ACC disciplines some refs from UNC-Md

Bookmark and Share

Some members of the officiating crew that worked last week's North Carolina loss at Maryland have been disciplined by the ACC.

"In the normal review, some officiating errors with the clock were made, and some members of the crew received disciplinary action," ACC associate commissioner for football media relations Mike Finn said Thursday.

Finn would not elaborate on the disciplinary action and said the crew has not been suspended.

With about two minutes left in the game, the replay official overturned a call, saying Chris Turner's pass to Torrey Smith for Maryland was incomplete. North Carolina coach Butch Davis said he didn't think enough time was put back on the clock after that ruling.

Maryland subsequently kicked a field goal for a 17-15 lead, and the Tar Heels got the ball back with 1:36 remaining. North Carolina's Cameron Sexton threw a loss-clinching interception with 49 seconds left.

ACC football officiating coordinator Doug Rhoads recognized the error and called North Carolina coach Butch Davis to talk about it before Davis even had a chance to contact the ACC, Finn said.

North Carolina football spokesman Kevin Best said Davis would not comment on the disciplinary action.

Ok, refs goofed on the time. Facts are it should never have come down to a clock issue. Heels had opportunity and they didn't come through. Love'em regardless, but disappointed with the play Sat. It's over and now its 'pain' for the pack. Go Heels!

Please!

Don't give the Chapel Hill folks any more to cry about. They will have enough to deal with after this weekends coming debacle.

how about a ref clock?

not this game/not this time......
but, doesn't i seem like the Games are Longer
Due to Review? two years ago, the goal was to
shorten 3 hour games. now, with Booth Review,
the games are 3.8 hours (from sign on to off)
on AVG. for example:
1. game one: 12 Noon to 3:54PM.
2. game two: 4:00 to 7:59.
3. game three: 8:00 to 11:44.
11:44 hours by 3 = 3.8xx.
the refs are the problem.
put them on the clock.

What kind of punishment..

doesn't involve suspension? I assume they are paid per game. If you let them keep working you have to pay them.

its w/e now

yeah this sucks, and that could have changed the whole game around.. but its over now so it's worthless. no punishment of a ref makes up for a loss. You can punish a ref all you want, but at the end of the day the team it effected still gets the L.

who knows

what the outcome could have been with the right time put back on the lcock which would have been 2:19.  play calling would have been different ...

2:24

why not include the actual time that should have been put back on the clock in your blog?
