Lacking fire, Blue Devils doused by Hurricanes

DURHAM -- Over the last week or two, one can tell how frustrated Mike Krzyzewski is with his team by the number of times he raps his knuckles against the table during his post-game press conference.

After Miami surprised Duke 78-74 in overtime on Sunday afternoon for the Blue Devils' second straight ACC loss at home, it was suggested Duke takes winning at Cameron Indoor Stadium for granted. Krzyzewski didn’t disagree with the assessment, although he wondered how that could be the case since he regularly implores his team to guard against complacency.

“I’m with them all the time," Krzyzewski said. "They should listen, and they did not. That’s not good.”

Three Points: N.C. State 78, Miami 73

A belated Three Points from the Miami win, thanks to a lost morning at the Miami airport.

1) Keeping your eye on the ball

After N.C. State's 78-73 win over Miami gave the Wolfpack a 4-1 ACC record, and share of first place, first-year Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried stayed true to his talking points.

N.C. State has a "long way to go" has been Gottfried's refrain since he took the job in April and a 4-1 ACC start hasn't changed his mindset.

Wood lifts Pack to 78-73 win over Miami, tie for first in ACC

Updated 5:23 p.m.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Scott Wood put his name in the ACC record book on Sunday and lifted N.C. State into a first-place tie in the ACC standings in the process.

After the Wolfpack's 78-73 win over Miami, a group of about two dozen State fans, mostly his family members, waited behind the team bench to congratulate him.

As the group cheered as he ran off the court, Wood tried to bury his chin in his shoulder to shrug off the attention and as if to say "Ah, that was nothing."

N.C. State women face Miami on ESPNU

The N.C. State women's basketball team looks to regroup from a loss to Georgia Tech in its ACC opener on Monday night. The Pack travel to No. 12 Miami tonight in a conference game featured on ESPNU.

After traveling nearly 5,000 miles to Honolulu, Hawaii, the Wolfpack returned to Reynolds Coliseum to face the Yellow Jackets. Bleary-eyed and jet-lagged, the Pack stumbled to a 76-66 loss, playing in its fourth game in five days.

The Pack staggered after winning the Rainbow Wahine Invitational tournament.

"I think that travel got us," State coach Kellie Harper said in a phone interview on Wednesday. "But I would never use that as an excuse."

Duke's injury list shortened

Duke's football injury list has shortened over the past two weeks, with players like junior running back Desmond Scott and redshirt junior center Brian Moore working back into the lineup.

As the Blue Devils (3-5, 1-3 ACC) head to Miami on Saturday, senior saftety Matt Daniels is listed as probable, with only two players listed as questionable – defensive tackle Jamal Bruce and cornerback Johnny Williams.

The Devils, who have dropped three consecutive ACC games, need their full roster if they have any chance of defeating the Hurricanes for the first time since 1976.

Despite losses, Duke football players remain hopeful

DURHAM – Despite three consecutive losses to ACC opponents, Duke football players balked at any notion of throwing in the towel with four games remaining on their regular-season schedule.

“There’s still hope out there,” said Duke senior safety Matt Daniels, whose play in a 14-10 loss to No. 15 Virginia Tech last week exemplified the effort and determination the Blue Devils (3-5, 1-3 ACC) have possessed during a topsy-turvy season.

UNC overwhelming choice to win ACC

CHARLOTTE – North Carolina received 57 of a possible 59 first-place votes to finish atop the ACC media poll released Wednesday at the conference’s Operation Basketball media event.

The Tar Heels return all five starters, including preseason ACC player of the year selection Harrison Barnes, from a team that finished 29-8, reached an NCAA regional final and won first place in the ACC with a 14-2 conference record last season.

Duke was picked second in the poll, followed by Florida State, Virginia, Miami, Virginia Tech and Clemson. N.C. State was selected to finish eighth, with Maryland, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Boston College closing out the poll.

Miami picked to finish No. 1 in ACC women's basketball preseason standings

GREENSBORO – The Miami women's basketball program was picked to finish first in the ACC's preseason predicted order of finish.

After finishing tied with Duke in the regular season last year, moving from 12th in the standings during the 2009-10 season, the Hurricanes were tabbed by a Blue Ribbon panel of voters as the team's top team entering the 2011-12 season. They earned that selection for the first time since joining the conference in 2004.

Update 6:38 p.m.

CHAPEL HILL – The potential problems were always there during North Carolina’s first six games: the lack of third-down stops, an inconsistent secondary, a still-learning first-year quarterback.

But what was overshadowed against lesser opponents during their 5-1 start was exposed during the Tar Heels’ 30-24 loss to Miami (3-3) at Kenan Stadium on Saturday.

Although a late touchdown grab by freshman Reggie Wilkins and onside kick recovery by sophomore Curtis Campbell gave Carolina (5-2) a chance to win in the final minute, UNC never really recovered from a slow start and early 17-0 hole.

ACC in the NFL

You don't have to look far to find ACC talent in the NFL.

Every team in the league has at least three players from ACC schools and the conference has a total 249 players in the league as the season begins tonight in Green Bay.

Despite a recent downturn on the field, Miami leads the ACC with NFL players with 44. For the first time since expansion, Maryland takes over the second spot with 28, edging Florida State, which is down to 25 from an ACC-best 46 in 2006, and North Carolina (24).
