UPDATE: UNC spokesman Kevin Best confirmed that Tar Heels senior running back Johnny White was on the team flight to Atlanta.
North Carolina has declared six football players ineligible for Saturday’s season-opening against No. 21 Louisana State for breaking school and/or NCAA rules and is withholding at least six others while the investigation continues, the university announced this morning.
UNC is still waiting to establish the eligibility of three other players.
In all, 15 Tar Heels players did not travel to Atlanta with the team this morning for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game.
The six ineligible student-athletes are: defensive tackle Marvin Austin (who was suspended indefinitely Wednesday for breaking team rules), cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn.
The six other players who will be withheld from Saturday’s game are: tailbacks Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston, defensive end Linwan Euwell and safeties Brian Gupton, Da’Norris Searcy and Jonathan Smith.
UNC said in the statement that it also is trying to establish the eligibility of three other players. Team spokesman Kevin Best confirmed this afternoon that three defensive starters - linebackers Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter and safety Deunta Williams - did not board the team plane.
“As I’ve have said, there is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this University,” Tar Heels coach Butch Davis said in the statement.
“We are disappointed the players’ choices have denied them the opportunity to compete alongside their teammates and represent the University of North Carolina. Our coaches and players have a tremendous challenge this weekend, and despite these circumstances, our team will be excited to face LSU.”
The number of games that the affected players may miss has not been determined at this time. The investigation continues to focus on issues involving sports agents and academics.
The football program is currently mired in two investigations. The NCAA, since early July, has been looking into players’ possible improper contact with agents. Last week, the school launched a probe into whether a tutor – who formerly worked for both UNC and head football coach Butch Davis – gave improper academic help to football players.
Athletics director Dick Baddour has said the school’s investigative team has been working around the clock to try to come to as much resolution for as many football players as possible before the No. 18 Tar Heels open the season Saturday.
Baddour said in a prepared statement Friday morning, “We’re obviously very disappointed to learn that the actions of a number of our student-athletes have resulted in their being unable to compete in Saturday’s game. It is important to note again that people should not make assumptions as to the nature of each student-athlete’s involvement with these issues.
“We are still working with the NCAA staff to resolve these eligibility issues. The NCAA is focusing on each of their situations on a case-by-case basis. Together we are working to determine their status in as thorough and fair a process as is possible.
“I know our fans share my disappointment, but I hope they will show their strong support for the student-athletes on the football team who will represent our University on Saturday. I am proud of the way they have worked so hard to prepare for this season despite numerous distractions. They have my full support.”
UNC's news release also included a statement from university Chancellor Holden Thorp.
“Moving forward, Dick Baddour, Butch Davis and I are determined to use this as an opportunity to look hard at our programs, resources and people to ensure that everyone associated with the football program upholds the values that are central to Carolina’s culture, most especially our academic values,” Thorp said.

Dissapointment
Sat, 09/04/2010 - 19:50 — littlecokeI take offense to some of the comments made on here about athletes getting padded grades... I was a college athlete and I worked hard for all of my grades. They were not given to me or any other athlete at my school. These guys made a bad mistake and got caught. Why does it matter if they were white or black they screwed up. Quit making accusations and excuses and help these guys to make better decisions and stand behind the guys that are doing the right thing. Not every athlete is doing things they shouldnt.
The racial discrimination comment
Sat, 09/04/2010 - 15:18 — tedsmithsrAnd would we all be happier if there were some token "caucasians" thrown in just to balance things out, i.e whether they had cheated or not??
Get a grip. These young men were recruited to UNC ( I am a 1970 grad) to play sports; they most likely came academically and socially unprepared and panicked. The coaches and AD are professional hucksters and are completely out of touch with the integrity necessary to be involved in education.

These young men are ALL african american student athletes that are being used for servitude purposes. Not a single white in the bunch! Where is the outcry from the NAACP? The great university of north carolina and the news and observer should be ashamed for attacking the character of these fine young men! Shame on you!

