ACC plays catch-up in hoops recruiting

Bookmark and Share

With summer recruiting about to heat up, basketball coaches at ACC schools have a lot of work to do.

Five of the top 11 players on scout.com’s top 100 list for the Class of 2010 have committed to schools. None is headed to the ACC. Jared Sullinger and DeShaun Thomas have chosen Ohio State, Tristan Thompson picked Texas, Jeremy Richmond chose Illinois and Perry Jones picked Baylor (insert Dwon Clifton joke here).

The top ACC commitment is from Kinston wing Reggie Bullock, who’s rated No. 14 and committed to North Carolina. Duke also has a top-20 commitment in guard Andre Dawkins of Virginia Beach, Va., who’s at No. 18.

Scout.com’s No. 12-rated prospect, Raleigh Word of God Christian Academy forward C.J. Leslie, recently withdrew his commitment from N.C. State, though he’s still considering the Wolfpack.

The good news for the ACC is that it already has commitments from three top-50 point guards – Kendall Marshall of Arlington, Va. (North Carolina), Ian Miller of Charlotte (Florida State) and Ryan Harrow of Marietta, Ga. (N.C. State).

And there still is plenty of high-level uncommitted talent out there for the ACC to chase. The list is led by forward Harrison Barnes of Ames, Iowa, who is the top-rated player in the nation and still is considering Duke and North Carolina.

But there’s no doubt that the ACC has some catching up to do after several early commitments after the Big Ten and Big 12 got out to a fast start among the elite prospects for 2010.

GOheels1984 its spell

GOheels1984 its spell D-U-K-E!! not dook, is that the best a unc fan can do, how about THE NORTH FAGG-A-LINA TARQUEERS I KNOW U LIKE THAT!!LOL BABY BLUE, BABY!!

WOW bva919

Sure sounds like you are either a complete homophobe or solidly entrenched in the closet with ample paranoia!  I really don't care which, but you really shed some light on yourself.  As to spelling, while nothing new in his post, it is an accepted taunt, and has been since Trinity College sold it's soul to the tobacco "Dukes".  I have to laugh when I think about the fact that Wake Forest (a Baptist college) rejected the money for name offer, but Duke (notice I spelled it right to make you "happy") a Methodist college sold it's soul to the "blue" devil!"  Get over yourself, come out into the beautiful Carolina Blue daylight and sweat not the small stuff!

Ken

You make it sound like the point guards are among the 50 best PG's in the nation. That's hardly a compliment. In truth, they are PG's who are in the top 50 PLAYERS in the nation.

And the ACC just finished a great recruiting year with GT, Clemson, UNC, FSU and Duke all getting McD's A-A and NCSU got one of the biggest snubs in Lorenzo Brown.

And considering 3 of the 4,000 (ok, 8) teams on John Wall's list are in the ACC, I'd say the reason they have catching up to do is b/c they invested so much into this year's recruiting class. So as ACC schools got all these 2009 players, the other schools from other conferences had to cut their losses and try for 2010

The reason is because UNC

The reason is because UNC and Dook are the only schools in the ACC that draw top 10 recruits regularly. I attribute the fact that the ACC has none so far is that UNC is probably not going to recruit but 1 or 2 players for the 2010 class to compensate for an expected exit of players in a couple of years to the pros. Not sure what Dook's standing is but could be similar. The rest of the ACC schools like Wake, Clemson, Virginia, and Boston College are a step below and could get top recruits but won't get players like this anyway. The rest of the ACC including State College and the other ACC teams will get the bottom feeders. That's why there aren't any top 10 recruits so far. There may only be one or two at most.

wow..

VERY CLEAR that you don't know anything about recruiting. Keep your ignorance to yourself next time PLEASE!

To say BC and UVA can get top recruits but NCSU will get bottom feeders is just a lie. BC never gets top recruits, but they turn into top players. UVA -- that program is just about dead on every level. NCSU -- no real on-court success but has done OK in recruiting with next year's class and already getting 4-star Tracy Smith and McD A-A J.J. Hickson.

And to say Wake can't get "players like this" is hilarious. Ever heard of Al-Faroq Aminu, Jeff Teague, James Johnson? Didn't they have the nation's No. 2 recruiting class last year? You don't do that without being able to get top-notch players.

typical UNC-Duke snobbery that ESPN has helped out so much since the turn of the 2000's

Wake

WF already has (4) 4-star players with verbal commitments for 2010. A very strong class.

The rest of the ACC

The rest of the ACC has some catching up to do but The Heels are just fine.
