it untarnished or something to that effect (which was lie, Lou Holtz!)

doubtful

I mean his father did leave ND on some sort of a probation.

I think you are fishing on an iced pond in Wisconsin with this one.

Admittedly, Skip probably wants this job (ND) more than ND wants him to have it.

Agreed

Notre Dame would consider Skip as too low-profiled.  He'd have to be a last resort.  The only way I see this happening is if Skip somehow makes it to a BCS bowl.  Sorry Pirates, but I don't like the chances of that.

That being said, I think Skip has a better team at ECU.  Notre Dame is the most overrated team in the country, as Jimmy Clausen is the most overrated player.

Charlie

I was gonna say that Charlie Weiss is the most overrated coach in college football. But then I remembered that nobody is rating him very high these days.
