Former N.C. State head coach Chuck Amato, above right,  will be out of a job at Florida State after the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida State running backs coach Dexter Carter told the Sentinel that coach Jimbo Fisher has informed Carter and three other assistants that they will not be retained after the bowl.

Amato, 63, is in his second tour of duty with Florida State and has coached a total of 21 seasons there under Bobby Bowden, who is retiring after the bowl game. Amato's current title is executive associate head coach, and he's in charge of Florida State's linebackers.

Strength coach Todd Stroud, who was on Amato's staff at N.C. State, and defensive ends coach Jody Allen also won't return next season, according to the Sentinel.

Amato was 49-37 as N.C. State's head coach over seven seasons. He was fired after going 3-9 in 2006 and replaced by Tom O'Brien.

Locke says Amato & State have no class

Locke you tarheel fans seem to think all you have to do is continue to self annoint UNC has the only school that has class. What a joke.

Did you forget the total lack of sportsmanship displayed by the UNC football team after they lost again to State?
Greg Little woofing it up and appearing to spit on an injured State player. Yates taunting the State bench after his touchdown passes that he stopped throwing in the 2nd half. Defensive back Brown, among others, trying to fight on the field AFTER the game was over.

Yes you TarHeels have all the class available in the college sports world. Just keep telling everyone that and then act like your thugs did at this year's State game.

UNC talks the talk but it doesn't walk the walk.

Lol, I brought up the topic

Lol, I brought up the topic of Chuck coming back to coach our defense a few days ago as a joke! While he did good things for our program and coached us to one of the best defenses in the country for a couple years, it's just not in the cards. Like JPDOhio is saying, it just isn't realistically possible. Think about it like a bad breakup...sometimes you just know that you will never get back together with someone.

it won't happen

but i have seen more than one "train wreck" get back together in my lifetime!

If those two could co-exsist, I would then make ncsu a player.  ASSuming your next QB can be equally or better than RWilson.  no question.

Amato

Chuck is a jerk, he didn't do anything for the wolfies but leave them with a crappy team. He did get Rivers and he wouldn't have won ten games the whole time he was at state without him. He was the one who said state was a "football school",
excuse me! Of course coach Tom "who licked the red off my candy face" O'Brien still has a long way to go. The current wolfies stink and if wilson opts out they will be even worse.

Silly Yankee

Mike O'Cain pretty much packaged Rivers for NC State. Yes, Chuck was able to convince him to maintain his school choice, but Mike should get the credit for the recruiting of Rivers. Still can't believe Rivers wasn't even looked at by Alabama or Auburn. Glad they didn't.

Though, you are correct by saying that Amato is a jerk. He is. His ego hurts him more than it will ever help him.

Chuck

When all is said and done, Chuck deserves credit for the excitement he helped bring to Wolfpack football and the impact he had on the new facilities. He also had the good sense to lock up Philip Rivers when most college coaches questioned whether Rivers could be a productive college QB. Chuck also was able to recruit amazing talent on the defensive side.

The reality is that there is simply no way he comes back to State in a subordinate capacity. For all his talent as a coach and recruiter, Jimbo is giving him the boot, even though they need a defensive coordinator. Why? Could it be that working for Jimbo Fisher is not the same as working for your mentor and that the lifelong loyalty that Chuck had for Bobby does not exist with Jimbo?

It is well documented that Chuck's coaching staff was a revolving door. He obviously did not inspire loyalty in his assistants. His teams were famous for having a lack of discipline. Chuck also seemed to relish the spotlight. These are not qualities that would indicate to me that he would be a good fit for TOB's staff.

So, it is fun to explore these what ifs. But it is more likely that Urban Meyer will leave Florida for NC State than for Chuck to find his way back to Raleigh as a Wolfpack coach.

Who were the coaches that were rumored

Which coaches were rumored to be fighting each other at FSU earlier this year? How does that list compare to the ones that have been let go?

fighters

Amato and Fisher were reportedly fighting but both swore they had a friendship and that the fighting was not true.

Amato

FSU gave him his golden parachute. Now let him go coach high school football somewhere in Florida.

Interesting

Give him a fake title like the one he had at FSU and let him recruit Florida.

amato

let hm come back to state.  they deserve eachother.  no class.

State should consider him...

He has a good defensive mind and he could help in recruiting.

He has one major failing (in my opinion), and it is not necessarily his ego.

He either coaches players to be (or recruits players that are) hyper-aggressive. While this seems like a good quality for a football player, it unfortunately means that you will have a lot of penalties. State was plagued by penalties during his tenure. His players seemed to be practically in a frenzied state; hair-triggers ready to go off. And go off they did. A lot!

I have read that Amato's name has come up as a head coach candidate at Marshall.

I think he could be a very good head coach (or DC) if he can keep that hyper-aggressive thing in check.

amazing

that his kool aide still appears attractive to some in west raleigh

Uh huh

Chuck will always be heavily regarded for what he did to get Carter-Finley to where it is today. Chuck, while not a very good game day adjustment coach or disciplinarian, is a pretty good defensive mind. It's dumb to think that NC State would ever try to get him back--nor would Chuck want to come back.

If Mike Archer did get the heave--which he won't, unfortunately--I'd rather State go get Reggie Herring. State finished ranked 7th in overall D when he was the D coordinator.

BTW, how did the N&O resist putting in some unrelated spot on what Herb is doing out at ASU? Hmm. I guess they're too busy with the story that's sure to come out next week. "Herb Sendek likes the food in Arizona better than Raleigh." Dun dun dunnnnnn.

Chuck

personally, I'd fire the POS who runs the state defense and hire Amato. but, that makes too much sense for that to happen.

Hire Amato????

 CHUCK

"personally, I'd fire the POS who runs the state defense and hire Amato. but, that makes too much sense for that to happen."

I'm not a NCSU fan but hiring Chuck makes absolutely no sense.

Possible

I don't know?:

1. He is an alum

2. He is available

3. He had State playing pretty good defense in his day.

4. He is entertaining on the side lines.

5.

He lost to UNC on the regular. No thanks.

6.

State would have to double the size of its facilities just to have enough room to fit his ego in.

Really, the terms that he left under (no press conference, no appearances on campus afterwards) make it impossible to have him back under any circumstances.

7.

actually, I hope ncsu DOES NOT hire him b/c he would turn the defense around and make it important again.  who cares if they get 1 or 2 unnecessary 15 yd penaltys per game if the defense is ALREADY GIVING UP 400 SOME YDS P/G!!

you state guys have it backwards on this.

8.

There were not just "1 or 2 unnecessary 15 yd penalties per game." They were ultra-dumb and always at the most costly moment of the game. Does the Va. Tech vs NC State game during the fall of 2005 ring any bells? State would've beaten the hokies were it not for some of those dumb penalties.

Archer should get the heave, but I think he has an excuse not to get the boot with all the injuries that occurred this season. The strength and conditioning program MUST be put under heavy scrutiny. State's had too many injuries for there not to be a link with that.
