Update (4:05 p.m.): with UNC choice
Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High quarterback Everett Golson, considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation for the class of 2011, committed to North Carolina on Friday at a press conference at his high school.
Golson, a high school junior, had written scholarship offers including Clemson, East Carolina, Duke, Stanford, Michigan and Virginia Tech in addition to the Tar Heels. Golson, a point guard, is expected to play basketball in college as well.
"He has always been a big Tar Heel fan and this has always been a dream of his," said Mickey Wilson, Golson's football coach.
UNC did not sign a quarterback in the class of 2010, which means Golson will join Bryn Renner, a redshirt freshman, and Braden Hanson, a sophomore, on the UNC depth chart in 2011.
"He realizes there's an opportunity there for early playing time," Wilson said. "Personally, I'm biased, but I think he'll have a great chance to play early."
The Observer ranks Golson No. 3 on its list of the top junior recruits in South Carolina (with our early list of top juniors in N.C., too.)
Listed at 6-1 and 175 pounds, Golson has started at Myrtle Beach since he was a freshman. He was a member of the South Carolina all-state football team as a junior, when he completed 224-of-356 pass attempts for 3,529 yards, 47 touchdowns and three interceptions. Golson also rushed for 199 yards and five touchdowns as Myrtle Beach finished 13-2, losing to Clinton in the state Class AAA title game.
In three years, Golson is 659-of-1,061 passing for 9,872 yards, 126 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. Myrtle Beach is 39-4 with Golson as the starter.

sweet
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 17:14 — gvillegatrIt is official. UNC got him. now he needs to produce when he gets to campus in '11.
He's, obviously, still a couple of years away from impacting the team one way or the other ........................
I am loving how this years
Sat, 02/06/2010 - 17:09 — unc098I am loving how this years recruiting is going. This kid is seeing the graffiti on the wall and getting in while the getting is good. Tj is going to have to improve immensely to hold on to his job this fall. Maybe hearing footsteps will help him to concentrate more. We have all seen that Davis will change QBs in a hurry despite the fall out. Sexton would have been better off staying. He truly disappeared at Catawba. He probably would have gotten his job back. I don't blame him for leaving however. I think he got a raw deal.
sorely missing
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 17:12 — gvillegatrI've always maintained (like alot of other guys) this is the piece UNC has sorely missed out on.
If UNC can get him and he works out, UNC can certainly get to the level they need to ... to compete nationally.
No t

Fri, 02/05/2010 - 12:45 — tjfooseHahaha.... that's funny. I was wondering what Carolina fans would start saying since 'just wait till basketball season' no longer works.
So now it's wrestling season. I always thought that was a sport carolina boys should excel in.
Thanks foose
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 12:56 — SurferSo you are saying that "just wait till bb season" no longer works because the football program is so dominant?
Thanks
I wrestled in jr. high and high school
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 22:05 — UNC1998That sport is a killer. You must be in shape to do it.
at least crazy to do it.
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 23:11 — gvillegatrWe'd be in the high school weight room working out and the wrestlers would come in decked out in trash bags trying to do some cardio attempting to lose weight like a MoFo. crazy.
Another highly rated QB
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 12:00 — awdracerAnother highly rated QB bites the dust. The graveyard of quarterbacks strikes again.
Haha
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 15:46 — Heels20Because high-caliber QB recruits such as Harrison Beck and Marcus Stone had so much success at NC State.
WELL...
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 11:49 — hellfishIt would'nt matter what the signing "period" was NCSU is NOT getting a QB that this early!
Well...
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 11:59 — YAR8packHas there been any mention of that? No. Perhaps you should learn to read. Nice try, fluffer.
If any statement were made, it was one to support your team keeping this recruit, instead of him jumping from commit to commit.
Well...
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 11:33 — YAR8packIt's widely reported USC has a verbal commit from a 13 year old.
I do wish there was an early signing period in college football like there is in college b-ball. Maybe it'll come to pass.
Hopefully the recruit doesn't jockey between college choices, but I wouldn't believe anything kids say until they sign on the dotted line.
