ACC to have presence at NFL combine

North Carolina wide receiver Brandon Tate is among 35 ACC players, plus two more from ECU, scheduled to attend the NFL scouting combine Feb. 22-26 in Indianapolis.

Tate was among the NCAA leaders in total yardage and touchdowns when he suffered a right-knee injury during the team’s 29-24 win over Notre Dame on Oct. 11 in Chapel Hill.

The 6-1, 195-pound Burlington product underwent surgery on Oct. 13 and did not play afterward. Kevin Best of the UNC sports information department said this week that Tate has been doing light workouts during the past few weeks.

Deacs blow by Eagles

BOSTON (AP) — A victory over North Carolina helped cement Wake Forest's spot near the top of the rankings. Beating Boston College did something for the Demon Deacons' psyche as well.

"I told them, 'We've never beaten Boston College, and pretty soon you've got to say: Enough's enough,'" Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said Wednesday night after the Demon Deacons' first-ever victory over Boston College — a year after they lost to BC by 39. "We rubbed salt in that wound this week."

Jeff Teague scored 29 points and Al-Farouq Aminu had 15 with eight rebounds as No. 2 Wake Forest followed its victory over the Tar Heels with an easy, 83-63 win against Boston College.

Wake jumps Duke in AP Top 25

Wake Forest's 92-89 win over UNC on Sunday moved the Demon Deacons to No. 2 in the AP Top 25, one of four ACC teams ranked in the top 10. The Deacs also received two first-place votes — the other 70 went to No. 1 Pitt.

Duke's one slot behind the Deacs at No. 3 with UNC at No. 5 and Clemson, one of three remaining unbeaten teams in the country, at No. 10.

ACC making progress in football

• 2008 ACC results and BCS results
• 2007 BCS records
• 2006 BCS records

It wasn't great but it was better. After the 2008 college football season, the ACC can at least claim progress.

While the SEC won its third straight national title, the ACC can claim more wins (17) against teams from the Bowl Championship Series than the SEC or any of the other major conference during the 2008 season.

Joel will test Tar Heels' road streak

CHAPEL HILL — With the tie-dyed crowd, pre-game motorcycle and overall boisterous atmosphere before big games at Joel Coliseum, "it's extremely difficult to have that focus that you need to play in a place like that,'' North Carolina coach Roy Williams said.

But the third-ranked Tar Heels are out to prove again today they have that concentration.

Bowl system: College football’s leaders did it again: another tidy postseason with a clear-cut national champion and no doubt about the final two teams. The BCS is the “ShamWow” of postseasons.

Like Vince, the shill for the “As Seen On TV” towel says, why do you want to work twice as hard when the BCS solves everyone’s problems?

What’s that? Just ignore Utah, USC and Texas.

Duke jumps UNC in Top 25

As expected, North Carolina's 85-78 loss to Boston College Sunday cost the Tar Heels the top spot in this week's college basketball poll.

Undefeated Pittsburgh (14-0) is the new No. 1 in The AP Top 25 released this afternoon, one of a record nine Big East teams in the Top 25.

Lookahead to ACC football in 2009

It’s way too early to start going through the 2009 ACC schedule game by game and predicting who might win the league. But here’s an early ranking of the teams in terms of the talent they should have returning in 2009:
