ACC baseball: No Fenway in 2010

Bookmark and Share

ACC baseball players can forget next year's trip to Fenway.
In an effort to control costs, the ACC has moved its 2010 baseball tournament from Boston's historic Fenway Park to NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro. The ACC announced the scheduling change Tuesday.
ACC commissioner John Swofford said in a statement that the conference still plans to hold its baseball tournament at Fenway at some time in the future, but needs to cut travel costs.
"Cost-containment is very much universal at this point, and our conference and our schools are no exception," Swofford said. "With so many issues at the moment in terms of budget and travel, we simply felt it was in the best interests of all concerned to hold the 2010 event at a more centrally located venue."
The 2010 tournament will be held May 26-30 at the home of the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League.
Originally the tournament was scheduled to be at Fenway this year, but a scheduling error by the Fenway Sports Group sent the ACC scrambling in August to find a host for 2009. The Boston Red Sox are playing at home against the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets from May 20-24, when the ACC Tournament had been scheduled at Fenway.
Instead, the tournament will be held at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park this season. Fenway was supposed to provide ACC players with a chance to play in one of the most hallowed venues in the world in 2010.
One of the nation's top-rated minor league venues will take Fenway’s place. Baseball America recently rated NewBridge Bank Park as the top stadium in the South Atlantic League and the No. 8 overall minor league stadium nationally. The stadium seats 7,499 and has 16 luxury suites.

There is nothing like Fenway. It is a shame, because it is where baseball started. Why would they move it, there is nothing special about NewBridge. Fenway all the wayyyyy

This is a really bad

This is a really bad decision. The ACC tourney should be at Fenway every 3rd year so that every ACC baseball player gets to play one game there at some point in his college career. Seriously, it is hard to compare the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park with the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers .

Another thing is that for alumni who do not live in the Carolinas, the constant drumbeat of tournaments in North Carolina is tiresome. With Duke, UNC, Wake, and NC State all so close together, there are already too many games in that area. If you don't live there and you want to go to a game or a tournament, there is a lot more incentive to spend money to go to DC, NYC, Boston, Atlanta or Miami than to go on yet another trip to yet another mid or small sized North Carolina town. Don't get me wrong, Charlotte is ok, and was a nice place to visit for a bowl, and I know there is a lot of support for Greensboro, but no city in NC compares with Boston, or NYC, or the capitol of the U.S. or Miami.

wasn't it supposed to be in the DBAP?

That'd be just as good of a location and a better venue!

Penn St.

Should have asked Penn St. first, then VT, then WVU. SC will never leave the SEC even though they are constantly doormats in football and bball. ND has no incentive to join a conference.

no Fenway

thank goodness! as one who has been to the ACC baseball tournament, i could not understand holding the tournament in Fenway. The attendance while good isn't that great. Those who would attend would be swallowed up by Fenway Park. A stadium for a single A or double A baseball team fits better. Loved the Jacksonville site.

Jax??

there is only one thing Jacksonville, Fla is good for and it doesn't exactly make the town feel good about its self!

I agree BC does not fit well into the ACC...

The ACC should have moved whatever mountains it could have to get S. Carolina. I know realistically that wouldn't have happened. Geographically, though, Boston doesn't make sense. I know what the ACC was going after, but BC gets no play there, why would the ACC?

I agree with the BC comment.

I agree with the BC comment. Besides men's basketball and football, there is nothing else really that they bring to the table except for long roadtrips up north. They are awful in every sport otherwise.

The ACC should have invited West Virginia instead. Longshot, but Notre Dame might have made a nice addition as well.

BC gets plenty of play in

BC gets plenty of play in New England, it just so happens there are teams from the four major pros sports there too.

If the  ACC kept to its plan and brought Syracuse in, it would have made people north of Delaware really care about the conference beyond UNC-Duke basketball. As it stands, BC (with Miami) has brought more attention to the conference in NJ/NY/NE then there would have been otherwise. And that means more t.v., more press and more northern college-bound kids considering southern schools.

In an ideal world, Penn State would have never joined the big ten and  there'd be a northeast football conference built around them, 'cuse, Pitt and BC  - but people have been lamenting that since the '80s.

As for the Fenway screw up - that's just 'cause the Red Sox stink. How does the braintrust there not realize they are playing ballgames then? Go Yankees!

meh

BC's pretty good in women's basketball, and is a POWERHOUSE in hockey.

Of course, the ACC can't really brag b/c it doesnt have hockey, and you can't expect BC to do much more than they've done. They've been to the ACC title game twice in FB and have played for a ACC Championship in bball and been one of the best programs since joining.

It's not like an alliance with the ACC is going to make them good in lacrosse or baseball. The ACC needed that boston media market to sell ads to and they got it.

I think JPG has said this plenty of times however and it's true. BC makes it about one-too-many private schools and/or schools with a sparse fan base in the ACC. There's so many bad combos for a ACC football title game between BC, Wake, Duke, GT and Miami it's not even funny. Imagine the crowd shots for those! yuck

Why stop there?

Can we just get rid of Boston College entirely, and quit pretending like it makes any sense at all for them to be in the league?