How Much More Humiliating Can This Get?
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 16:42 — Z33221This is as humiliating and embarassing as it can possibly be, and it will be discussed on prime time national television no less. Something --maybe many things -- have gone wrong. Where, pray tell, was the oversight from the coaching staff and academic staff? What is the responsibility of AD Dick Baddour, who when I entered Carolina in September 1967 was the assistant dean of men and then took a post in the law school before being named as AD by the late Michael Hooker??
I have to wonder if former Chancellor James Moeser, who you may recall came to Carolina from the Unviersity of Nebraska (I understand Nebraska is a national college football power) gave Head Coach Butch Davis more freedom in recruiting after he was hired to replace John Bunting.
Brent Mussburger is going to have a field day on ABC/ESPN. Here in Durham the Duke athletics department staff members must be heartily chuckling and snickering at Carolina's misfortune. Bill Friday is correct in his assessment college athletics must be removed from the area of highly expensive entertainment. And, at the very least, I strongly feel Dick Baddour should retire as AD while he still has his honor left.
UNC Needs to Clean House
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 15:29 — stateofmindNow that it is proven there is widespread academic fraud and players are getting free trips, what will you do?
Will you become Faber College? (You are already a national punch line).
Will you admit all of the offenses or just the ones the NCAA can prove?
Will you make your football players become students and go to class or will you continue to let anyone on the team who can run or tackle?
Will you stop associating with people like that Santa guy who has recruited great jocks who are very bad students?
Will you be able to say UNC is a classy school when this is over, or will you be just another dirty school trying to win at the expense of your reputation?
If I were a student at UNC, I would want my degree to mean something other I went to school somewhere that claimed to be great but in fact was just like SMU.
It's up to you, and it's your chance to do the right thing.

No doubt you disapproved of Les Robinson and Herb Sendeck, but their players graduated or at least tried.
Time is a great healer, and eventually the Carolina football program will recover. Even Faber College tried to correct Animal House.
get real
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 16:07 — wooten78I do not think you know the details of the investigation, and neither do I. I hope for State or any other team's sake, they never have to put a microscope on their program. There would be a lot of disappointed people across the country if that happened.
I am guessing you are a State graduate or at least a fan. If you want a State diploma to mean something, why not demand your school investigate its team and "clean house"? Easy answer to a rhetorical question: no team will ever investigate itself with a fine comb unless facing NCAA investigation.
I'll take my UNC diploma over a "state of mind" any day of the week.

Silver lining
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 13:50 — SurferWhew, only 15 players. Some rumors were floating around that it was going to be 30. So look on the bright side, plus we don't know the extent of any infractions. On top of that, we can be proud that UNC is dealing with this in a concervative manner and taking the high road. No one can dispute that....but I am sure they will.
Will be interesting
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 13:49 — ProwlingWoofie...to see what happens if the blacklisted players are actually dismissed from the team/university. I'm sure each player that was 'reviewed' by the NCAA 'Reviewers' was probably given a business card, 'just in case' they remembered anything else that might be helpful in the 'review'.
I'm sure some memories will be jogged if players are ruled ineligible or booted out of school ! The nightmare could just be getting started.

really sad day
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 13:38 — hmfischerThe UNC football program and the athletic department have sold their souls to to ESPN and the television dollar.
Butch Davis and Dick Baddour have to be held responsible. Coming off last year's basketball season fiasco has there ever been a worse period for big-time UNC athletics? I don't think so.
There were the little signs like not playing Duke in the season finale. Renovating Keenan stadium and further shutting out one of the most beautiful football settings in America. Then, there was talk of building a whole new stadium altogether. Fortunately that went away. Now the demolishing of the fieldhouse so a rather ironically named Center of Excellence could be built along with luxury boxes for the high-rollers.
Here's a question that needs to be asked: how many dollars gained from football revenue, all sports for that matter, actually translate into books for the library, support for faculty and administration salaries, and upkeep of the physical plant of the entire university? I think we'd all be disappointed by the answer.
It's easy to see how this happened. It comes from looking at the basketball program and saying, "Gee, why can't our football program have the same level of success? Think of all the money we could be making!" But the Dean Dome came to be built aftera on a foundation of twenty to thirty plus years of exceptional success - playing in Carmichael. The football program is going after a comparable big-time with no real track record other than the good name of the university.
So in comes Butch Davis saddled with the pressure to succeed to fulfill the TV dollar exposure and expectations and to sell the new luxury boxes. The pressure is turned up higher than ever, and now we have this scandal.
Is ninety-year-old Bill Friday, God bless him, the only one who seems to get what's going on? Sure seems like it.

