Andre Dawkins considers Duke for 2009

Bookmark and Share

Andre Dawkins, a highly ranked 2010 basketball recruit who has verbally committed to Duke, is considering joining the Blue Devils sooner as a member of the class of 2009.

"It's not a done deal at all," said Andre Dawkins, the recruit's father who goes by the same name. "It's a possibility we're looking into."

Dawkins' father said they will make a decision around Aug. 24.

Dawkins, who attended Atlantic Shores Christian School (Virginia Beach, Va.), would be a high school senior this fall.

He is considering enrolling at Duke early because he has almost met his graduation requirements, having completed his freshman year of high school at a public school before transferring and reclassifying as a freshman at his current school.

He has completed four years of high school.

Dawkins, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard, is currently enrolled in a course that if completed could help him possibly join the Blue Devils.

"He still has to complete something before that would take place," Dawkins' father said. "He has all of the requirements as far as credits. He did real well on the entrance exams."

He would also need to be cleared for eligibility by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Dawkins' father said they looked at Elliot Williams' departure from Duke last month and contemplated the idea of leaving for Durham early.

He said the family had already decided Dawkins would leave Atlantic Shores and enroll at a prep school like Hargrave Military Academy.

Bluecatt

Bluecatt must be on vacation or forgot his password? Not complaining, just an observation. As far as Dawkins coming early, seems like the timing would be good, i.e. they could use the help this year.

Okay

I will agree to that. Just curious, starts at UNC, graduates at State and now is at Dook? Kind of hard to believe.

I guess it just shows the

I guess it just shows the difference in the caliber of students the two ACC schools recruit.

Typical

Typical

Please elaborate

?

No need

It was just a cheap shot.

Never mind that State basketball had the highest Academic Progress Rate in the ACC and was in the top 10 percent in the NCAA. Not to mention 6 players with a 3.0 or better, including 3 Lowe recruits who will seriously challenge for playing time this season. And how about those prolific sociology degrees that Duke basketball specializes in?

Legit arguments exist supporting the premise that Duke basketball (currently) is better than State. This is not one of them.

And props to Johnny

And props to Johnny Thomas...  Academic All-ACC last year pursing his interest in architectural design.  Will graduate in only 3 years next summer.

Check me on this...

but wasn't Ben McCauley All-Conference academic every year he played?

Re: No need

I was unaware that we had the pleasure of reading the arrogant postings of University of New Jersey at Durham supporters such as rmoore.  Especially when these "high-caliber student" recruits at Dook are enrolling in high school for 5 years.  Whether it was 5 years for basketball reasons or academic reasons, we all know that K will sink to the lowest levels for any advantage.

This could be a big boost

for Dook.  Kind of weird how Coach K can bring in a guy a year early, while Lorenzo Brown has to miss his first year at State because of attendance issues.  That being said, Dawkins fills a huge hole in Dook's team.  The Heels should definitely get the sweep this year, but it will be interesting to see Dook in 2010 with a back court of Seth Curry and Andre Dawkins with a year under his belt.

The only boost they are

The only boost they are going to get is from the Heels kicking that tail
