Don't get in Teague's way

In case you missed Wake's 75-69 win over Cal State-Fullerton — or any of the 238 editions of SportsCenter — Jeff Teague gets two of his 24 points over poor Gerald Anderson, who's four inches taller than Teague, by the way.

Wake moves on in the 76 Classic out in Anaheim and gets UTEP in the semifinals.

Wake Forest puts away WSSU

WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — Jeff Teague scored 14 points and No. 19 Wake Forest shook off a sloppy first half to beat Winston-Salem State 62-31 on Monday night.

The Demon Deacons (3-0) shot 68 percent in the second half, held the Rams (0-3) to one field goal during a 15½-minute stretch spanning halftime and forced them into a Joel Coliseum-record scoring low — the fewest points they've allowed since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953 — in completing a three-game sweep of instate mid-majors.

Wake Forest, which entered averaging an ACC-best 107 points, finished 45 points below that, but overcame its 23 turnovers by generating 22 takeaways against a team that seemed determined to slow things down with its four-corners offense.

With both division titles still up for grabs and N.C. State and Virginia looking to get to six wins and Clemson trying to get bowl-eligible as well, the last week of the ACC season is certainly overloaded with drama -- not to mention potential bowl implications.

In Conference USA, East Carolina already has the East Division title locked up going into Friday's game against UTEP, but there's a three-way tie in the West Division standings heading into the final week between Houston, Rice and Tulsa.

Eagles edge Deacons

WINSTON-SALEM — Struggling offensively, as it has for much of this season, Wake Forest relied on its defense and special teams to try and pull it through a must-have football game against Boston College on Saturday.

It was almost enough.

Though not enough to overcome a late-game rally by the Eagles, who with little over a minute remaining pulled ahead and pulled off a rousing 24-21 victory over the Demon Deacons at BB&T Field.

Atlantic Division tie-breakers

Maryland (4-2) and Boston College (3-3) both still control their own fate in the Atlantic Division. Win out and either the Terps or Eagles are in Tampa on Dec. 6 for the ACC Champsionship Game.

Wake Forest (4-3) and Florida State (4-3) are still alive but need help.

Remember, the first tie-breaker is the head-to-head result, or group record if more than two teams are tied.

Another in-state win for Wolfpack

First Look

RALEIGH — N.C. State can't win the ACC title, but the Wolfpack can still win the mythical state title.

The Wolfpack beat Wake Forest 21-17 on Saturday to improve to 3-0 against in-state opponents. More importantly, with consecutive ACC wins, the Pack can still attain a tangible prize for the 2008 season. At 4-6, State needs two wins in its final two games to qualify for a bowl game.

Wake routs N.C. Central

WINSTON-SALEM (AP) —
Freshman Al-Farouq Aminu had 21 points and 10 rebounds and No. 21 Wake Forest opened its season of high expectations by routing N.C. Central 94-48 on Friday night.

James Johnson had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jeff Teague added 14 points for the Demon Deacons. They led by 31 points before the Eagles made their second field goal.

Grobe and O'Brien: Mirror images?

When Tom O’Brien and Jim Grobe look across the field to the opposite sideline on Saturday, in some respects it will be like looking in the mirror.

Yes, O’Brien is a lot taller than Grobe. And Grobe’s Wake Forest program is much more established than O’Brien’s in his second season at N.C. State.

But the similarities between the programs are obvious.

N.C. State: Mack Brown would be so proud the concept of the "state championship" lives on 11 years after his departure from UNC.

The Wolfpack is 2-0 against in-state opponents and suddenly inspired for the next two games against Wake Forest and UNC.

On a side note, if State played Duke's schedule, the Pack would be bowl eligible by now. And if Duke played State's schedule, the Devils would be 3-6.
