North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough and Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher have been named the best male and female athletes, respectively, in the ACC by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Hansbrough has been named the Anthony J. McKevlin Award as the top male performer across sports in the conference. Hansbrough was the national player of the year and led the Tar Heels to the Final Four.
McKevlin was a former sports editor of The News & Observer and the award has been given out since the conference began in 1954.
Tincher, a pitcher, received the Mary Garber Award to the league's top woman. Garber was a sports writer at the Winston Salem Journal.
Tincher led Virginia Tech to an ACC title and earned national player of the year honors.

It's kind of sad...
Tue, 07/22/2008 - 19:58 — chazhooWhen one of the best tennis players in college history, having one of the best years in college tennis history, can't win his conference athlete of the year after winning the NCAA Single's National Title two years in a row, it's a shame. Somdev Devvarman deserved to win this award based on his senior season and career. He's the 13th player in 124 years to win back to back titles. 44-1 on the season, believed to be the first player since Jimmy Connor's to finish with 1 or few losses (ole John McEnroe couldn't do that). 2 time ITA National Player of the Year, only 3rd player int he awards 29 year history to repeat. He was the first player to be the ITA National Indoor Singles Championship and NCAA Singles Championship in the same season. He ended his career Devvarman ends his career with a 158-27 career singles record, setting the school record for career victories. He was 88-6 over his final two seasons at Virginia. Devvarman concluded his career on a school record 36-match winning streak.
Hansbrough is a fantastic player, but Devvarman deserved the award this year, reward Tyler next season, but this year clearly belonged to Somdev.