Imagine my shock
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 13:06 — LockeFor most of my life I have been told that UNC-CH was the only institution of higher learning in NC that fielded scholars and All-Americans. The rest of us trotted out a bunch guys that didn't have the ability, character or brains to wear the baby blue. Imagine my shock when I learned that the heels were and are, nothing more than a bunch of egotistical, cheating jerks!
Before another "scholar" is dismissed, Butch and Blake need to go! Institutional control...you gotta be kidding me! If I were a parent of one of the kids that didn't cheat or party from coast to coast....I'd sue the UNC-CH until I owned the Dean Dome.
UNC-CH is a joke! But at least we finally know the truth.
The media is once again missing the real story
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 12:50 — teepackMaybe I've just missed it, but it seems to me like most of the attention on this issue has been directed at the players - for violating the agent rules and then the other group for academic misconduct - and not at Butch Davis (other than the posters on this forum who are calling for his head). This is one of those rare instances where you've got a direct link between the head coach and the misconduct. Usually the head coaches insulate themselves from any misdoing by getting an assistant coach or team manager or other some-such entity to do the dirty work for them. But in thise case, Butch Davis paid the tutor who was doing course work for his players! Now his official story is that he was paying her to tutor his son and I guess we are to believe it is just a coincidence that she was also providing this 'service' to his players. Carolina fans should not be surprised at this. They adopted a win-at-all-costs mentality in football three years ago, and now they are reaping what they sow. You pay a coach $2 million a year, pay his assistants exorbitant salaries, build a Taj Mahal of a training complex for the football program, sink millions into the existing football stadium and hire coaches of questionable integrity, this is what happens. Hope the 8-5 season last year and the impending NCAA penalties was worth the investment!
Good Luck, Tawheel...
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 12:22 — ProwlingWoofieDickie and Butchie haven't even come close to accepting responsibility for this mess yet, much less admitting culpability ! A refund is a nice idea, but won't happen.
However, the tarnishing began in earnest last night, as this train wreck was front and center of every pre-game and halftime show of every college game played, and will be tomorrow, I'm sure.
If Butch skates, then UNC will look even MORE foolish... One or two guys making bad decisions is one (bad) thing; double-digit numbers of kids taking money, trips, and cheating on papers screams BAD PROGRAM.
BUTCH WON'T SKATE
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 12:41 — JPDOhioNow that this is out in the open, there simply is no way it can be swept under the rug. Let's remember that the extent of the infractions isn't known yet. It looks real bad at the moment, but it's not over 'til its over.
Regardless, it is a matter of when, not if, Butch is gone. Even if the violations turn out not to be as bad as they seem right now, there will be a public sacrifice. That would be Butch.
Think so ?
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 13:08 — ProwlingWoofieOne would think that you're right, JPD, but I'd be willing to bet that instead of a public lynching, Butch 'accepts' an assistant coaching job with someone in the NFL (or CFL) at the end of this season (or sooner), and Black Santa just fades away. There won't be any direct assignment - or acceptance - of blame.
It's the 'Carolina Way'...
YES I DO.
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 13:27 — JPDOhioIf Butch had pulled an Eliot Spitzer, he would be better off than he is now. All you have to look at are the comments from public officials that are resulting in a new thread posting every 5 minutes. The tarnishing of UNC's image in this case will require a public display of remorse and resignation.
Again, nothing has been proven yet and the investigation is ongoing. But in today's world of rushing to judgement, that doesn't matter. Swift action will be have to be taken by UNC's administration, perhaps even before the results come out. I admit to not being familiar with the "Carolina Way", but these events are taking on a life and momentum of their own. I will be surprised if Butch makes it to the end of the month.
The fact is that UNC has
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 12:03 — packgrad83The fact is that UNC has been doing these things for a long time...the seniors are in shock that there is an investigation at all. They tweet and post on fb that we don't go to class and that they came back to finalize their BLEEP education. If you think I am off base...read Lawrence Taylor's book.
UNC is still holding out that the NCAA's UNC-led investigation team is going get them off. All the way up to game time......
Don't you realize that the tutor thing is a farce. Wouldn't you send the "clean" tutor to do the new coaches son?.She is probably the least offender!......so they are sealing the crack quickly while an internal investigation team deflects attention......
Where's my refund?
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 11:55 — tawheelwhat about us? Alumni - who were excited about "big-time" football at UNC - making the trip to Atlanta to see the "big" UNC-LSU game. How about reimbursing us for the costs of the tickets and trip? We were planning on supporting a Team, who is full of disciplined and dedicated "student athletes" (and I stress the word "student" here), from one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Now we are left to witness a "massacre" to be viewed and plastered all over national TV; an experience which will tarnish the image and reputation of the entire college for years to come. I suppose - Dickie or Butch - could spare some change to reimburse us, given the salaries these folks get. Just like in the business world or in the military, it all comes down from the top and leadership...
wheres my response at?

It will get worse
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 11:40 — ncdawg09Once the NCAA is in the house and it's a national story, there are no more $500 handshakes. They'll have to look around at the hoops program too.
To all the head in the sand UNC fans
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 11:01 — jmgarisonYou may want to read the book by your beloved LT before you sit there and preach that UNC has always done it right until now.
Quote from LT in his book ''If you can't change the system,'' he says of having to stay academically eligible, ''you better learn how to beat it. I did. There were a number of courses that were ready-made for football players. You know, large lecture classes, 1,200 people or more, with two tests, a midterm and a final, both multiple-choice. In those courses, you're gonna get what the guy sitting next to you gets. The only thing you have to do is remember not to copy the same name on your paper.''
That's just the tip of the iceberg. Wake up, your program has cheaters and has for a long time like many other places.

Fri, 09/03/2010 - 10:49 — BigMonsterUNC would not beat LSU even with these players. So their suspension for this game is a joke.
The NCAA will not let UNC go to any bowl games by the time their investigation is done. So set an example for the school and the nation. Cheating is not allowed.
Disappointment
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 10:17 — tucdm01lContrary to what many (not all) Pack fans have posted, most UNC alumni are deeply chagrined by what has taken place with the football team over the course of this summer. As an alumnus and a faculty member at another FBS school (in Colorado), I wholeheartedly agree with the decision not to play these players, in spite of what it may mean for this game and this season. The integrity of the academic program at UNC is far more important than seeing Marvin Austin et al. on the field. Frankly, if these player did cheat, I trust that the honor court at UNC will ensure that an appropriate punishment is imposed. In my opinion, "appropriate" would mean expulsion if they cheated, simply because of the position they have left their teammates in, and because of the damage they have done to UNC's national reputation.
As far as Coach Davis is concerned, I'm not sure what should be done. Most of these actions are the result of the individual players making bad decisions. If Coach Davis and the Athletic Department tried to educate them on the rules, and reiterated those rules time and again (which I think is likely), I find it hard to blame Davis for their actions. What is he supposed to do? Lock them in their dorm rooms, hold their hands as they cross the street, and spend every waking moment following them around? That's too much to expect, even with all the assistants involved. On the other hand, I think Davis would be wise to show Coach Blake, who seems to be the conduit through which much of this trouble sprouted, the door. He IS responsible for choosing Blake, and Blake's track record, which apparently was well known before he was tapped to coach the D-line, causes me to question Coach Davis's judgment. A head coach's judgment on those kinds of things should never have to be questioned.
Butch Davis is the positive note about the whole situation...
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 17:19 — c1rhinoHow can you say Butch is to blame when the University referred the tutor to his family and, with any college, you are dealing with 18-21 year old people that are just now living life on their own away from their parents. Bad decisions will be made at some point by all of them. I guarantee you none of you can say you didn't make any bad decisions in college.(if any of you even went to college) Exactly, now shut your mouth. As posted earlier Butch can't walk around and hold each of their hands. He can preach to them the right things to do, but he cannot make their decisions for them once they are out of his sight.
Take a look at his work in Miami. The program was in shambles and Butch came in to clean it up, which he did, and went on to form them into a national contender every year. The fault lies with each individual who made their own decision to "cheat " or whatever they did. Look at all the high-profile recruits we are getting now. It is because they know the coach is one of the best and the univesity has high academic standards. This will be sorted out and the blame should fall on all the students that made a wrong decision.
This type of conduct goes on at every university. UNC's just came out because of the NCAA probe. If you did an investigation at all the other schools, they would have the same problems right now. Don't think they wouldn't. Butch and staff will right the ship.
You can add this bit to the scrutiny factor also. The head of NCAA investigations Paul Dee hates Butch because BD left Miami when he was the AD there. Think their is a little bit of vengeance factored in there to bring down UNC football. Damn right there is.
Moving along, let's play football and may there be some really good games this year between all the teams.
Go Heels!!!

However, I don't think it matters. Butch is the likely sacrificial lamb in this fiasco, whether he deserves it or not. I have felt that from the beginning. In his defense, if he did know, at least he didn't pull a John Calipari and bail before the fall out.

The Blame Dickie Theory ....
Fri, 09/03/2010 - 14:16 — AgentPierceI understand the Blame Dickie Theory. It has been our official fallback excuse since the day Mack left. I think I know most of the "_____ was Baddour's fault." issues.
However in this one ..... Dickie has been given ZERO credit for hiring Butch Davis. When all the Dickie-haters were turning backflips over getting Butch they were saying "the fat cats did it, not Baddour". Now that Butch turns sour ..... it's Dickie's fault. ????
There are no rules in the Blame Dickie Game but IMO he gets a pass on "hiring Butch" but is in the crosshairs on how this is resolved.
